The Squishy Grid Problem

Abstract
In this paper we consider the problem of approximating Euclidean distances by the infinite integer grid graph. Although the topology of the graph is fixed, we have control over the edge-weight assignment w : E → ℝ_{≥ 0}, and hope to have grid distances be asymptotically isometric to Euclidean distances, that is: For all grid points u,v, dist_w(u,v) = (1± o(1))‖u-v‖₂. We give three methods for solving this problem, each attractive in its own way. - Our first construction is based on an embedding of the recursive, non-periodic pinwheel tiling of Radin and Conway [Charles Radin, 1994; Radin and Sadun, 1996; John H. Conway and Charles Radin, 1998] into the integer grid. Distances in the pinwheel graph are asymptotically isometric to Euclidean distances, but no explicit bound on the rate of convergence was known. We prove that the multiplicative distortion of the pinwheel graph is (1 + 1/Θ(log^ξ log D)), where D is the Euclidean distance and ξ = Θ(1). The pinwheel tiling approach is conceptually simple, but can be improved quantitatively. - Our second construction is based on a hierarchical arrangement of highways. It is simple, achieving stretch (1 + 1/Θ(D^{1/9})), which converges doubly exponentially faster than the pinwheel tiling approach. - The first two methods are deterministic, with rigorous guarantees. An even simpler approach is to sample the edge weights independently and randomly from a common distribution D. Whether there exists a distribution D^* that makes grid distances Euclidean, asymptotically and in expectation, is major open problem in the theory of first passage percolation. Previous experiments show that when D is a Fisher distribution (which is continuous), grid distances are within 1% of Euclidean distances. We demonstrate experimentally that this level of accuracy can be achieved by a simple 2-point distribution that assigns weights 0.41 or 4.75 with probability 44% and 56%, respectively.

New Greedy Spanners and Applications

Abstract
We present a simple greedy procedure to compute an (α,β)-spanner for a graph G. We then show that this procedure is useful for building fault-tolerant spanners, as well as spanners for weighted graphs. Our first main result is an algorithm that, given a multigraph G, outputs an f edge fault-tolerant (k,k-1)-spanner H of size O(fn^{1+1/k}) which is tight. To our knowledge, this is the first tight result concerning the price of fault tolerance in spanners which are not multiplicative, in any model of faults. Our second main result is a new construction of a spanner for weighted graphs. We show that any weighted graph G has a subgraph H with O(n^{1+1/k}) edges such that any path P of hop-length 𝓁 in G has a replacement path P' in H of weighted length ≤ w(P)+(2k-2)w^(1/2)(P) where w(P) is the total edge weight of P, and w^(1/2) denotes the sum of the largest ⌈𝓁/2⌉ edge weights along P. Moreover, we show such approximation is optimal for shortest paths of hop-length 2. To our knowledge, this is the first construction of a "spanner" for weighted graphs that strictly improves upon the stretch of multiplicative (2k-1)-spanners for all non-adjacent vertex pairs, while maintaining the same size bound. Our technique is based on using clustering and ball-growing, which are methods commonly used in designing spanner algorithms, to analyze simple greedy algorithms. This allows us to combine the flexibility of clustering approaches with the unique properties of the greedy algorithm to get improved bounds. In particular, our methods give a very short proof that the parallel greedy spanner adds O(kn^{1+1/k}) edges, improving upon known bounds.

