A Survey of Real-Time Support, Analysis, and Advancements in ROS 2

Abstract
The Robot Operating System 2 (ROS 2) has emerged as a relevant middleware framework for robotic applications, offering modularity, distributed execution, and communication. In the last six years, ROS 2 has drawn increasing attention from the real-time systems community and industry. This survey presents a comprehensive overview of research efforts that analyze, enhance, and extend ROS 2 to support real-time execution. We first provide a detailed description of the internal scheduling mechanisms of ROS 2 and its layered architecture, including the interaction with DDS-based communication and other communication middleware. We then review key contributions from the literature, covering timing analysis for both single- and multi-threaded executors, metrics such as response time, reaction time, and data age, and different communication modes. The survey also discusses community-driven enhancements to the ROS 2 runtime, including new executor algorithm designs, real-time GPU management, and microcontroller support via micro-ROS. Furthermore, we summarize techniques for bounding DDS communication delays, message filters, and profiling tools that have been developed to support analysis and experimentation. To help systematize this growing body of work, we introduce taxonomies that classify the surveyed contributions based on different criteria. This survey aims to guide both researchers and practitioners in understanding and improving the real-time capabilities of ROS 2.

On the Computational Cost of Knowledge Graph Embeddings

Abstract
Over a decade, numerous Knowledge Graph Embedding (KGE) models have been designed and evaluated on reference datasets, always with increasing performance. In this paper, we re-evaluate these models with respect to their computational efficiency during training, by estimating the computational cost of the procedure expressed in floating-point operations. We design a cost model based on analytical expressions and apply it on a collection of 20 KGE models, representative of the state-of-the-art. We show that dimensionality or parameter efficiency, used in the literature to compare models with each other, are not suitable to evaluate the true cost of models. Through fixed-budget experiments, a novel approach to evaluate KGE models based on cost estimates, we re-assess the relative performance of model families compared to the state-of-the-art. Bilinear models such as ComplEx underperform with a low computational budget while hyperbolic linear models appear to offer no particular benefit compared to simpler Euclidian models, especially the MuRE model. Neural models, such as ConvE or CompGCN, achieve reasonable performance in the literature but their high computational cost appears unnecessary when compared with other models. The trade-off between efficiency and expressivity of both linear and neural models is to be further explored.

Quantum Advantage from Sampling Shallow Circuits: Beyond Hardness of Marginals

Abstract
We construct a family of distributions {𝒟_n}_n with 𝒟_n over {0, 1}ⁿ and a family of depth-7 quantum circuits {C_n}_n such that 𝒟_n is produced exactly by C_n with the all zeros state as input, yet any constant-depth classical circuit with bounded fan-in gates evaluated on any binary product distribution has total variation distance 1 - e^{-Ω(n)} from 𝒟_n. Moreover, the quantum circuits we construct are geometrically local and use a relatively standard gate set: Hadamard, controlled-phase, CNOT, and Toffoli gates. All previous separations of this type suffer from some undesirable constraint on the classical circuit model or the quantum circuits witnessing the separation. Our family of distributions is inspired by the Parity Halving Problem of Watts, Kothari, Schaeffer, and Tal (STOC, 2019), which built on the work of Bravyi, Gosset, and König (Science, 2018) to separate shallow quantum and classical circuits for relational problems.

Random Unitaries in Constant (Quantum) Time

Abstract
Random unitaries are a central object of study in quantum information, with applications to quantum computation, quantum many-body physics, and quantum cryptography. Recent work has constructed unitary designs and pseudorandom unitaries (PRUs) using Θ(log log n)-depth unitary circuits with two-qubit gates. In this work, we show that unitary designs and PRUs can be efficiently constructed in several well-studied models of constant-time quantum computation (i.e., the time complexity on the quantum computer is independent of the system size). These models are constant-depth circuits augmented with certain nonlocal operations, such as (a) many-qubit TOFFOLI gates, (b) many-qubit FANOUT gates, or (c) mid-circuit measurements with classical feedforward control. Recent advances in quantum computing hardware suggest experimental feasibility of these models in the near future. Our results demonstrate that unitary designs and PRUs can be constructed in much weaker circuit models than previously thought. Furthermore, our construction of PRUs in constant-depth with many-qubit TOFFOLI gates shows that, under cryptographic assumptions, there is no polynomial-time learning algorithm for the circuit class QAC⁰. Finally, our results suggest a new approach towards proving that PARITY is not computable in QAC⁰, a long-standing question in quantum complexity theory.

