Foremost, Fastest, Shortest: Temporal Graph Realization Under Various Path Metrics

Abstract
In this work, we follow the current trend on temporal graph realization, where one is given a property P and the goal is to determine whether there is a temporal graph, that is, a graph where the edge set changes over time, with property P. We consider the problems where the given property P is a prescribed matrix for the duration, length, or earliest arrival time of pairwise temporal paths. This means that we are given a matrix D and ask whether there is a temporal graph such that for any ordered pair of vertices (s,t), D_{s,t} equals the duration (length, or earliest arrival time, respectively) of any temporal path from s to t minimizing that specific temporal path metric. For shortest and earliest arrival temporal paths, we are the first to consider these problems as far as we know. We analyze these problems for many settings such as: strict and non-strict paths, periodic and non-periodic temporal graphs, and limited number of labels per edge (limited number of occurrences per edge over time). In contrast to all other path metrics, we show that for the earliest arrival times, we can achieve polynomial-time algorithms in periodic and non-periodic temporal graphs and for strict and and non-strict paths. However, the problem becomes NP-hard when the matrix does not contain a single integer but a set or range of possible allowed values. As we show, the problem can still be solved efficiently in this scenario, when the number of entries with more than one value is small, that is, we develop an FPT-algorithm for the number of such entries. For the setting of fastest paths, we achieve new hardness results that answers an open question by Klobas, Mertzios, Molter, and Spirakis [Theor. Comput. Sci. '25] about the parameterized complexity of the problem with respect to the vertex cover number and significantly improves over a previous hardness result for the feedback vertex set number. When considering shortest paths, we show that the periodic versions are polynomial-time solvable whereas the non-periodic versions become NP-hard.

Fairness in the k-Server Problem

Abstract
We initiate a formal study of fairness for the k-server problem, where the objective is not only to minimize the total movement cost, but also to distribute the cost equitably among servers. We first define a general notion of (α,β)-fairness, where, for parameters α ≥ 1 and β ≥ 0, no server incurs more than an α/k-fraction of the total cost plus an additive term β. We then show that fairness can be achieved without a loss in competitiveness in both the offline and online settings. In the offline setting, we give a deterministic algorithm that, for any ε > 0, transforms any optimal solution into an (α,β)-fair solution for α = 1 + ε and β = O(diam ⋅ log k / ε), while increasing the cost of the solution by just an additive O(diam ⋅ k log k / ε) term. Here diam is the diameter of the underlying metric space. We give a similar result in the online setting, showing that any competitive algorithm can be transformed into a randomized online algorithm that is fair with high probability against an oblivious adversary and still competitive up to a small loss. The above results leave open a significant question: can fairness be achieved in the online setting, either with a deterministic algorithm or a randomized algorithm, against a fully adaptive adversary? We make progress towards answering this question, showing that the classic deterministic Double Coverage Algorithm (DCA) is fair on line metrics and on tree metrics when k = 2. However, we also show a negative result: DCA fails to be fair for any non-vacuous parameters on general tree metrics. We further show that on uniform metrics (i.e., the paging problem), the deterministic First-In First-Out (FIFO) algorithm is fair. We show that any "marking algorithm", including the Least Recently Used (LRU) algorithm, also satisfies a weaker, but still meaningful notion of fairness.

On the Complexity of Secluded Path Problems

Abstract
This paper investigates the complexity of finding secluded paths in graphs. We focus on the Short Secluded Path problem and a natural new variant we introduce, Shortest Secluded Path. Formally, given an undirected graph G = (V, E), two vertices s,t ∈ V, and two integers k,l, the Short Secluded Path problem asks whether there exists an s-t path of length at most k with at most l neighbors. This problem is known to be computationally hard: it is W[1]-hard when parameterized by the path length k or by cliquewidth, and para-NP-complete when parameterized by the number l of neighbors. The fixed-parameter tractability is known for k+l or treewidth. In this paper, we expand the parameterized complexity landscape by designing (1) an XP algorithm parameterized by cliquewidth and (2) fixed-parameter algorithms parameterized by neighborhood diversity and twin cover number, respectively. As a byproduct, our results also provide parameterized algorithms for the classic s-t k-Path problem. Furthermore, we introduce the Shortest Secluded Path problem, which seeks a shortest s-t path with the minimum number of neighbors. In contrast to the hardness of the original problem, we reveal that this variant is solvable in polynomial time on unweighted graphs. We complete this by showing that for edge-weighted graphs, the problem becomes W[1]-hard yet remains in XP when parameterized by the shortest path distance between s and t.

