Engineering Algorithms for Dynamic Greedy Set Cover

Abstract
In the dynamic set cover problem, the input is a dynamic universe of elements and a fixed collection of sets. As elements are inserted or deleted, the goal is to efficiently maintain an approximate minimum set cover. While the past decade has seen significant theoretical breakthroughs for this problem, a notable gap remains between theoretical design and practical performance, as no comprehensive experimental study currently exists to validate these results. In this paper, we bridge this gap by implementing and evaluating four greedy-based dynamic algorithms across a diverse range of real-world instances. We derive our implementations from state-of-the-art frameworks - such as [GKKP(STOC'17); SU(STOC'23); SUZ(FOCS'24)] - which we simplify by identifying and modifying intricate subroutines that optimize asymptotic bounds but hinder practical performance. We evaluate these algorithms based on solution quality (set cover size) and efficiency, which comprises update time - the time required to update the solution following each insertion/deletion - and recourse - the number of changes made to the solution per update. Each algorithm uses a parameter β to balance quality against efficiency; we investigate the influence of this tradeoff parameter on each algorithm and then perform a comparative analysis to evaluate the algorithms against each other. Our results provide the first practical insights into which algorithmic strategies provide the most value in realistic scenarios.

Dynamic MIS Revisited: Incremental, Fault Tolerant and Fully Dynamic

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 370, 20th Scandinavian Symposium on Algorithm Theory (SWAT 2026)

Abstract
Given a dynamic graph G, we aim to maintain a maximal independent set (MIS). This problem admits a deterministic solution in O(m^{2/3}) time [SOSA21], while randomized algorithms for oblivious adversary take O(polylog n) [FOCS19] time. Recently, Bernstein et al. [SODA26] proved a conditional lower bound of Ω(n^{1-o(1)}) amortized update time even for incremental MIS with adaptive adversary. In this paper, we establish similar deterministic bounds through the lens of incremental and fault tolerant algorithms for MIS, and show the following: 1) Incremental: MIS can be maintained under edge insertions in O(√m) amortized update time. 2) Fault Tolerant: Using O(m) preprocessing time, the MIS can be reported after k edge deletions in O(k+ ̅{n}²) time, where ̅{n} is the number of vertices on which deleted edges are incident. 3) Fully Dynamic: MIS can be maintained under fully dynamic edge updates (insertions and deletions) in O(m^{2/3}) amortized update time. Our incremental result is thus polynomially optimal even on allowing randomization with an adaptive adversary. Our fully dynamic result matches the state-of-the-art [SOSA21], and uses our incremental and fault tolerant algorithms as a black box. Although our fully dynamic algorithm does not improve the existing bounds, it provides additional insights into the harder edge-insertion case. We believe these insights may potentially be useful for improving the bounds for fully dynamic MIS in the future to match the incremental MIS bounds.

Weighted Chairman Assignment and Flow-Time Scheduling

Authors: Siyue Liu and Victor Reis

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 362, 17th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2026)

Abstract
Given positive integers m, n, a fractional assignment x ∈ [0,1]^{m × n} and weights d ∈ ℝⁿ_{> 0}, we show that there exists an assignment y ∈ {0,1}^{m × n} so that for every i ∈ [m] and t ∈ [n], |∑_{j ∈ [t]} d_j (x_{ij} - y_{ij})| < max_{j ∈ [n]} d_j. This generalizes a result of Tijdeman (1973) on the unweighted version, known as the chairman assignment problem. This also confirms a special case of the single-source unsplittable flow conjecture with arc-wise lower and upper bounds due to Morell and Skutella (IPCO 2020). As an application, we consider a scheduling problem where jobs have release times and machines have closing times, and a job can only be scheduled on a machine if it is released before the machine closes. We give a 3-approximation algorithm for maximum flow-time minimization.

Query Lower Bounds for Correlation Clustering Under Memory Constraints

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 362, 17th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2026)

Abstract
This work initiates the study of memory–query tradeoffs for graph problems, with a focus on correlation clustering. Correlation clustering asks for a partition of the vertices that minimizes disagreements: non‑edges inside clusters plus edges across clusters. Our first result is a tight query lower bound: to output a partition whose cost approximates the optimum up to an additive error of ε n², any algorithm requires Ω(n/ε²) adjacency-matrix queries. Under memory constraints, we show that even for the seemingly easier task of approximating the optimal clustering cost (without producing a partition), any algorithm in the random query model must make ≫ n/ε² adjacency-matrix queries. Finally, we prove the first general graph model query lower bound for correlation clustering, where algorithms are allowed adjacency-matrix, neighbor, and degree queries. The latter two bounds are not yet tight, leaving room for sharper results.