Smoothed Analysis of Dynamic Graph Algorithms

Abstract
Recent years have seen significant progress in the study of dynamic graph algorithms, and most notably, the introduction of strong lower bound techniques for them (e.g., Henzinger, Krinninger, Nanongkai and Saranurak, STOC 2015; Larsen and Yu, FOCS 2023). As worst-case analysis (adversarial inputs) may lead to the necessity of high running times, a natural question arises: in which cases are high running times really necessary, and in which cases these inputs merely manifest unique pathological cases? Early attempts to tackle this question were made by Nikoletseas, Reif, Spirakis and Yung (ICALP 1995) and by Alberts and Henzinger (Algorithmica 1998), who considered models with very little adversarial control over the inputs, and showed fast algorithms exist for them. The question was then overlooked for decades, until Henzinger, Lincoln and Saha (SODA 2022) recently addressed uniformly random inputs, and presented algorithms and impossibility results for several subgraph counting problems. To tackle the above question more thoroughly, we employ smoothed analysis, a celebrated framework introduced by Spielman and Teng (J. ACM, 2004). An input is proposed by an adversary but then a noisy version of it is processed by the algorithm instead. This model of inputs is parameterized by the amount of adversarial control, and fully interpolates between worst-case inputs and a uniformly random input. Doing so, we extend impossibility results for some problems to the smoothed model with only a minor quantitative loss. That is, we show that partially-adversarial inputs suffice to impose high running times for certain problems. In contrast, we show that other problems become easy even with the slightest amount of noise. In addition, we study the interplay between the adversary and the noise, leading to three natural models of smoothed inputs, for which we show a hierarchy of increasing difficulty stretching between the average-case and the worst-case complexities.

Maximum-Flow and Minimum-Cut Sensitivity Oracles for Directed Graphs

Abstract
This paper addresses the problem of designing fault-tolerant data structures for the (s,t)-max-flow and (s,t)-min-cut problems in unweighted directed graphs. Given a directed graph G = (V, E) with a designated source s, sink t, and an (s,t)-max-flow of value λ, we present constructions for max-flow and min-cut sensitivity oracles, and introduce the concept of a fault-tolerant flow family, which may be of independent interest. Our main contributions are as follows. 1) Fault-Tolerant Flow Family: We construct a family ℬ of 2λ+1 (s,t)-flows such that for every edge e, ℬ contains an (s,t)-max-flow of G-e. This covering property is tight up to constants for single failures and provably cannot extend to comparably small families for k ≥ 2, where we show an Ω(n) lower bound on the family size, independent of λ. 2) Max-Flow Sensitivity Oracle: Using the fault-tolerant flow family, we construct a single as well as dual-edge sensitivity oracle for (s,t)-max-flow that requires only O(λ n) space. Given any set F of up to two failing edges, the oracle reports the updated max-flow value in G-F in O(n) time. Additionally, for the single-failure case, the oracle can determine in constant time whether the flow through an edge x changes when another edge e fails. 3) Min-Cut Sensitivity Oracle for Dual Failures: Recently, Baswana et al. (ICALP’22) designed an O(n²)-sized oracle for answering (s,t)-min-cut size queries under dual edge failures in constant time, along with a matching lower bound. We extend this by focusing on graphs with small min-cut values λ, and present a more compact oracle of size O(λ n) that answers such min-cut size queries in constant time and reports the corresponding (s,t)-min-cut partition in O(n) time. We also show that the space complexity of our oracle is asymptotically optimal in this setting. 4) Min-Cut Sensitivity Oracle for Multiple Failures: We extend our results to the general case of k edge failures. For any graph with (s,t)-min-cut of size λ, we construct a k-fault-tolerant min-cut oracle with space complexity O_{λ,k}(n log n) that answers min-cut size queries in O_{λ,k}(log n) time. This also leads to improved fault-tolerant (s,t)-reachability oracles, achieving O(n log n) space and O(log n) query time for up to k = O(1) edge failures.

