Planting and MCMC Sampling from the Potts Model

Abstract
We consider the problem of sampling from the ferromagnetic q-state Potts model on the random d-regular graph with parameter β > 0. A key difficulty that arises in sampling from the model is the existence of a "metastability" window β ∈ (β_u,β_u'), where roughly the distribution has two competing modes, the so-called disordered and ordered phases. This causes classical Markov-chain algorithms to be slow mixing from worst-case initialisations. Nevertheless, Helmuth, Jenssen and Perkins (SODA '19) designed a sampling algorithm that works for all β, when d ≥ 5 and q = d^{Ω(d)}, using polymers and cluster expansion methods; more recently, their analysis technique has been adapted to show that a Markov chain (random-cluster dynamics) mixes fast when initialised appropriately, in the same regime of q,d,β. Despite these positive algorithmic results, a well-known bottleneck behind cluster-expansion arguments is that they inherently only work for large q, whereas it is widely conjectured that sampling on the random d-regular graph is possible for all q,d ≥ 3. The only result so far that applies to general q,d ≥ 3 is by Blanca and Gheissari who showed that the random-cluster dynamics mixes fast in the "uniqueness" regime β < β_u where roughly only the disordered mode exists. For β ≥ β_u however, a second subdominant mode emerges creating bottlenecks and giving rise to correlations which have been hard to handle, especially for small values of q and d. Our main contribution is to perform a delicate analysis of the Potts distribution and the random-cluster dynamics that goes beyond the threshold β_u. We use planting as the main tool, a technique used in the analysis of random CSPs to capture how the space of solutions is correlated with the structure of the random instance. While planting arguments provide only weak sampling guarantees generically, here we instead combine planting with the analysis of random-cluster dynamics to obtain significantly stronger guarantees. We are thus able to show that the random-cluster dynamics initialised from all-out mixes fast for all integers q,d ≥ 3 beyond the uniqueness threshold β_u, all the way to the optimal threshold β_c ∈ (β_u,β_u') where the dominant mode switches from disordered to ordered. A more involved analysis also applies to the ordered regime β > β_c where we obtain an algorithm for all d ≥ 3 and q ≥ (5d)⁵, improving significantly upon the previous range of q,d by Carlson, Davies, Fraiman, Kolla, Potukuchi, and Yap (FOCS'22).

Cutoff for the Swendsen–Wang Dynamics on the Complete Graph

Abstract
We study the speed of convergence of the Swendsen-Wang (SW) dynamics for the q-state ferromagnetic Potts model on the n-vertex complete graph, known as the mean-field model. The SW dynamics was introduced as an attractive alternative to the local Glauber dynamics, often offering faster convergence rates to stationarity in a variety of settings. A series of works have characterized the asymptotic behavior of the speed of convergence of the mean-field SW dynamics for all q ≥ 2 and all values of the inverse temperature parameter β > 0. In particular, it is known that when β > q the mixing time of the SW dynamics is Θ(log n). We strengthen this result by showing that for all β > q, there exists a constant c(β,q) > 0 such that the mixing time of the SW dynamics is c(β,q) log n + Θ(1). This implies that the mean-field SW dynamics exhibits the cutoff phenomenon in this temperature regime, demonstrating that this Markov chain undergoes a sharp transition from "far from stationarity" to "well-mixed" within a narrow Θ(1) time window. The presence of cutoff is algorithmically significant, as simulating the chain for fewer steps than its mixing time could lead to highly biased samples.

Coloring Reconfiguration Under Color Swapping

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 359, 36th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2025)

Abstract
In the Coloring Reconfiguration problem, we are given two proper k-colorings of a graph and asked to decide whether one can be transformed into the other by repeatedly applying a specified recoloring rule, while maintaining a proper coloring throughout. For this problem, two recoloring rules have been widely studied: single-vertex recoloring and Kempe chain recoloring. In this paper, we introduce a new rule, called color swapping, where two adjacent vertices may exchange their colors, so that the resulting coloring remains proper, and study the computational complexity of the problem under this rule. We first establish a complexity dichotomy with respect to k: the problem is solvable in polynomial time for k ≤ 2, and is PSPACE-complete for k ≥ 3. We further show that the problem remains PSPACE-complete even on restricted graph classes, including bipartite graphs, split graphs, and planar graphs of bounded degree. In contrast, we present polynomial-time algorithms for several graph classes: for paths when k = 3, for split graphs when k is fixed, and for cographs when k is arbitrary.