Fixed-Parameter Tractable Submodular Maximization over a Matroid

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 362, 17th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2026)

Abstract
In this paper, we design fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) algorithms for (non-monotone) submodular maximization subject to a matroid constraint, where the matroid rank r is treated as a fixed parameter that is independent of the total number of elements n. We provide two FPT algorithms: one for the offline setting and another for the random-order streaming setting. Our streaming algorithm achieves a 1/2-ε approximation using Õ(r/poly(ε)) memory, while our offline algorithm obtains a 1-(1)/(e)-ε approximation with n⋅ 2^{Õ(r/poly(ε))} runtime and Õ(r/poly(ε)) memory. Both approximation factors are near-optimal in their respective settings, given existing hardness results. In particular, our offline algorithm demonstrates that - unlike in the polynomial-time regime - there is essentially no separation between monotone and non-monotone submodular maximization under a matroid constraint in the FPT framework.

On the Randomized Locality of Matching Problems in Regular Graphs

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 356, 39th International Symposium on Distributed Computing (DISC 2025)

Abstract
The main goal in distributed symmetry-breaking is to understand the locality of problems: the radius of the neighborhood that a node must explore to determine its part of a global solution. In this work, we study the locality of matching problems in the family of regular graphs, which is one of the main benchmarks for establishing lower bounds on the locality of symmetry-breaking problems, as well as for obtaining classification results. Our main results are summarized as follows: 1) Approximate matching: We develop randomized algorithms to show that (1 + ε)-approximate matching in regular graphs is truly local, i.e., the locality depends only on ε and is independent of all other graph parameters. Furthermore, as long as the degree Δ is not very small (namely, as long as Δ ≥ poly(1/ε)), this dependence is only logarithmic in 1/ε. This stands in sharp contrast to maximal matching in regular graphs which requires some dependence on the number of nodes n or the degree Δ. 2) Maximal matching: Our techniques further allow us to establish a strong separation between the node-averaged complexity and worst-case complexity of maximal matching in regular graphs, by showing that the former is only O(1). Central to our main technical contribution is a novel martingale-based analysis for the ≈ 40-year-old algorithm by Luby. In particular, our analysis shows that applying one round of Luby’s algorithm on the line graph of a Δ-regular graph results in an almost Δ/2-regular graph.

Semi-Streaming Algorithms for Hypergraph Matching

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
We propose two one-pass streaming algorithms for the NP-hard hypergraph matching problem. The first algorithm stores a small subset of potential matching edges in a stack using dual variables to select edges. It has an approximation guarantee of 1/(d(1+ε)) and requires 𝒪((n/ε)log²n) bits of memory, where n is the number of vertices in the hypergraph, d is the maximum number of vertices in a hyperedge, and ε > 0 is a parameter to be chosen. The second algorithm computes, stores, and updates a single matching as the edges stream, with an approximation ratio dependent on a parameter α. Its best approximation guarantee is 1/((2d-1) + 2 √{d(d-1)}), and it requires only 𝒪(n) memory. We have implemented both algorithms and compared them with respect to solution quality, memory consumption, and running times on two diverse sets of hypergraphs with a non-streaming greedy and a naive streaming algorithm. Our results show that the streaming algorithms achieve much better solution quality than naive algorithms when facing adverse orderings. Furthermore, these algorithms reduce the memory required by a factor of 13 in the geometric mean on our test problems, and also outperform the offline Greedy algorithm in running time.

RANDOM
Sublinear Space Graph Algorithms in the Continual Release Model

Abstract
The graph continual release model of differential privacy seeks to produce differentially private solutions to graph problems under a stream of edge updates where new private solutions are released after each update. Thus far, previously known edge-differentially private algorithms for most graph problems including densest subgraph and matchings in the continual release setting only output real-value estimates (not vertex subset solutions) and do not use sublinear space. Instead, they rely on computing exact graph statistics on the input [Hendrik Fichtenberger et al., 2021; Shuang Song et al., 2018]. In this paper, we leverage sparsification to address the above shortcomings for edge-insertion streams. Our edge-differentially private algorithms use sublinear space with respect to the number of edges in the graph while some also achieve sublinear space in the number of vertices in the graph. In addition, for the densest subgraph problem, we also output edge-differentially private vertex subset solutions; no previous graph algorithms in the continual release model output such subsets. We make novel use of assorted sparsification techniques from the non-private streaming and static graph algorithms literature to achieve new results in the sublinear space, continual release setting. This includes algorithms for densest subgraph, maximum matching, as well as the first continual release k-core decomposition algorithm. We also develop a novel sparse level data structure for k-core decomposition that may be of independent interest. To complement our insertion-only algorithms, we conclude with polynomial additive error lower bounds for edge-privacy in the fully dynamic setting, where only logarithmic lower bounds were previously known.