Query Lower Bounds for Correlation Clustering Under Memory Constraints

Abstract
This work initiates the study of memory–query tradeoffs for graph problems, with a focus on correlation clustering. Correlation clustering asks for a partition of the vertices that minimizes disagreements: non‑edges inside clusters plus edges across clusters. Our first result is a tight query lower bound: to output a partition whose cost approximates the optimum up to an additive error of ε n², any algorithm requires Ω(n/ε²) adjacency-matrix queries. Under memory constraints, we show that even for the seemingly easier task of approximating the optimal clustering cost (without producing a partition), any algorithm in the random query model must make ≫ n/ε² adjacency-matrix queries. Finally, we prove the first general graph model query lower bound for correlation clustering, where algorithms are allowed adjacency-matrix, neighbor, and degree queries. The latter two bounds are not yet tight, leaving room for sharper results.

On Solving Asymmetric Diagonally Dominant Linear Systems in Sublinear Time

Abstract
We initiate a study of solving a row/column diagonally dominant (RDD/CDD) linear system 𝐌x = b in sublinear time, with the goal of estimating t^{⊤}x^{∗} for a given vector t ∈ ℝⁿ and a specific solution x^{∗}. This setting naturally generalizes the study of sublinear-time solvers for symmetric diagonally dominant (SDD) systems [Andoni-Krauthgamer-Pogrow, ITCS 2019] to the asymmetric case, which has remained underexplored despite extensive work on nearly-linear-time solvers for RDD/CDD systems. Our first contributions are characterizations of the problem’s mathematical structure. We express a solution x^{∗} via a Neumann series, prove its convergence, and upper bound the truncation error on this series through a novel quantity of 𝐌, termed the maximum p-norm gap. This quantity generalizes the spectral gap of symmetric matrices and captures how the structure of 𝐌 governs the problem’s computational difficulty. For systems with bounded maximum p-norm gap, we develop a collection of algorithmic results for locally approximating t^{⊤}x^{∗} under various scenarios and error measures. We derive these results by adapting the techniques of random-walk sampling, local push, and their bidirectional combination, which have proved powerful for special cases of solving RDD/CDD systems, particularly estimating PageRank and effective resistance on graphs. Our general framework yields deeper insights, extended results, and improved complexity bounds for these problems. Notably, our perspective provides a unified understanding of Forward Push and Backward Push, two fundamental approaches for estimating random-walk probabilities on graphs. Our framework also inherits the hardness results for sublinear-time SDD solvers and local PageRank computation, establishing lower bounds on the maximum p-norm gap or the accuracy parameter. We hope that our work opens the door for further study into sublinear solvers, local graph algorithms, and directed spectral graph theory.

Abstract
During the workshop, we deeply discussed what CONversational Information ACcess (CONIAC) is and its unique features, proposing a world model abstracting it, and defined the Conversational Agents Framework for Evaluation (CAFE) for the evaluation of CONIAC systems, consisting of six major components: 1) goals of the system’s stakeholders, 2) user tasks to be studied in the evaluation, 3) aspects of the users carrying out the tasks, 4) evaluation criteria to be considered, 5) evaluation methodology to be applied, and 6) measures for the quantitative criteria chosen.

The PACE 2025 Parameterized Algorithms and Computational Experiments Challenge: Dominating Set and Hitting Set

Abstract
The 10th iteration of the of the Parameterized Algorithms and Computational Experiments challenge (PACE) 2025 was devoted to engineer algorithms solving the Dominating Set problem as well as the Hitting Set problem. In contrast to the last iterations, these problems are (under standard assumptions) not fixed-parameter tractable (fpt) in general. However, restricting the structure of the input (e.g. to planar graphs or degenerate graphs for Dominating Set, or to set systems with sets of bounded size for Hitting Set) renders these problems fpt. Following the spirit of the last iterations of the PACE challenge, there is an exact track and a heuristic track for each problem; each track coming with a benchmark set of 100 public instances and 100 private instances. Overall, the PACE 2025 had 71 participants from 25 teams, 13 countries, and 3 continents. In this report, we briefly describe the setup of the challenge, the selection of benchmark instances, as well as the ranking of the participating teams. We also briefly outline the approaches used in the submitted solvers.