Improved Algorithms for Quantum MaxCut via Partially Entangled Matchings

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
We introduce a 0.611-approximation algorithm for Quantum MaxCut and a (1+√5)/4 ≈ 0.809-approximation algorithm for the EPR Hamiltonian of [King, 2023]. A novel ingredient in both of these algorithms is to partially entangle pairs of qubits associated to edges in a matching, while preserving the direction of their single-qubit Bloch vectors. This allows us to interpolate between product states and matching-based states with a tunable parameter.

Triangles Improve 0.878 Approximation for Maxcut

Abstract
Maxcut is a fundamental problem in graph algorithms, extensively studied for its theoretical and practical significance. The goal is to partition the vertex set of a graph G = (V, E) into disjoint subsets S and V⧵S so as to maximize the number of edges crossing the cut (S,V⧵S). The seminal work of Goemans and Williamson [Goemans and Williamson, 1995] introduced a semidefinite programming (SDP) based algorithm achieving a α_{GW} ≈ 0.87856-approximation for general graphs, guaranteed to be optimal under the Unique Games Conjecture [Khot, 2002; Khot et al., 2007]. We revisit the Goemans–Williamson SDP and prove that the standard Maxcut SDP achieves a (α_{GW} + Ω(1))-approximation whenever the input graph contains Ω(|E|) edge-disjoint triangles. Our analysis builds on classical rounding techniques studied in [Goemans and Williamson, 1995; Zwick, 1999] and introduces a refined understanding of the SDP solution structure in regimes where the previous guarantees are tight. Our result identifies a simple combinatorial property that may be satisfied by many natural graph classes. As applications, we show that unit ball graphs and graphs satisfying a spectral transitivity condition (as studied in [Gupta et al., 2016; Basu et al., 2024]) meet our structural criterion, and therefore we get better than α_{GW} approximation guarantees for them. Our algorithm runs in nearly linear time 𝒪̃(|E|), offering a more practical alternative to the PTAS of [Jansen et al., 2005] for unit ball graphs, which has exponential dependence on the approximation parameter.

Abstract
The EPR Hamiltonian is a family of 2-local quantum Hamiltonians introduced by King [King, 2023]. Min-CSPs on Complete Instances II: Polylogarithmic Approximation for Min-NAE-3-SAT

Authors: Aditya Anand, Euiwoong Lee, Davide Mazzali, and Amatya Sharma

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 353, Approximation, Randomization, and Combinatorial Optimization. Algorithms and Techniques (APPROX/RANDOM 2025)

Abstract
This paper studies complete k-Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs), where an n-variable instance has exactly one nontrivial constraint for each subset of k variables, i.e., it has binom(n,k) constraints. A recent work started a systematic study of complete k-CSPs [Anand, Lee, Sharma, SODA'25], and showed a quasi-polynomial time algorithm that decides if there is an assignment satisfying all the constraints of any complete Boolean-alphabet k-CSP, algorithmically separating complete instances from dense instances. The tractability of this decision problem is necessary for any nontrivial (multiplicative) approximation for the minimization version, whose goal is to minimize the number of violated constraints. The same paper raised the question of whether it is possible to obtain nontrivial approximation algorithms for complete Min-k-CSPs with k ≥ 3. In this work, we make progress in this direction and show a quasi-polynomial time polylog(n)-approximation to Min-NAE-3-SAT on complete instances, which asks to minimize the number of 3-clauses where all the three literals equal the same bit. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first known example of a CSP whose decision version is NP-Hard in general (and dense) instances while admitting a polylog(n)-approximation in complete instances. Our algorithm presents a new iterative framework for rounding a solution from the Sherali-Adams hierarchy, where each iteration interleaves the two well-known rounding tools: the conditioning procedure, in order to "almost fix" many variables, and the thresholding procedure, in order to "completely fix" them. Finally, we improve the running time of the decision algorithms of Anand, Lee, and Sharma and show a simple algorithm that decides any complete Boolean-alphabet k-CSP in polynomial time.

Sparsest Cut and Eigenvalue Multiplicities on Low Degree Abelian Cayley Graphs

Authors: Tommaso d'Orsi, Chris Jones, Jake Ruotolo, Salil Vadhan, and Jiyu Zhang

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 353, Approximation, Randomization, and Combinatorial Optimization. Algorithms and Techniques (APPROX/RANDOM 2025)