Timeline Problems in Temporal Graphs: Vertex Cover vs. Dominating Set

Abstract
A temporal graph is a finite sequence of graphs, called snapshots, over the same vertex set. Many temporal graph problems turn out to be much more difficult than their static counterparts. One such problem is Timeline Vertex Cover (also known as MinTimeline_∞), a temporal analogue to the classical Vertex Cover problem. In this problem, one is given a temporal graph 𝒢 and two integers k and 𝓁, and the goal is to cover each edge of each snapshot by selecting for each vertex at most k activity intervals of length at most 𝓁 each. Here, an edge uv in the ith snapshot is covered, if an activity interval of u or v is active at time i. In this work, we continue the algorithmic study of Timeline Vertex Cover and introduce the Timeline Dominating Set problem where we want to dominate all vertices in each snapshot by the selected activity intervals. We analyze both problems from a classical and parameterized point of view and also consider partial problem versions, where the goal is to cover (dominate) at least t edges (vertices) of the snapshots. With respect to the parameterized complexity, we consider the temporal graph parameters vertex-interval-membership-width (vimw) and interval-membership-width (imw). We show that all considered problems admit FPT-algorithms when parameterized by vimw+k+𝓁. This provides a smaller parameter combination than the ones used for previously known FPT-algorithms for Timeline Vertex Cover. Surprisingly, for imw+k+𝓁, Timeline Dominating Set turns out to be easier than Timeline Vertex Cover, by also admitting an FPT-algorithm, whereas the vertex cover version is NP-hard even if imw+k+𝓁 is constant. We also consider parameterization by combinations of n, the vertex set size, with k or 𝓁 and parameterization by t. Here, we show for example that both partial problems are fixed-parameter tractable for t which significantly improves and generalizes a previous result for a special case of Partial Timeline Vertex Cover with k = 1.

A Parameterized Study of Secluded Structures in Directed Graphs

Abstract
Given an undirected graph G and an integer k, the Secluded Π-Subgraph problem asks you to find a maximum size induced subgraph that satisfies a property Π and has at most k neighbors in the rest of the graph. This problem has been extensively studied; however, there is no prior study of the problem in directed graphs. This question has been mentioned by Jansen et al. [ISAAC'23]. In this paper, we initiate the study of Secluded Subgraph problems in directed graphs by incorporating different notions of neighborhoods: in-neighborhood, out-neighborhood, and their union. Formally, we call these problems {In, Out, Total}-Secluded Π-Subgraph, where given a directed graph G and an integer k, we want to find an induced subgraph satisfying Π of maximum size that has at most k in/out/total-neighbors in the rest of the graph, respectively. We investigate the parameterized complexity of these problems for different properties Π. In particular, we prove the following parameterized results: - We design an FPT algorithm for the Total-Secluded Strongly Connected Subgraph problem when parameterized by k. - We show that the Out-Secluded ℱ-Free Subgraph problem with parameter k is W[1]-hard, where ℱ is a family of directed graphs except any subgraph of a star graph whose edges are directed towards the center. This result also implies that In/Out-Secluded DAG is W[1]-hard, unlike the undirected variants of the two problems, which are FPT. - We design an FPT-algorithm for In/Out/Total-Secluded α-Bounded Subgraph when parameterized by k, where α-bounded graphs are a superclass of tournaments. - For undirected graphs, we improve the best-known FPT algorithm for Secluded Clique by providing a faster FPT algorithm that runs in time 1.6181^k n^𝒪(1).

