A Polynomial Bound on the Pathwidth of Graphs Edge-Coverable by k Shortest Paths

Abstract
Dumas, Foucaud, Perez and Todinca [SIAM J. Disc. Math., 2024] recently proved that every graph whose edge set can be covered by k shortest paths has pathwidth at most 3^k. In this paper, we improve this upper bound on the pathwidth to a polynomial bound; namely, we show that every graph whose edge set can be covered by k shortest paths has pathwidth O(k⁴), answering a question from the same paper. Moreover, we also prove that when k ≤ 3, every such graph has pathwidth at most k (and this bound is tight). Eventually, we show that even though there exist graphs with arbitrary large treewidth whose vertex set can be covered by 2 isometric trees, every graph whose set of edges can be covered by 2 isometric trees has treewidth at most 2.

Simplicial Covering Dimension of Extremal Concept Classes

Abstract
Dimension theory is a branch of topology concerned with defining and analyzing dimensions of geometric and topological spaces in purely topological terms. In this work, we adapt the classical notion of topological dimension (Lebesgue covering) to binary concept classes. The topological space naturally associated with a concept class is its space of realizable distributions. The loss function and the class itself induce a simplicial structure on this space, with respect to which we define a simplicial covering dimension. We prove that for finite concept classes, this simplicial covering dimension exactly characterizes the list replicability number (equivalently, global stability) in PAC learning. This connection allows us to apply tools from classical dimension theory to compute the exact list replicability number of the broad family of extremal concept classes.

Beyond 2-Edge-Connectivity: Algorithms and Impossibility for Content-Oblivious Leader Election

Abstract
The content-oblivious model, introduced by Censor-Hillel, Cohen, Gelles, and Sela (PODC 2022; Distributed Computing 2023), captures an extremely weak form of communication where nodes can only send asynchronous, content-less pulses. They showed that in 2-edge-connected networks, any distributed algorithm can be simulated in the content-oblivious model, provided that a unique leader is designated a priori. Subsequent works of Frei, Gelles, Ghazy, and Nolin (DISC 2024) and Chalopin et al. (DISC 2025) developed content-oblivious leader election algorithms, first for unoriented rings and then for general 2-edge-connected graphs. These results establish that all graph problems are solvable in content-oblivious, 2-edge-connected networks. Much less is known about networks that are not 2-edge-connected. Censor-Hillel, Cohen, Gelles, and Sela showed that no non-constant function f(x,y) can be computed correctly by two parties using content-oblivious communication over a single edge, where one party holds x and the other holds y. This seemingly ruled out many natural graph problems on non-2-edge-connected graphs. In this work, we show that, with the knowledge of network topology G, leader election is possible in a wide range of graphs. Our main contributions are as follows: Impossibility: Graphs symmetric about an edge admit no randomized terminating leader election algorithm, even when nodes have unique identifiers and full knowledge of G. Leader election algorithms: Trees that are not symmetric about any edge admit a quiescently terminating leader election algorithm with topology knowledge, even in anonymous networks, using O(n²) messages, where n is the number of nodes. Moreover, even-diameter trees admit a terminating leader election given only the knowledge of the network diameter D = 2r, with message complexity O(nr). Necessity of topology knowledge: In the family of graphs 𝒢 = {P₃, P₅}, both the 3-path P₃ and the 5-path P₅ admit a quiescently terminating leader election if nodes know the topology exactly. However, if nodes only know that the underlying topology belongs to 𝒢, then terminating leader election is impossible.