Abstract
Whether or not the Sparsest Cut problem admits an efficient O(1)-approximation algorithm is a fundamental algorithmic question with connections to geometry and the Unique Games Conjecture. Revisiting spectral algorithms for Sparsest Cut, we present a novel, simple algorithm that combines eigenspace enumeration with a new algorithm for the Cut Improvement problem. The runtime of our algorithm is parametrized by a quantity that we call the solution dimension SD_ε(G): the smallest k such that the subspace spanned by the first k Laplacian eigenvectors contains all but ε fraction of a sparsest cut. Our algorithm matches the guarantees of prior methods based on the threshold-rank paradigm, while also extending beyond them. To illustrate this, we study its performance on low degree Cayley graphs over Abelian groups - canonical examples of graphs with poor expansion properties. We prove that low degree Abelian Cayley graphs have small solution dimension, yielding an algorithm that computes a (1+ε)-approximation to the uniform Sparsest Cut of a degree-d Cayley graph over an Abelian group of size n in time n^O(1) ⋅ exp{(d/ε)^O(d)}. Along the way to bounding the solution dimension of Abelian Cayley graphs, we analyze their sparse cuts and spectra, proving that the collection of O(1)-approximate sparsest cuts has an ε-net of size exp{(d/ε)^O(d)} and that the multiplicity of λ₂ is bounded by 2^O(d). The latter bound is tight and improves on a previous bound of 2^O(d²) by Lee and Makarychev.

Low-Temperature Sampling on Sparse Random Graphs

Authors: Andreas Galanis, Leslie Ann Goldberg, and Paulina Smolarova

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
We consider sampling in the so-called low-temperature regime, which is typically characterised by non-local behaviour and strong global correlations. Canonical examples include sampling independent sets on bipartite graphs and sampling from the ferromagnetic q-state Potts model. Low-temperature sampling is computationally intractable for general graphs, but recent advances based on the polymer method have made significant progress for graph families that exhibit certain expansion properties that reinforce the correlations, including for example expanders, lattices and dense graphs. One of the most natural graph classes that has so far escaped this algorithmic framework is the class of sparse Erdős-Rényi random graphs whose expansion only manifests for sufficiently large subsets of vertices; small sets of vertices on the other hand have vanishing expansion which makes them behave independently from the bulk of the graph and therefore weakens the correlations. At a more technical level, the expansion of small sets is crucial for establishing the Kotecky-Priess condition which underpins the applicability of the framework. Our main contribution is to develop the polymer method in the low-temperature regime for sparse random graphs. As our running example, we use the Potts and random-cluster models on G(n,d/n) for d = Θ(1), where we show a polynomial-time sampling algorithm for all sufficiently large q and d, at all temperatures. Our approach applies more generally for models that are monotone. Key to our result is a simple polymer definition that blends easily with the connectivity properties of the graph and allows us to show that polymers have size at most O(log n).

Abstract
We consider the problem of finding a minimum cut of a weighted graph presented as a single-pass stream. While graph sparsification in streams has been intensively studied, the specific application of finding minimum cuts in streams is less well-studied. To this end, we show upper and lower bounds on minimum cut problems in insertion-only streams for a variety of settings, including for both randomized and deterministic algorithms, for both arbitrary and random order streams, and for both approximate and exact algorithms. One of our main results is an Õ(n/ε) space algorithm with fast update time for approximating a spectral cut query with high probability on a stream given in an arbitrary order. Our result breaks the Ω(n/ε²) space lower bound required of a sparsifier that approximates all cuts simultaneously. Using this result, we provide streaming algorithms with near optimal space of Õ(n/ε) for minimum cut and approximate all-pairs effective resistances, with matching space lower-bounds. The amortized update time of our algorithms is Õ(1), provided that the number of edges in the input graph is at least (n/ε²)^{1+o(1)}. We also give a generic way of incorporating sketching into a recursive contraction algorithm to improve the post-processing time of our algorithms. In addition to these results, we give a random-order streaming algorithm that computes the exact minimum cut on a simple, unweighted graph using Õ(n) space. Finally, we give an Ω(n/ε²) space lower bound for deterministic minimum cut algorithms which matches the best-known upper bound up to polylogarithmic factors.

Hardness of Sampling for the Anti-Ferromagnetic Ising Model on Random Graphs

Authors: Neng Huang, Will Perkins, and Aaron Potechin

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 325, 16th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2025)

Abstract
We prove a hardness of sampling result for the anti-ferromagnetic Ising model on random graphs of average degree d for large constant d, proving that when the normalized inverse temperature satisfies β > 1 (asymptotically corresponding to the condensation threshold), then w.h.p. over the random graph there is no stable sampling algorithm that can output a sample close in W₂ distance to the Gibbs measure. The results also apply to a fixed-magnetization version of the model, showing that there are no stable sampling algorithms for low but positive temperature max and min bisection distributions. These results show a gap in the tractability of search and sampling problems: while there are efficient algorithms to find near optimizers, stable sampling algorithms cannot access the Gibbs distribution concentrated on such solutions. Our techniques involve extensions of the interpolation technique relating behavior of the mean field Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model to behavior of Ising models on random graphs of average degree d for large d. While previous interpolation arguments compared the free energies of the two models, our argument compares the average energies and average overlaps in the two models.