Structural Parameterizations of Simultaneous Planarity

Abstract
Given a set of graphs on the same vertex set, the problem Simultaneous Embedding With Fixed Edges (SEFE) asks, whether there exist planar drawings of all input graphs, such that every pair of drawings coincides on their shared subgraph. It is known that SEFE is NP-complete [Elisabeth Gassner et al., 2006], even in the so-called sunflower case, where all pairs of input graphs have the same shared graph G_∩ [Marcus Schaefer, 2012]. Fink, Pfretzschner, and Rutter [Simon D. Fink et al., 2023] recently initiated the study of the parameterized complexity of SEFE in the sunflower case, mainly focusing on structural parameters of G_∩. In this work, we shift the focus towards parameters of the union graph G_∪ that contains the edges of all input graphs. On the positive side, we establish fixed-parameter tractability for the problem with respect to the feedback edge set number of G_∪. We complement this result by showing that it, surprisingly, remains NP-complete even if G_∪ has constant vertex cover number. These results settle two open questions posed by Fink et al. [Simon D. Fink et al., 2023].

Simple, Strict, Proper, and Directed: Comparing Reachability in Directed and Undirected Temporal Graphs

Abstract
Temporal graphs model networks whose connections are available only at specific points in time. Several definitional subtleties - whether paths must follow strictly increasing time labels (strict vs. non-strict), whether adjacent edges cannot appear simultaneously (proper), and whether edges are forbidden to appear multiple times (simple) - give rise to different temporal graph settings. These distinctions directly impact the definition of temporal reachability, a core concept in temporal graph theory. Casteigts, Corsini, and Sarkar [TCS24] introduced a framework of equivalence notions to compare the expressive power of these settings focusing solely on undirected temporal graphs. In this work, we extend their framework to include the fundamental dimension of directed vs. undirected. Our contribution is three-fold. We (1) complete the undirected hierarchy by resolving the two open questions from [TCS24], (2) fully characterize the hierarchy of the directed settings, and (3) compare the directed and undirected settings, showing that directed temporal graphs are strictly more expressive than undirected temporal graphs in terms of reachability. Our structural results highlight both the limitations and strengths of various temporal graph settings - for example, directed + strict + simple graphs can realize every possible reachability graph, while directed + proper graphs necessarily induce at least one transitive reachability on each directed cycle. We also provide transformation procedures between temporal settings offering practical tools for transferring algorithms and hardness results across models.

Recognizing and Realizing Temporal Reachability Graphs

Abstract
A temporal graph 𝒢 = (G,λ) can be represented by an underlying graph G = (V,E) together with a function λ that assigns to each edge e ∈ E the set of time steps during which e is present. The reachability graph of 𝒢 is the directed graph D = (V,A) with (u,v) ∈ A if and only if there is a temporal path from u to v. We study the Reachability Graph Realizability (RGR) problem that asks whether a given directed graph D = (V,A) is the reachability graph of some temporal graph. The question can be asked for undirected or directed temporal graphs, for reachability defined via strict or non-strict temporal paths, and with or without restrictions on λ (simple, proper, or both). Answering an open question posed by Casteigts et al. (TCS 2024), we show that all variants of the problem are NP-complete, except for two variants that become trivial in the directed case. For undirected temporal graphs, we consider the complexity of the problem with respect to the solid graph, that is, the graph containing all edges that could potentially receive a label in any realization. We show that the RGR problem is fixed-parameter tractable for the feedback edge set number of the solid graph. As we show, the latter parameter can presumably not be replaced by smaller parameters like feedback vertex set number or treedepth, since the problem is W[2]-hard for them.