Planar Stories of Graph Drawings: Algorithms and Experiments

Abstract
We address the problem of computing a dynamic visualization of a geometric graph G as a sequence of frames. Each frame shows only a portion of the graph but their union covers G entirely. The two main requirements of our dynamic visualization are: (i) guaranteeing drawing stability, so to preserve the user’s mental map; (ii) keeping the visual complexity of each frame low. To satisfy the first requirement, we never change the position of the vertices. Regarding the second requirement, we avoid edge crossings in each frame. More precisely, in the first frame we visualize a suitable subset of non-crossing edges; in each subsequent frame, exactly one new edge enters the visualization and all the edges that cross with it are deleted. We call such a sequence of frames a planar story of G. Our goal is to find a planar story whose minimum number of edges contemporarily displayed is maximized (i.e., a planar story that maximizes the minimum frame size). Besides studying our model from a theoretical point of view, we also design and experimentally compare different algorithms, both exact techniques and heuristics. These algorithms provide an array of alternative trade-offs between efficiency and effectiveness, also depending on the structure of the input graph.

Content-Oblivious Leader Election in 2-Edge-Connected Networks

Abstract
Censor-Hillel, Cohen, Gelles, and Sela (PODC 2022 & Distributed Computing 2023) studied fully-defective asynchronous networks, where communication channels may arbitrarily corrupt messages. The model is equivalent to content-oblivious computation, where nodes communicate solely via pulses. They showed that if the network is 2-edge-connected, then any algorithm for a noiseless setting can be simulated in the fully-defective setting; otherwise, no non-trivial computation is possible in the fully-defective setting. However, their simulation requires a predesignated leader, which they conjectured to be necessary for any non-trivial content-oblivious task. Recently, Frei, Gelles, Ghazy, and Nolin (DISC 2024) refuted this conjecture for the special case of oriented ring topology. They designed two asynchronous content-oblivious leader election algorithms with message complexity O(n ⋅ ID_{max}), where n is the number of nodes and ID_{max} is the maximum ID. The first algorithm stabilizes in unoriented rings without termination detection. The second algorithm quiescently terminates in oriented rings, thus enabling the execution of the simulation algorithm after leader election. In this work, we present two results: General 2-edge-connected topologies: First, we show an asynchronous content-oblivious leader election algorithm that quiescently terminates in any 2-edge-connected network with message complexity O(m ⋅ N ⋅ ID_{min}), where m is the number of edges, N is a known upper bound on the number of nodes, and ID_{min} is the smallest ID. Combined with the above simulation, this result shows that whenever a size bound N is known, any noiseless algorithm can be simulated in the fully-defective model without a preselected leader, fully refuting the conjecture. Unoriented rings: We then show that the knowledge of N can be dropped in unoriented ring topologies by presenting a quiescently terminating election algorithm with message complexity O(n ⋅ ID_{max}) that matches the previous bound. Consequently, this result constitutes a strict improvement over the previous state of the art and shows that, on rings, fully-defective and noiseless communication are computationally equivalent, with no additional assumptions.

Perpetual Exploration in Anonymous Synchronous Networks with a Byzantine Black Hole

Abstract
In this paper, we investigate the following question: "How can a group of initially co-located mobile agents perpetually explore an unknown graph, when one stationary node occasionally behaves maliciously, under the control of an adversary?" This malicious node is termed as "Byzantine black hole (BBH)" and at any given round it may choose to destroy all visiting agents, or none of them. While investigating this question, we found out that this subtle power turns out to drastically undermine even basic exploration strategies which have been proposed in the context of a classical, always active, black hole. We study this perpetual exploration problem in the presence of at most one BBH, without initial knowledge of the network size. Since the underlying graph may be 1-connected, perpetual exploration of the entire graph may be infeasible. Accordingly, we define two variants of the problem, termed as PerpExploration-BBH and PerpExploration-BBH-Home. In the former, the agents are tasked to perform perpetual exploration of at least one component, obtained after the exclusion of the BBH. In the latter, the agents are tasked to perform perpetual exploration of the component which contains the home node, where agents are initially co-located. Naturally, PerpExploration-BBH-Home is a special case of PerpExploration-BBH. The mobile agents are controlled by a synchronous scheduler, and they communicate via face-to-face model of communication. The main objective in this paper is to determine the minimum number of agents necessary and sufficient to solve these problems. We first consider the problems in acyclic networks, and we obtain optimal algorithms that solve PerpExploration-BBH with 4 agents, and PerpExploration-BBH-Home with 6 agents in trees. The lower bounds hold even in path graphs. In general graphs, we give a non-trivial lower bound of 2Δ-1 agents for PerpExploration-BBH, and an upper bound of 3Δ+3 agents for PerpExploration-BBH-Home. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper that studies a variant of a black hole in arbitrary networks, without initial topological knowledge about the network.