Analysis of EDF for Real-Time Multiprocessor Systems with Resource Sharing

Abstract
The classic Earliest Deadline First (EDF) algorithm is widely studied and used due to its simplicity and strong theoretical performance, but has not been rigorously analyzed for systems where jobs may execute critical sections protected by shared locks. Analyzing such systems is often challenging due to unpredictable delays caused by contention. In this paper, we propose a straightforward generalization of EDF, called EDF-Block. In this generalization, the critical sections are executed non-preemptively, but scheduling and lock acquisition priorities are based on EDF. We establish lower bounds on the speed augmentation required for any non-clairvoyant scheduler (EDF-Block is an example of non-clairvoyant schedulers) and for EDF-Block, showing that EDF-Block requires at least 4.11× speed augmentation for jobs and 4× for tasks. We then provide an upper bound analysis, demonstrating that EDF-Block requires speedup of at most 6 to schedule all feasible job and task sets.

Minimizing Recourse in an Adaptive Balls and Bins Game

Authors: Adi Fine, Haim Kaplan, and Uri Stemmer

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
We consider a simple load-balancing game between an algorithm and an adaptive adversary. In a simplified version of this game, the adversary observes the assignment of jobs to machines and selects a machine to kill. The algorithm must then restart the jobs from the failed machine on other machines. The adversary repeats this process, observing the new assignment and eliminating another machine, and so on. The adversary aims to force the algorithm to perform many restarts, while we seek a robust algorithm that minimizes restarts regardless of the adversary’s strategy. This game was recently introduced by Bhattacharya et al. for designing a 3-spanner with low recourse against an adaptive adversary. We prove that a simple algorithm, which assigns each job to a randomly chosen live bin, incurs O(n log n) recourse against an adaptive adversary. This enables us to construct a much simpler 3-spanner with a recourse that is smaller by a factor of O(log² n) compared to the previous construction, without increasing the update time or the size of the spanner. This motivates a careful examination of the range of attacks an adaptive adversary can deploy against simple algorithms before resorting to more complex ones. As our case study demonstrates, this attack space may not be as large as it initially appears, enabling the development of robust algorithms that are both simpler and easier to analyze.

Decremental (1+ε)-Approximate Maximum Eigenvector: Dynamic Power Method

Abstract
We present a dynamic algorithm for maintaining (1+ε)-approximate maximum eigenvector and eigenvalue of a positive semi-definite matrix A undergoing decreasing updates, i.e., updates which may only decrease eigenvalues. Given a vector v updating A ← A-vv^⊤, our algorithm takes Õ(nnz(v)) amortized update time, i.e., polylogarithmic per non-zeros in the update vector. Our technique is based on a novel analysis of the influential power method in the dynamic setting. The two previous sets of techniques have the following drawbacks (1) algebraic techniques can maintain exact solutions but their update time is at least polynomial per non-zeros, and (2) sketching techniques admit polylogarithmic update time but suffer from a crude additive approximation. Our algorithm exploits an oblivious adversary. Interestingly, we show that any algorithm with polylogarithmic update time per non-zeros that works against an adaptive adversary and satisfies an additional natural property would imply a breakthrough for checking psd-ness of matrices in Õ(n²) time, instead of O(n^ω) time.

Faster Semi-Streaming Matchings via Alternating Trees

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
We design a deterministic algorithm for the (1+ε)-approximate maximum matching problem. Our primary result demonstrates that this problem can be solved in O(ε^{-6}) semi-streaming passes, improving upon the O(ε^{-19}) pass-complexity algorithm by [Fischer, Mitrović, and Uitto, STOC'22]. This contributes substantially toward resolving Open question 2 from [Assadi, SOSA'24]. Leveraging the framework introduced in [FMU'22], our algorithm achieves an analogous round complexity speed-up for computing a (1+ε)-approximate maximum matching in both the Massively Parallel Computation (MPC) and CONGEST models. The data structures maintained by our algorithm are formulated using blossom notation and represented through alternating trees. This approach enables a simplified correctness analysis by treating specific components as if operating on bipartite graphs, effectively circumventing certain technical intricacies present in prior work.