Novel Complexity Results for Temporal Separators with Deadlines

Abstract
We consider two variants, (s,z,𝓁)-Temporal Separator and (s,z,𝓁)-Temporal Cut, respectively, of the vertex separator and the edge cut problem in temporal graphs. The goal is to remove the minimum number of vertices (temporal edges, respectively) in order to delete all the temporal paths that have time travel at most 𝓁 between a source vertex s and target vertex z. First, we solve an open problem in the literature showing that (s,z,𝓁)-Temporal Separator is NP-hard even when the underlying graph has pathwidth bounded by four. We complement this result showing that (s,z,𝓁)-Temporal Separator can be solved in polynomial time for graphs of pathwidth bounded by three. Then we consider the approximability of (s,z,𝓁)-Temporal Separator and we show that it cannot be approximated within factor 2^Ω(log^{1-ε}|V|) for any constant ε > 0, unless NP ⊆ ZPP (V is the vertex set of the input temporal graph) and that the strict version is approximable within factor 𝓁-1 (we show also that it is unliklely that this factor can be improved). Then we consider the (s,z,𝓁)-Temporal Cut problem, we show that it is APX-hard and we present a 2 log₂(2𝓁) approximation algorithm.

Temporal Graph Realization with Bounded Stretch

Abstract
A periodic temporal graph, in its simplest form, is a graph in which every edge appears exactly once in the first Δ time steps, and then it reappears recurrently every Δ time steps, where Δ is a given period length. This model offers a natural abstraction of transportation networks where each transportation link connects two destinations periodically. From a network design perspective, a crucial task is to assign the time-labels on the edges in a way that optimizes some criterion. In this paper we introduce a very natural optimality criterion that captures how the temporal distances of all vertex pairs are "stretched", compared to their physical distances, i.e. their distances in the underlying static (non-temporal) graph. Given a static graph G, the task is to assign to each edge one time-label between 1 and Δ such that, in the resulting periodic temporal graph with period Δ, the duration of the fastest temporal path from any vertex u to any other vertex v is at most α times the distance between u and v in G. Here, the value of α measures how much the shortest paths are allowed to be stretched once we assign the periodic time-labels. Our results span three different directions: First, we provide a series of approximation and NP-hardness results. Second, we provide approximation and fixed-parameter algorithms. Among them, we provide a simple polynomial-time algorithm (the radius-algorithm) which always guarantees an approximation strictly smaller than Δ, and which also computes the optimum stretch in some cases. Third, we consider a parameterized local search extension of the problem where we are given the temporal labeling of the graph, but we are allowed to change the time-labels of at most k edges; for this problem we prove that it is W[2]-hard but admits an XP algorithm with respect to k.

Treewidth Parameterized by Feedback Vertex Number

Abstract
We provide the first algorithm for computing an optimal tree decomposition for a given graph G that runs in single exponential time in the feedback vertex number of G, that is, in time 2^{𝒪(fvn(G))}⋅ n^{𝒪(1)}, where fvn(G) is the feedback vertex number of G and n is the number of vertices of G. On a classification level, this improves the previously known results by Chapelle et al. [Discrete Applied Mathematics '17] and Fomin et al. [Algorithmica '18], who independently showed that an optimal tree decomposition can be computed in single exponential time in the vertex cover number of G. One of the biggest open problems in the area of parameterized complexity is whether we can compute an optimal tree decomposition in single exponential time in the treewidth of the input graph. The currently best known algorithm by Korhonen and Lokshtanov [STOC '23] runs in 2^{𝒪(tw(G)²)}⋅ n⁴ time, where tw(G) is the treewidth of G. Our algorithm improves upon this result on graphs G where fvn(G) ∈ o(tw(G)²). On a different note, since fvn(G) is an upper bound on tw(G), our algorithm can also be seen either as an important step towards a positive resolution of the above-mentioned open problem, or, if its answer is negative, then a mark of the tractability border of single exponential time algorithms for the computation of treewidth.