Abstract
In Argument Mining, predicting argumentative relations between texts (or spans) remains one of the most challenging aspects, even more so in the cross-document setting. This paper makes three key contributions to advance research in this domain. We first extend an existing dataset, the Sci-Arg corpus, by annotating it with explicit inter-document argumentative relations, thereby allowing arguments to be distributed over several documents forming an Argument Web; these new annotations are published using Semantic Web technologies (RDF, OWL). Second, we explore and evaluate three automated approaches for predicting these inter-document argumentative relations, establishing critical baselines on the new dataset. We find that a simple classifier based on discourse indicators with access to context outperforms neural methods. Third, we conduct a comparative analysis of these approaches for both intra- and inter-document settings, identifying statistically significant differences in results that indicate the necessity of distinguishing between these two scenarios. Our findings highlight significant challenges in this complex domain and open crucial avenues for future research on the Argument Web of Science, particularly for those interested in leveraging Semantic Web technologies and knowledge graphs to understand scholarly discourse. With this, we provide the first stepping stones in the form of a benchmark dataset, three baseline methods, and an initial analysis for a systematic exploration of this field relevant to the Web of Data and Science.

Circle-Segment Intersection Queries in Connected Geometric Graphs

Abstract
In this paper, we study the problem of efficiently reporting all intersections between a given set of line segments in the plane and a query circle, focusing on the case where the segments form the edges of a connected geometric graph. While previous data structures for circle-segment intersection queries on general segment sets incur high space or query time costs, we exploit the connectivity of the input to obtain significantly improved performance. In fact, we propose a new circle-segment intersection data structure that can be constructed in 𝒪((n + C) log³ n) time and space on connected graphs with n edges and C edge crossings. It answers intersection queries in 𝒪(k log³ n) time, where k denotes the output size. Our method relies on the construction of efficient circle-graph intersection oracles as well as a novel linear-time algorithm to partition the edges of the graph into balanced, connected components, which might be of independent interest. In a proof-of-concept experimental study on real-world road networks, we show that our novel data structure also performs well in practice. Even on networks with millions of edges, the construction time is within minutes and queries are answered in a few milliseconds.

Using Reinforcement Learning to Optimize the Global and Local Crossing Number (Poster Abstract)

Abstract
We present a novel approach to graph drawing based on reinforcement learning for minimizing the global and the local crossing number, that is, the total number of edge crossings and the maximum number of crossings on any edge, respectively. An agent learns how to move a vertex based on a given observation vector. The agent receives feedback in the form of local reward signals tied to crossing reduction. To generate an initial layout, we use a stress-based graph-drawing algorithm. We compare our method against force- and stress-based baseline algorithms as well as three established algorithms for global crossing minimization on a suite of benchmark graphs. The experiments show mixed results: our current algorithm is mainly competitive for the local crossing number.

Show Me Your Best Side: Characteristics of User-Preferred Perspectives for 3D Graph Drawings

Abstract
The visual analysis of graphs in 3D has become increasingly popular, accelerated by the rise of immersive technology, such as augmented and virtual reality. Unlike 2D drawings, 3D graph layouts are highly viewpoint-dependent, making perspective selection critical for revealing structural and relational patterns. Despite its importance, there is limited empirical evidence guiding what constitutes an effective or preferred viewpoint from the user’s perspective. In this paper, we present a systematic investigation into user-preferred viewpoints in 3D graph visualisations. We conducted a controlled study with 23 participants in a virtual reality environment, where users selected their most and least preferred viewpoints for 36 different graphs varying in size and layout. From this data, enriched by qualitative feedback, we distil common strategies underlying viewpoint choice. We further analyse the alignment of user preferences with classical 2D aesthetic criteria (e.g., Crossings), 3D-specific measures (e.g., Node-Node Occlusion), and introduce a novel measure capturing the perceivability of a graph’s principal axes (Isometric Viewpoint Deviation). Our data-driven analysis indicates that Stress, Crossings, Gabriel Ratio, Edge-Node Overlap, and Isometric Viewpoint Deviation are key indicators of viewpoint preference. Beyond our findings, we contribute a publicly available dataset consisting of the graphs and computed aesthetic measures, supporting further research and the development of viewpoint evaluation measures for 3D graph drawing.