Fitting Tree Metrics and Ultrametrics in Data Streams

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
Fitting distances to tree metrics and ultrametrics are two widely used methods in hierarchical clustering, primarily explored within the context of numerical taxonomy. Formally, given a positive distance function D: binom(V,2) → ℝ_{>0}, the goal is to find a tree (or an ultrametric) T including all elements of set V, such that the difference between the distances among vertices in T and those specified by D is minimized. Numerical taxonomy was first introduced by Sneath and Sokal [Nature 1962], and since then it has been studied extensively in both biology and computer science. In this paper, we initiate the study of ultrametric and tree metric fitting problems in the semi-streaming model, where the distances between pairs of elements from V (with |V| = n), defined by the function D, can arrive in an arbitrary order. We study these problems under various distance norms; namely the 𝓁₀ objective, which aims to minimize the number of modified entries in D to fit a tree-metric or an ultrametric; the 𝓁₁ objective, which seeks to minimize the total sum of distance errors across all pairs of points in V; and the 𝓁_∞ objective, which focuses on minimizing the maximum error incurred by any entries in D. - Our first result addresses the 𝓁₀ objective. We provide a single-pass polynomial-time Õ(n)-space O(1) approximation algorithm for ultrametrics and prove that no single-pass exact algorithm exists, even with exponential time. - Next, we show that the algorithm for 𝓁₀ implies an O(Δ/δ) approximation for the 𝓁₁ objective, where Δ is the maximum, and δ is the minimum absolute difference between distances in the input. This bound matches the best-known approximation for the RAM model using a combinatorial algorithm when Δ/δ = O(n). - For the 𝓁_∞ objective, we provide a complete characterization of the ultrametric fitting problem. First, we present a single-pass polynomial-time Õ(n)-space 2-approximation algorithm and show that no better than 2-approximation is possible, even with exponential time. Furthermore, we show that with an additional pass, it is possible to achieve a polynomial-time exact algorithm for ultrametrics. - Finally, we extend all these results to tree metrics by using only one additional pass through the stream and without asymptotically increasing the approximation factor.

3.415-Approximation for Coflow Scheduling via Iterated Rounding

Authors: Lars Rohwedder and Leander Schnaars

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
We provide an algorithm giving a 140/41 (< 3.415)-approximation for Coflow Scheduling and a 4.36-approximation for Coflow Scheduling with release dates. This improves upon the best known 4- and respectively 5-approximations and addresses an open question posed by Agarwal, Rajakrishnan, Narayan, Agarwal, Shmoys, and Vahdat [Agarwal et al., 2018], Fukunaga [Fukunaga, 2022], and others. We additionally show that in an asymptotic setting, the algorithm achieves a (2+ε)-approximation, which is essentially optimal under ℙ ≠ NP. The improvements are achieved using a novel edge allocation scheme using iterated LP rounding together with a framework which enables establishing strong bounds for combinations of several edge allocation algorithms.

Online Matching with Delays and Size-Based Costs

Authors: Yasushi Kawase and Tomohiro Nakayoshi

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 327, 42nd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2025)

Abstract
In this paper, we introduce the problem of Online Matching with Delays and Size-based Costs (OMDSC). The OMDSC problem involves m requests arriving online. At any time, a group can be formed by matching any number of requests that have been received but remain unmatched. The cost associated with each group is determined by the waiting time for each request within the group and size-dependent cost. The size-dependent cost is specified by a penalty function. Our goal is to partition all the incoming requests into multiple groups while minimizing the total associated cost. This problem is an extension of the TCP acknowledgment problem proposed by Dooly et al. (J. ACM, 2001). It generalizes the cost model for sending acknowledgments. This study reveals the competitive ratios for a fundamental case, in which the penalty function takes only values of either 0 or 1. We classify such penalty functions into three distinct cases: (i) a fixed penalty of 1 regardless of the group size, (ii) a penalty of 0 if and only if the group size is a multiple of a specific integer k, and (iii) other situations. The problem in case (i) is equivalent to the TCP acknowledgment problem, for which Dooly et al. proposed a 2-competitive algorithm. For case (ii), we first show that natural algorithms that match all remaining requests are Ω(√k)-competitive. We then propose an O(log k / log log k)-competitive deterministic algorithm by carefully managing the match size and timing, and prove its optimality. For any penalty function in case (iii), we demonstrate the non-existence of a competitive online algorithm. Additionally, we discuss competitive ratios for other typical penalty functions that are not restricted to take values of 0 or 1.