Perfect Simulation of Las Vegas Algorithms via Local Computation

Abstract
The notion of Las Vegas algorithms was introduced by Babai (1979) and can be defined in two ways: - In Babai’s original definition, a randomized algorithm is called Las Vegas if it has a finitely bounded running time and certifiable random failure. - Another definition widely accepted today is that Las Vegas algorithms refer to zero-error randomized algorithms with random running times. The equivalence between the two definitions is straightforward. Specifically, for randomized algorithms with certifiable failures, repeatedly running the algorithm until no failure is encountered allows for faithful simulation of the correct output when it executes successfully. We show that a similar perfect simulation can also be achieved in distributed local computation. Specifically, in the LOCAL model, with a polylogarithmic overhead in time complexity, any Las Vegas algorithm with finitely bounded running time and locally certifiable failures can be converted to a zero error Las Vegas algorithm. This transformed algorithm faithfully reproduces the correct output of the original algorithm in successful executions. This is achieved by a reduction to a distributed sampling problem under the Lovász Local Lemma (LLL), where the objective is to sample from the joint distribution of random variables avoiding all bad events. We then design the first efficient algorithm to solve this sampling problem in the LOCAL model.

Uniformity Testing Under User-Level Local Privacy

Abstract
We initiate the study of distribution testing under user-level local differential privacy, where each of n users contributes m samples from the unknown underlying distribution. This setting, albeit very natural, is significantly more challenging than the usual locally private setting, as for the same parameter ε the privacy guarantee must now apply to a full batch of m data points. While some recent work considers distribution learning in this user-level setting, nothing was known for even the most fundamental testing task, uniformity testing (and its generalization, identity testing). We address this gap, by providing (nearly) sample-optimal user-level LDP algorithms for uniformity and identity testing. Motivated by practical considerations, our main focus is on the private-coin, symmetric setting, which does not require users to share a common random seed nor to have been assigned a globally unique identifier.

Time-Optimal and Energy-Efficient Deterministic Consensus

Abstract
We study fault-tolerant consensus in a variant of the synchronous message passing model, where, in each round, every node can choose to be awake or asleep. This is known as the sleeping model (Chatterjee, Gmyr, Pandurangan PODC 2020) and defines the awake complexity (also called energy complexity), which measures the maximum number of rounds that any node is awake throughout the execution. Only awake nodes can send and receive messages in a given round and all messages sent to sleeping nodes are lost. We present new deterministic consensus algorithms that tolerate up to f < n crash failures, where n is the number of nodes. Our algorithms match the optimal time complexity lower bound of f+1 rounds. For multi-value consensus, where the input values are chosen from some possibly large set, we achieve an energy complexity of 𝒪(⌈ f² / n ⌉) rounds, whereas for binary consensus, we show an algorithm to achieve 𝒪(⌈ f / √n ⌉) energy complexity.

On the Complexity of Distributed Edge Coloring and Orientation Problems

Abstract
Understanding the role of randomness when solving locally checkable labeling (LCL) problems in the LOCAL model has been one of the top priorities in the research on distributed graph algorithms in recent years. For LCL problems in bounded-degree graphs, it is known that randomness cannot help more than polynomially, except in one case: if the deterministic complexity of an LCL problem is in Ω(log n) and its randomized complexity is in o(log n), then the randomized complexity is guaranteed to be O(poly(log log n)) and it is even known to be O(log log n) in bounded-degree trees. However, the fundamental question of which problems with a deterministic complexity of Ω(log n) can be solved exponentially faster using randomization still remains wide open. We make a step towards answering this question by studying a simple, but natural class of LCL problems: so-called degree splitting problems. These problems come in two varieties: coloring problems where the edges of a graph have to be colored with 2 colors and orientation problems where each edge needs to be oriented. For an exact classification, it is most natural to consider the Δ-regular case (for Δ = O(1)), where we obtain the following results. - We exactly characterize the complexity of problems where the edges need to be colored with two colors, say red and blue. We show that for every y ∈ {0,… ,Δ-1}, the problem of red-blue coloring the edges such that every node of degree Δ has either y or y+1 red edges has randomized complexity O(log log n) in general graphs of maximum degree Δ. Any other problem, i.e., any problem that does not allow two consecutive red degrees, is already known to have randomized complexity Ω(log n) even in Δ-regular trees. We note that a set of edges F such that every node has either y or y+1 incident edges in F is also known as a {y,y+1}-factor of a graph. - For edge orientations, we show that for any two r₁ and r₂ such that r₁,r₂ ≤ Δ/2 and r₁+r₂ ≥ Δ/2, there are randomized algorithms with round complexities O(log log n) in trees and Õ(log⁴log n) in general graphs to compute an edge orientation such that all nodes have outdegree r₁ ± O(√{ΔlogΔ}) or Δ-r₂ ± O(√{ΔlogΔ}). Further, there exists a constant c > 0 such that for any 0 ≤ r₁+r₂ ≤ Δ/2, the problem of computing an edge orientation in which all outdegrees are either at most r₁-c⋅ √{Δ} or at least Δ-r₂+c⋅√{Δ} has randomized complexity Ω(log n) even in Δ-regular trees. While our results are cleanest to state for the Δ-regular case, all our algorithms naturally generalize to nodes of any degree d < Δ in general graphs of maximum degree Δ. All our algorithms also naturally generalize to the unbounded degree case and they then have a randomized complexity of Õ(Δ) ⋅ log log n (resp. Õ(Δ ⋅log⁴log n) for orienting general graphs).