Safe to Fly? Real-Time Flight Mission Feasibility Assessment for Drone Package Delivery Operations

Abstract
Ensuring flight safety for small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) requires continuous in-flight monitoring and decision-making, as unexpected events can alter power consumption and deplete battery energy faster than anticipated. Such events may result in insufficient battery capacity to complete a mission, thereby compromising flight safety. In this paper, we present an online feasibility assessment and contingency management framework that continuously monitors the aircraft’s battery state and the energy required to complete the flight in real-time, which enables informed decision-making to enhance flight safety. The framework consists of two main components: power consumption prediction and battery voltage trajectory prediction. The power consumption prediction is conducted using a model that is based on momentum theory, while the voltage trajectory prediction is performed using a Neural Ordinary Differential Equation (Neural ODE)-based data-driven model. By integrating these two components, the framework evaluates the feasibility of a flight mission in real time and determines whether to proceed with the mission or initiate rerouting. We evaluate the framework’s performance in a drone delivery scenario in the Dallas–Fort Worth (DFW) area, where the aircraft encounters an unexpected energy depletion event mid-flight. The proposed framework is tasked with assessing the feasibility of completing the mission and, if necessary, rerouting the aircraft for an emergency landing. The results demonstrate that the framework accurately and efficiently detects energy insufficiencies in real-time and re-routes the aircraft to a [3] predefined emergency landing site.

Unsupervised Multimodal Learning for Fault Diagnosis and Prognosis - Application to Radiotherapy Systems (PhD Panel)

Abstract
Modern complex systems, such as radiotherapy machines, require robust strategies for fault detection, diagnosis, and prognosis to ensure operational continuity and patient safety. While data-driven methods have gained traction, few studies address diagnostic and prognostic tasks using multimodal operational data under unsupervised or semi-supervised learning settings. This gap is particularly critical given the scarcity of labeled failure data in real-world environments. This work aims to design a unified approach for fault detection, diagnosis, and prognosis using multimodal data in the absence of complete labeling. To this end, autoencoders (AEs) are employed due to their suitability for unsupervised and self-supervised learning, flexibility in handling heterogeneous data, and ability to construct latent representations optimized for various downstream tasks. A specific implementation based on a Long Short-Term Memory β-Variational Autoencoder (LSTM-β-VAE) was developed to detect anomalies in machine logs. This framework is applied to TomoTherapy® systems - a highly complex and under-explored use case within the radiotherapy domain. Initial results demonstrate strong anomaly detection performance on both a public benchmark dataset (HDFS) and a proprietary dataset derived from real-world TomoTherapy® machine faults. Beyond methodology, the paper includes a concise literature review of multimodal learning and data-driven diagnosis and prognosis with a focus on AEs. Based on this review, key research directions are identified for the continuation of the thesis, especially the integration of explainable AI as a means to enhance diagnosis capabilities in the absence of labeled faults.

Optimized Spectral Fault Receptive Fields for Diagnosis-Informed Prognosis

Abstract
This paper introduces Spectral Fault Receptive Fields (SFRFs), a biologically inspired technique for degradation state assessment in bearing fault diagnosis and remaining useful life (RUL) estimation. Drawing on the center-surround organization of retinal ganglion cell receptive fields, we propose a frequency-domain feature extraction algorithm that enhances the detection of fault signatures in vibration signals. SFRFs are designed as antagonistic spectral filters centered on characteristic fault frequencies, with inhibitory surrounds that enable robust characterization of incipient faults under variable operating conditions. A multi-objective evolutionary optimization strategy based on NSGA-II algorithm is employed to tune the receptive field parameters by simultaneously minimizing RUL prediction error, maximizing feature monotonicity, and promoting smooth degradation trajectories. The method is demonstrated on the XJTU-SY bearing run-to-failure dataset, confirming its suitability for constructing condition indicators in health monitoring applications. Key contributions include: (i) the introduction of SFRFs, inspired by the biology of vision in the primate retina; (ii) an evolutionary optimization framework guided by condition monitoring and prognosis criteria; and (iii) experimental evidence supporting the detection of early-stage faults and their precursors. Furthermore, we confirm that our diagnosis-informed spectral representation achieves accurate RUL prediction using a bagging regressor. The results highlight the interpretability and principled design of SFRFs, bridging signal processing, biological sensing principles, and data-driven prognostics in rotating machinery.