A Spectral Approach to Approximately Counting Independent Sets in Dense Bipartite Graphs

Abstract
We give a randomized algorithm that approximates the number of independent sets in a dense, regular bipartite graph - in the language of approximate counting, we give an FPRAS for #BIS on the class of dense, regular bipartite graphs. Efficient counting algorithms typically apply to "high-temperature" problems on bounded-degree graphs, and our contribution is a notable exception as it applies to dense graphs in a low-temperature setting. Our methods give a counting-focused complement to the long line of work in combinatorial optimization showing that CSPs such as Max-Cut and Unique Games are easy on dense graphs via spectral arguments. Our contributions include a novel extension of the method of graph containers that differs considerably from other recent low-temperature algorithms. The additional key insights come from spectral graph theory and have previously been successful in approximation algorithms. As a result, we can overcome some limitations that seem inherent to the aforementioned class of algorithms. In particular, we exploit the fact that dense, regular graphs exhibit a kind of small-set expansion (i.e., bounded threshold rank), which, via subspace enumeration, lets us enumerate small cuts efficiently.

Exact Recovery Algorithm for Planted Bipartite Graph in Semi-Random Graphs

Authors: Akash Kumar, Anand Louis, and Rameesh Paul

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 229, 49th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2022)

Abstract
The problem of finding the largest induced balanced bipartite subgraph in a given graph is NP-hard. This problem is closely related to the problem of finding the smallest Odd Cycle Transversal. In this work, we consider the following model of instances: starting with a set of vertices V, a set S ⊆ V of k vertices is chosen and an arbitrary d-regular bipartite graph is added on it; edges between pairs of vertices in S× (V⧵S) and (V⧵S) × (V⧵S) are added with probability p. Since for d = 0, the problem reduces to recovering a planted independent set, we don't expect efficient algorithms for k = o(√n). This problem is a generalization of the planted balanced biclique problem where the bipartite graph induced on S is a complete bipartite graph; [Yevgeny Levanzov, 2018] gave an algorithm for recovering S in this problem when k = Ω(√n). Our main result is an efficient algorithm that recovers (w.h.p.) the planted bipartite graph when k = Ω_p(√{n log n}) for a large range of parameters. Our results also hold for a natural semi-random model of instances, which involve the presence of a monotone adversary. Our proof shows that a natural SDP relaxation for the problem is integral by constructing an appropriate solution to it’s dual formulation. Our main technical contribution is a new approach for construction the dual solution where we calibrate the eigenvectors of the adjacency matrix to be the eigenvectors of the dual matrix. We believe that this approach may have applications to other recovery problems in semi-random models as well. When k = Ω(√n), we give an algorithm for recovering S whose running time is exponential in the number of small eigenvalues in graph induced on S; this algorithm is based on subspace enumeration techniques due to the works of [Alexandra Kolla and Madhur Tulsiani, 2007; Arora et al., 2010; Kolla, 2011].

Statistical Physics Approaches to Unique Games

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 169, 35th Computational Complexity Conference (CCC 2020)

Abstract
We show how two techniques from statistical physics can be adapted to solve a variant of the notorious Unique Games problem, potentially opening new avenues towards the Unique Games Conjecture. The variant, which we call Count Unique Games, is a promise problem in which the "yes" case guarantees a certain number of highly satisfiable assignments to the Unique Games instance. In the standard Unique Games problem, the "yes" case only guarantees at least one such assignment. We exhibit efficient algorithms for Count Unique Games based on approximating a suitable partition function for the Unique Games instance via (i) a zero-free region and polynomial interpolation, and (ii) the cluster expansion. We also show that a modest improvement to the parameters for which we give results would be strong negative evidence for the truth of the Unique Games Conjecture.

Spectral Aspects of Symmetric Matrix Signings

Abstract
The spectra of signed matrices have played a fundamental role in social sciences, graph theory, and control theory. In this work, we investigate the computational problems of finding symmetric signings of matrices with natural spectral properties. Our results are the following: 1) We characterize matrices that have an invertible signing: a symmetric matrix has an invertible symmetric signing if and only if the support graph of the matrix contains a perfect 2-matching. Further, we present an efficient algorithm to search for an invertible symmetric signing. 2) We use the above-mentioned characterization to give an algorithm to find a minimum increase in the support of a given symmetric matrix so that it has an invertible symmetric signing. 3) We show NP-completeness of the following problems: verifying whether a given matrix has a symmetric signing that is singular or has bounded eigenvalues. However, we also illustrate that the complexity could differ substantially for input matrices that are adjacency matrices of graphs. We use combinatorial techniques in addition to classic results from matching theory.