Distributed (Δ+1)-Coloring in Graphs of Bounded Neighborhood Independence

Abstract
The distributed coloring problem is arguably one of the key problems studied in the area of distributed graph algorithms. The most standard variant of the problem asks for a proper vertex coloring of a graph with Δ+1 colors, where Δ is the maximum degree of the graph. Despite an immense amount of work on distributed coloring problems in the distributed setting, determining the deterministic complexity of (Δ+1)-coloring in the standard message passing model remains one of the most important open questions of the area. In the LOCAL model, it is known that (Δ+1)-coloring requires Ω(log^* n) rounds even in paths and rings (i.e., when Δ = 2). For general graphs, the problem is known to be solvable in Õ(log^{5/3}n) rounds and in O(√{ΔlogΔ} + log^* n) rounds when expressing the complexity as a function of Δ and with an optimal dependency on n. In the present paper, we aim to improve our understanding of the deterministic complexity of (Δ+1)-coloring as a function of Δ in a special family of graphs for which significantly faster algorithms are already known. The neighborhood independence θ of a graph is the maximum number of pairwise non-adjacent neighbors of some node of the graph. Notable examples of graphs of bounded neighborhood independence are line graphs of graphs and bounded-rank hypergraphs. It is known that the (2Δ-1)-edge coloring problem and therefore the (Δ+1)-coloring problem in line graphs of graphs can be solved in O(log^{12}Δ+log^* n) rounds. In general, in graphs of neighborhood independence θ = O(1), it is known that (Δ+1)-coloring can be solved in 2^{O(√{logΔ})}+O(log^* n) rounds. In the present paper, we significantly improve the latter result, and we show that in graphs of neighborhood independence θ, a (Δ+1)-coloring can be computed in (θ⋅logΔ)^{O(log logΔ / log log logΔ)}+O(log^* n) rounds and thus in quasipolylogarithmic time in Δ as long as θ is at most polylogarithmic in Δ. Our algorithm can be seen as a generalization of an existing similar, but slightly weaker result for (2Δ-1)-edge coloring. We also show that the approach that leads to this polylogarithmic in Δ algorithm for (2Δ-1)-edge coloring already fails for edge colorings of hypergraphs of rank at least 3. At the core of the fast edge coloring algorithm is an algorithm to divide the edges of a graph into two parts so that up to a multiplicative error of 1+o(1), the maximum degree of the line graph induced by each part is at most half the maximum degree of the original line graph. We show that computing such a bipartition of the edges of the line graph of a hypergraph of rank at least 3 requires time logarithmic in n.