Temporal Dominating Set and Temporal Vertex Cover Under the Lense of Degree Restrictions

Abstract
We study the Temporal Dominating Set problem, in which one asks whether a temporal graph 𝒢 = (G₁,… , G_T) given as a sequence of snapshot graphs, over the same vertex set V, has a set S of temporal vertices of size at most k such that each vertex v of V is dominated by some w ∈ S in the snapshot that contains w. Additionally, we consider Temporal Partial Dominating Set, where one asks whether at least t (and not necessarily all) vertices of V can be dominated by S and a further generalization in which the solution may only contain a bounded number of temporal vertices from each snapshot. We analyze how the complexity of Temporal (Partial) Dominating Set is influenced by the maximum snapshot degree and the structure of the underlying graph, the graph with vertex set V and whose edge set is the union of all snapshot edge sets. For example, we obtain a complexity dichotomy for the maximum snapshot degree and we show that Temporal Partial Dominating Set is fixed-parameter tractable for tw+Δ, where tw and Δ denote the treewidth and the maximum degree of the underlying graph of 𝒢, respectively. We also show which of our results transfer to the well-studied Temporal Vertex Cover problem. For example, we show that Temporal Vertex Cover is also fixed-parameter tractable for tw+Δ which substantially extends the previously known polynomial-time algorithms for the case that the underlying graph is a path or cycle.

Protecting the Connectivity of a Graph Under Non-Uniform Edge Failures

Abstract
We study the problem of guaranteeing the connectivity of a given graph by protecting or strengthening edges. Herein, a protected edge is assumed to be robust and will not fail, which features a non-uniform failure model. We introduce the (p,q)-Steiner-Connectivity Preservation problem where we protect a minimum-cost set of edges such that the underlying graph maintains p-edge-connectivity between given terminal pairs against edge failures, assuming at most q unprotected edges can fail. We design polynomial-time exact algorithms for the cases where p and q are small and approximation algorithms for general values of p and q. Additionally, we show that when both p and q are part of the input, even deciding whether a given solution is feasible is NP-complete. This hardness also carries over to Flexible Network Design, a research direction that has gained significant attention. In particular, previous work focuses on problem settings where either p or q is constant, for which our new hardness result now provides justification.

Finding Degree-Constrained Acyclic Orientations

Abstract
We consider the problem of orienting a given, undirected graph into a (directed) acyclic graph such that the in-degree of each vertex v is in a prescribed list λ(v). Variants of this problem have been studied for a long time and with various applications, but mostly without the requirement for acyclicity. Without this requirement, the problem is closely related to the classical General Factor problem, which is known to be NP-hard in general, but polynomial-time solvable if no list λ(v) contains large "gaps" [Cornuéjols, J. Comb. Theory B, 1988]. In contrast, we show that deciding if an acyclic orientation exists is NP-hard even in the absence of such "gaps". On the positive side, we design parameterized algorithms for various, natural parameterizations of the acyclic orientation problem. A special case of the orientation problem with degree constraints recently came up in the context of reconstructing evolutionary histories (that is, phylogenetic networks). This phylogenetic setting imposes additional structure onto the problem that can be exploited algorithmically, allowing us to show fixed-parameter tractability when parameterized by either the treewidth of G (a smaller parameter than the frequently employed "level"), by the number of vertices v for which |λ(v)| ≥ 2, by the number of vertices v for which the highest value in λ(v) is at least 2. While the latter result can be extended to the general degree-constraint acyclic orientation problem, we show that the former cannot unless FPT=W[1].

Restless Temporal Path Parameterized Above Lower Bounds

Abstract
Reachability questions are one of the most fundamental algorithmic primitives in temporal graphs - graphs whose edge set changes over discrete time steps. A core problem here is the NP-hard Short Restless Temporal Path: given a temporal graph G, two distinct vertices s and z, and two numbers δ and k, is there a δ-restless temporal s-z path of length at most k? A temporal path is a path whose edges appear in chronological order and a temporal path is δ-restless if two consecutive path edges appear at most δ time steps apart from each other. Among others, this problem has applications in neuroscience and epidemiology. While Short Restless Temporal Path is known to be computationally hard, e.g., it is NP-hard even if the temporal graph consists of three discrete time steps and it is W[1]-hard when parameterized by the feedback vertex number of the underlying graph, it is fixed-parameter tractable when parameterized by the path length k. We improve on this by showing that Short Restless Temporal Path can be solved in (randomized) 4^(k-d)|G|^O(1) time, where d is the minimum length of a temporal s-z path.