Brief Announcement: Non-Uniform Content-Oblivious Leader Election on Oriented Asynchronous Rings

Abstract
In this paper, we study the leader election problem in oriented ring networks under content-oblivious asynchronous message-passing systems, where an adversary may arbitrarily corrupt message contents. Frei et al. (DISC 2024) recently presented a uniform terminating leader election algorithm for oriented rings in this setting, with message complexity O(n ID_{max}) on a ring of size n, where ID_{max} is the largest identifier in the system. In this paper, we investigate the message complexity of leader election in this model, showing that no uniform algorithm can solve the problem if each process is limited to sending a constant number of messages in one direction. Interestingly, this limitation hinges on the uniformity assumption. In the non-uniform setting - where processes know an upper bound U ≥ n on the ring size - we present an algorithm with message complexity O(n U ID_{min}), in which each process sends O(U ID_{min}) messages clockwise and only three messages counter-clockwise. Here, ID_{min} is the smallest identifier in the system. This dependence on the identifiers compares favorably with the dependence on ID_{max} of Frei et al. (DISC 2024). We also show a non-uniform algorithm where each process sends O(U logID_{min}) messages in one direction and O(logID_{min}) in the other. The factor log ID_{min} is optimal, matching the lower bound of Frei et al. (DISC 2024). Finally, in the anonymous setting, we propose a randomized algorithm where each process sends only O(log² U) messages, with a success probability of 1 - U^{-c}.

Testing Whether a Subgraph Is Convex or Isometric

Abstract
We consider the following two algorithmic problems: given a graph G and a subgraph H ⊆ G, decide whether H is an isometric or a geodesically convex subgraph of G. It is relatively easy to see that the problems can be solved by computing the distances between all pairs of vertices. We provide a conditional lower bound showing that, for sparse graphs with n vertices and Θ(n) edges, we cannot expect to solve the problem in O(n^{2-ε}) time for any constant ε > 0. We also show that the problem can be solved in subquadratic time for planar graphs and in near-linear time for graphs of bounded treewidth. Finally, we provide a near-linear time algorithm for the setting where G is a plane graph and H is defined by a few cycles in G.

Computational Complexity of Covering Regular Trees

Abstract
A graph covering projection, also referred to as a locally bijective homomorphism, is a mapping between the vertices and edges of two graphs that preserves incidences and is a local bijection. This concept originates in topological graph theory but has also found applications in combinatorics and theoretical computer science. In this paper we consider undirected graphs in the most general setting - graphs may contain multiple edges, loops, and semi-edges. This is in line with recent trends in topological graph theory and mathematical physics. We advance the study of the computational complexity of the H-Cover problem, which asks whether an input graph allows a covering projection onto a parameter graph H. The quest for a complete characterization started in 1990’s. Several results for simple graphs or graphs without semi-edges have been known, the role of semi-edges in the complexity setting has started to be investigated only recently. One of the most general known NP-hardness results states that H-Cover is NP-complete for every simple connected regular graph of valency greater than two. We complement this result by considering regular graphs H arising from connected acyclic graphs by adding semi-edges. Namely, we prove that any graph obtained by adding semi-edges to the vertices of a tree making it a d-regular graph with d ≥ 3, defines an NP-complete graph covering problem. In line with the so called Strong Dichotomy Conjecture, we prove that the NP-hardness holds even for simple graphs on input.