Star-Based Separators for Intersection Graphs of c-Colored Pseudo-Segments

Abstract
The Planar Separator Theorem, which states that any planar graph 𝒢 has a separator consisting of O(√n) nodes whose removal partitions 𝒢 into components of size at most 2n/3, is a widely used tool to obtain fast algorithms on planar graphs. Intersection graphs of disks, which generalize planar graphs, do not admit such separators. It has recently been shown that disk graphs do admit so-called clique-based separators that consist of O(√n) cliques. This result has been generalized to intersection graphs of various other types of disk-like objects. Unfortunately, segment intersection graphs do not admit small clique-based separators, because they can contain arbitrarily large bicliques. This is true even in the simple case of axis-aligned segments. In this paper we therefore introduce biclique-based separators (and, in particular, star-based separators), which are separators consisting of a small number of bicliques (or stars). We prove that any c-oriented set of n segments in the plane, where c is a constant, admits a star-based separator consisting of O(√n) stars. In fact, our result is more general, as it applies to any set of n pseudo-segments that is partitioned into c subsets such that the pseudo-segments in the same subset are pairwise disjoint. We extend our result to intersection graphs of c-oriented polygons. These results immediately lead to an almost-exact distance oracle for such intersection graphs, which has O(n√n) storage and O(√n) query time, and that can report the hop-distance between any two query nodes in the intersection graph with an additive error of at most 2. This is the first distance oracle for such types of intersection graphs that has subquadratic storage and sublinear query time and that only has an additive error.

New Approximate Distance Oracles and Their Applications

Abstract
Let G = (V, E) be an undirected graph with n vertices and m edges, and let μ = m/n. A distance oracle is a data structure designed to answer approximate distance queries, with the goal of achieving low stretch, efficient space usage, and fast query time. While much of the prior work focused on distance oracles with constant query time, this paper presents a comprehensive study of distance oracles with non-constant query time. We explore the tradeoffs between space, stretch, and query time of distance oracles in various regimes. Specifically, we consider both weighted and unweighted graphs in the regimes of stretch < 2 and stretch ≥ 2. In addition, we demonstrate several applications of our new distance oracles to the n-Pairs Shortest Paths (n-PSP) problem and the All Nodes Shortest Cycles (ANSC) problem. Our main contributions are: - Weighted graphs: We present a new three-way trade-off between stretch, space, and query time, offering a natural extension of the classical Thorup–Zwick distance oracle [STOC’01 and JACM’05] to regimes with larger query time. Specifically, for any 0 < r < 1/2 and integer k ≥ 1, we construct a (2k(1 - 2r) - 1)-stretch distance oracle with Õ(m + n^{1 + 1/k}) space and Õ(μ n^r) query time. This construction provides an asymptotic improvement over the classical (2k - 1)-stretch and O(n^{1 + 1/k})-space tradeoff of Thorup and Zwick in sparse graphs, at the cost of increased query time. We also improve upon a result of Dalirrooyfard et al. [FOCS’22], who presented a (2k - 2)-stretch distance oracle with O(m + n^{1 + 1/k}) space and O(μ n^{1/k}) query time. In our oracle we reduce the stretch from (2k - 2) to (2k - 5) while preserving the same space and query time. - Unweighted graphs: We present a (2k - 5, 4 + 2_{odd})-approximation distance oracle with O(n^{1 + 1/k}) space and O(n^{1/k}) query time. This improves upon a (2k - 2, 2_{odd})-approximation distance oracle of Dalirrooyfard et al. [FOCS’22] while maintaining the same space and query time. We also present a distance oracle that given u,v ∈ V returns an estimate d̂(u,v) ≤ d(u,v) + 2⌈ d(u,v) / 3 ⌉ + 2, using O(n^{4/3 + 2ε}) space and O(n^{1 - 3ε}) query time. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first distance oracle that simultaneously achieves a multiplicative stretch < 2, and a space complexity O(n^{1.5 - α}), for some α > 0. - Applications for n-PSP and ANSC: We present an Õ(m^{1 - 1/(k+1)} n)-time algorithm for the n-PSP problem, that for every input pair ⟨s_i,t_i⟩, where i ∈ [n], returns an estimate d̂(s_i, t_i) such that d̂(s_i,t_i) ≤ d(s_i,t_i) + 2⌈d(s_i,t_i)/2k⌉. By allowing a small additive error, this result circumvents the conditional running time lower bound of Ω(m^{2 - 2/(k+1)} ⋅ n^{1/(k+1) - o(1)}), established by Dalirrooyfard et al. [FOCS’22] for achieving (1 + 1/k)-stretch. Additionally, we present an Õ(mn^{1 - 1/k})-time algorithm for the ANSC problem that computes, for every u ∈ V, an estimate ĉ_u such that ĉ_u ≤ SC(u) + 2⌈SC(u)/2(k - 1)⌉, where SC(u) denotes the length of the shortest cycle containing u. This improves upon the Õ(m^{2 - 2/k}n^{1/k})-time algorithm of Dalirrooyfard et al. [FOCS'22], while achieving the same approximation guarantee. We obtain our results by developing several new techniques, among them are the borderline vertices technique and the middle vertex technique, which may be of independent interest.

Distributed Complexity of P_k-Freeness: Decision and Certification

Abstract
The class of graphs that do not contain a path on k nodes as an induced subgraph (P_k-free graphs) has rich applications in the theory of graph algorithms. This paper explores the problem of deciding P_k-freeness from the viewpoint of distributed computing. For specific small values of k, we present the first CONGEST algorithms specified for P_k-freeness, utilizing structural properties of P_k-free graphs in a novel way. Specifically, we show that P_k-freeness can be decided in Õ(1) rounds for k = 4 in the broadcast CONGEST model, and in Õ(n) rounds for k = 5 in the CONGEST model, where n is the number of nodes in the network and Õ(⋅) hides a polylog(n) factor. The main technical contribution is a novel technique used in our algorithm for P₅-freeness to distinguish induced 5-paths from non-induced ones, which is potentially applicable to other induced subgraphs. This technique also enables the construction of a local certification of P₅-freeness with certificates of size Õ(n). This improves Õ(n^{3/2}) by Bousquet and Zeitoun (TCS 2025), and is nearly optimal, given our Ω(n^{1-o(1)}) lower bound on certificate size. For general k, we establish the first CONGEST lower bound, which is of the form n^{2-1/Θ(k)}. The n^{1/Θ(k)} factor is unavoidable, in view of the O(n^{2-2/(3k+2)}) upper bound by Eden et al. (Dist. Comp. 2022). Additionally, our approach yields the first superlinear lower bound on certificate size for local certification. This partially answers the conjecture on the optimal certificate size of P_k-freeness, asked by Bousquet et al. (arXiv:2402.12148). Finally, we propose a novel variant of the problem called ordered P_k detection. We show that in the CONGEST model, the round complexity of ordered P_k detection is Ω̃(n) for k ≥ 5, and in contrast, proving any nontrivial lower bound for ordered P₃ detection implies a strong circuit lower bound. As a byproduct, we establish a circuit-complexity barrier for Ω(n^{1/2+ε}) quantum CONGEST lower bounds for induced 4-cycle detection. This is complemented by our Õ(n^{3/4}) quantum upper bound, which surpasses the classical Ω̃(n) lower bound by Le Gall and Miyamoto (ISAAC 2021).

On the Randomized Locality of Matching Problems in Regular Graphs

Abstract
The main goal in distributed symmetry-breaking is to understand the locality of problems: the radius of the neighborhood that a node must explore to determine its part of a global solution. In this work, we study the locality of matching problems in the family of regular graphs, which is one of the main benchmarks for establishing lower bounds on the locality of symmetry-breaking problems, as well as for obtaining classification results. Our main results are summarized as follows: 1) Approximate matching: We develop randomized algorithms to show that (1 + ε)-approximate matching in regular graphs is truly local, i.e., the locality depends only on ε and is independent of all other graph parameters. Furthermore, as long as the degree Δ is not very small (namely, as long as Δ ≥ poly(1/ε)), this dependence is only logarithmic in 1/ε. This stands in sharp contrast to maximal matching in regular graphs which requires some dependence on the number of nodes n or the degree Δ. 2) Maximal matching: Our techniques further allow us to establish a strong separation between the node-averaged complexity and worst-case complexity of maximal matching in regular graphs, by showing that the former is only O(1). Central to our main technical contribution is a novel martingale-based analysis for the ≈ 40-year-old algorithm by Luby. In particular, our analysis shows that applying one round of Luby’s algorithm on the line graph of a Δ-regular graph results in an almost Δ/2-regular graph.