Graph Exploration: The Impact of a Distance Constraint

Abstract
A mobile agent, starting from a node s of a simple undirected connected graph G = (V,E), has to explore all nodes and edges of G using the minimum number of edge traversals. To do so, the agent uses a deterministic algorithm that allows it to gain information on G as it traverses its edges. During its exploration, the agent must always respect the constraint of knowing a path of length at most D to go back to node s. The upper bound D is fixed as being equal to (1+α)r, where r is the eccentricity of node s (i.e., the maximum distance from s to any other node) and α is any positive real constant. This task has been introduced by Duncan et al. [Christian A. Duncan et al., 2006] and is known as distance-constrained exploration. The penalty of an exploration algorithm running in G is the number of edge traversals made by the agent in excess of |E|. In [Petrisor Panaite and Andrzej Pelc, 1999], Panaite and Pelc gave an algorithm for solving exploration without any constraint on the moves that is guaranteed to work in every graph G with a (small) penalty in 𝒪(|V|). Hence, a natural question is whether we can obtain a distance-constrained exploration algorithm with the same guarantee as well. In this paper, we provide a negative answer to this question. We also observe that an algorithm working in every graph G with a linear penalty in |V| cannot be obtained for the task of fuel-constrained exploration, another variant studied in the literature. This solves an open problem posed by Duncan et al. in [Christian A. Duncan et al., 2006] and shows a fundamental separation with the task of exploration without constraint on the moves.

Self-Stabilizing Weakly Byzantine Perpetual Gathering of Mobile Agents

Abstract
We study the Byzantine gathering problem involving k mobile agents with unique identifiers (IDs), f of which are Byzantine. These agents start the execution of a common algorithm from (possibly different) nodes in an n-node network, potentially starting at different times. Once started, the agents operate in synchronous rounds. We focus on weakly Byzantine environments, where Byzantine agents can behave arbitrarily but cannot falsify their IDs. The goal is for all non-Byzantine agents to eventually terminate at a single node simultaneously. In this paper, we first prove two impossibility results: (1) for any number of non-Byzantine agents, no algorithm can solve this problem without global knowledge of the network size or the number of agents, and (2) no self-stabilizing algorithm exists if k ≤ 2f even with n, k, f, and the length Λ_g of the largest ID among IDs of non-Byzantine agents, where the self-stabilizing algorithm enables agents to gather starting from arbitrary (inconsistent) initial states. Next, based on these results, we introduce a perpetual gathering problem and propose a self-stabilizing algorithm for this problem. This problem requires that all non-Byzantine agents always be co-located from a certain time onwards. If the agents know Λ_g and upper bounds N, K, F on n, k, f, the proposed algorithm works in O(K⋅ F⋅ Λ_g⋅ X(N)) rounds, where X(n) is the time required to visit all nodes in a n-nodes network. Our results indicate that while no algorithm can solve the original self-stabilizing gathering problem for any k and f even with exact global knowledge of the network size and the number of agents, the self-stabilizing perpetual gathering problem can always be solved with just upper bounds on this knowledge.