Towards Optimal Distributed Edge Coloring with Fewer Colors

Abstract
There is a huge difference in techniques and runtimes of distributed algorithms for problems that can be solved by a sequential greedy algorithm and those that cannot. A prime example of this contrast appears in the edge coloring problem: while (2Δ-1)-edge coloring - where Δ is the maximum degree - can be solved in 𝒪(log^{∗}(n)) rounds on constant-degree graphs, the seemingly minor reduction to (2Δ-2) colors leads to an Ω(log n) lower bound [Chang, He, Li, Pettie & Uitto, SODA'18]. Understanding this sharp divide between very local problems and inherently more global ones remains a central open question in distributed computing and it is a core focus of this paper. As our main contribution we design a deterministic distributed 𝒪(log n)-round reduction from the (2Δ-2)-edge coloring problem to the much easier (2Δ-1)-edge coloring problem. This reduction is optimal, as the (2Δ-2)-edge coloring problem admits an Ω(log n) lower bound that even holds on the class of constant-degree graphs, whereas the 2Δ-1-edge coloring problem can be solved in 𝒪(log^{∗}n) rounds. By plugging in the (2Δ-1)-edge coloring algorithms from [Balliu, Brandt, Kuhn & Olivetti, PODC'22] running in 𝒪(log^{12}Δ + log^{∗} n) rounds, we obtain an optimal runtime of 𝒪(log n) rounds as long as Δ = 2^{𝒪(log^{1/12} n)}. Previously, such an optimal algorithm was only known for the class of constant-degree graphs [Brandt, Maus, Narayanan, Schager & Uitto, SODA'25]. Furthermore, on general graphs our reduction improves the runtime from 𝒪̃(log³ n) to 𝒪̃(log^{5/3} n). In addition, we also obtain an optimal 𝒪(log log n)-round randomized reduction of (2Δ - 2)-edge coloring to (2Δ - 1)-edge coloring. This leads to a 𝒪̃(log^{5/3} log n)-round (2Δ-2)-edge coloring algorithm, which beats the (very recent) previous state-of-the-art taking 𝒪̃(log^{8/3}log n) rounds from [Bourreau, Brandt & Nolin, STOC'25]. Lastly, we obtain an 𝒪(log_Δ n)-round reduction from the (2Δ-1)-edge coloring, albeit to the somewhat harder maximal independent set (MIS) problem.

The Complexity Landscape of Dynamic Distributed Subgraph Finding

Abstract
Bonne and Censor-Hillel (ICALP 2019) initiated the study of distributed subgraph finding in dynamic networks of limited bandwidth. For the case where the target subgraph is a clique, they determined the tight bandwidth complexity bounds in nearly all settings. However, several open questions remain, and very little is known about finding subgraphs beyond cliques. In this work, we consider these questions and explore subgraphs beyond cliques in the deterministic setting. For finding cliques, we establish an Ω(log log n) bandwidth lower bound for one-round membership-detection under edge insertions only and an Ω(log log log n) bandwidth lower bound for one-round detection under both edge insertions and node insertions. Moreover, we demonstrate new algorithms to show that our lower bounds are tight in bounded-degree networks when the target subgraph is a triangle. Prior to our work, no lower bounds were known for these problems. For finding subgraphs beyond cliques, we present a complete characterization of the bandwidth complexity of the membership-listing problem for every target subgraph, every number of rounds, and every type of topological change: node insertions, node deletions, edge insertions, and edge deletions. We also show partial characterizations for one-round membership-detection and listing.