Perpetual Exploration of a Ring in Presence of Byzantine Black Hole

Abstract
Perpetual exploration stands as a fundamental problem in the domain of distributed mobile agent algorithms, where the objective is to ensure that each node within a graph is visited by at least one agent infinitely often. While this issue has received significant attention, particularly concerning ring topologies, the presence of malicious nodes, referred to as black holes, adds more complexity. A black hole can destroy any incoming agent without leaving any trace of its existence. In [Bampas et al., 2015; Královič and Miklík, 2010], the authors have considered this problem in the context of periodic data retrieval. They introduced a variant of a black hole called gray hole (where the adversary chooses whether to destroy an agent or let it pass) among other variants, and showed that 4 asynchronous and co-located agents are necessary and sufficient to solve the periodic data retrieval problem (hence perpetual exploration) in the presence of such a gray hole if each of the nodes of the ring has a whiteboard. This paper investigates the exploration of a ring by introducing a realistic variant of a gray hole, called a "Byzantine black hole". In addition to the usual capabilities of a gray hole, the adversary can also choose whether to erase any previously stored information on that node. Note that in [Bampas et al., 2015; Královič and Miklík, 2010], this problem was considered with only one particular initial scenario (i.e., agents are initially co-located) and one specific communication model (i.e., whiteboard). Now, there can be many other initial scenarios where all agents might not be co-located (i.e., they may be scattered). Also, there are many weaker communications models such as Face-to-Face and Pebble, where this perpetual exploration problem is yet to be investigated in the presence of a Byzantine black hole. The main results of our paper focus on minimizing the number of agents while guaranteeing that they perform the perpetual exploration on a ring even in the presence of a Byzantine black hole under different communication models and for different starting scenarios. On the positive side, as a byproduct of our work, we achieved a better upper and lower bound result (i.e., 3 agents) for perpetual exploration in the presence of a Byzantine black hole (which is a more generalized version of a gray hole), by trading-off the scheduler capability, when the agents are initially co-located, and each node contains a whiteboard.

Crash-Tolerant Exploration of Trees by Energy-Sharing Mobile Agents

Abstract
We consider the problem of graph exploration by energy sharing mobile agents that are subject to crash faults. More precisely, we consider a team of two agents where at most one of them may fail unpredictably, and the considered topology is that of connected acyclic graphs (i.e. trees). We consider both the asynchronous and the synchronous settings, and we provide necessary and sufficient conditions about the energy.

Deterministic Self-Stabilising Leader Election for Programmable Matter with Constant Memory

Abstract
The problem of electing a unique leader is central to all distributed systems, including programmable matter systems where particles have constant size memory. In this paper, we present a silent self-stabilising, deterministic, stationary, election algorithm for particles having constant memory, assuming that the system is simply connected. Our algorithm is elegant and simple, and requires constant memory per particle. We prove that our algorithm always stabilises to a configuration with a unique leader, under a daemon satisfying some fairness guarantees (Gouda fairness [Mohamed G. Gouda, 2001]). We use the special geometric properties of programmable matter in 2D triangular grids to obtain the first self-stabilising algorithm for such systems. This result is surprising since it is known that silent self-stabilising algorithms for election in general distributed networks require Ω(log n) bits of memory per node, even for ring topologies [Shlomi Dolev et al., 1999].

Isometric Path Complexity of Graphs

Abstract
A set S of isometric paths of a graph G is "v-rooted", where v is a vertex of G, if v is one of the end-vertices of all the isometric paths in S. The isometric path complexity of a graph G, denoted by ipco (G), is the minimum integer k such that there exists a vertex v ∈ V(G) satisfying the following property: the vertices of any isometric path P of G can be covered by k many v-rooted isometric paths. First, we provide an O(n² m)-time algorithm to compute the isometric path complexity of a graph with n vertices and m edges. Then we show that the isometric path complexity remains bounded for graphs in three seemingly unrelated graph classes, namely, hyperbolic graphs, (theta, prism, pyramid)-free graphs, and outerstring graphs. Hyperbolic graphs are extensively studied in Metric Graph Theory. The class of (theta, prism, pyramid)-free graphs are extensively studied in Structural Graph Theory, e.g. in the context of the Strong Perfect Graph Theorem. The class of outerstring graphs is studied in Geometric Graph Theory and Computational Geometry. Our results also show that the distance functions of these (structurally) different graph classes are more similar than previously thought. There is a direct algorithmic consequence of having small isometric path complexity. Specifically, using a result of Chakraborty et al. [ISAAC 2022], we show that if the isometric path complexity of a graph G is bounded by a constant k, then there exists a k-factor approximation algorithm for Isometric Path Cover, whose objective is to cover all vertices of a graph with a minimum number of isometric paths.
