On the Computational Cost of Knowledge Graph Embeddings

Abstract
Over a decade, numerous Knowledge Graph Embedding (KGE) models have been designed and evaluated on reference datasets, always with increasing performance. In this paper, we re-evaluate these models with respect to their computational efficiency during training, by estimating the computational cost of the procedure expressed in floating-point operations. We design a cost model based on analytical expressions and apply it on a collection of 20 KGE models, representative of the state-of-the-art. We show that dimensionality or parameter efficiency, used in the literature to compare models with each other, are not suitable to evaluate the true cost of models. Through fixed-budget experiments, a novel approach to evaluate KGE models based on cost estimates, we re-assess the relative performance of model families compared to the state-of-the-art. Bilinear models such as ComplEx underperform with a low computational budget while hyperbolic linear models appear to offer no particular benefit compared to simpler Euclidian models, especially the MuRE model. Neural models, such as ConvE or CompGCN, achieve reasonable performance in the literature but their high computational cost appears unnecessary when compared with other models. The trade-off between efficiency and expressivity of both linear and neural models is to be further explored.

A Logic Programming Approach to Repairing SHACL Constraint Violations

Abstract
The Shapes Constraint Language (SHACL) is a recent standard, a W3C recommendation, for validating RDF graphs against shape constraints to be checked on target nodes of a data graph. The standard also describes the notion of validation reports, which detail the results of the validation process. In case of violation of constraints, the validation report should explain the reasons for non-validation, offering guidance on how to identify or fix violations in the data graph. Since the specification left it open to SHACL processors to define such explanations, a recent work proposed the use of explanations in the style of database repairs, where a repair is a set of additions to or deletions from the data graph so that the resulting graph validates against the constraints. In this paper, we study such repairs for non-recursive SHACL, the largest fragment of SHACL that is fully defined in the specification. We propose an algorithm to compute repairs by encoding the explanation problem - using Answer Set Programming (ASP) - into a logic program, where the answer sets contain (minimal) repairs. We then study a scenario where it is not possible to simultaneously repair all the targets, which may be the case due to overall unsatisfiability or conflicting constraints. We introduce a relaxed notion of validation, which allows to validate a (maximal) subset of the targets and adapt the ASP translation to take into account this relaxation. Finally, we add support for repairing constraints which use property paths and equality of paths. Our implementation in clingo is - to the best of our knowledge - the first implementation of a repair program for SHACL.

Rule-Based Knowledge Graph Completion (Invited Paper)

Abstract
The field of knowledge graph completion is concerned with augmenting knowledge graphs with missing information. Symbolic rule-based approaches are not only efficient and interpretable but also competitive with embedding-based methods in regard to predictive quality. Rule-based knowledge graph completion can be separated into two stages, the learning stage and the application stage, which are both individually challenging. In the learning stage, horn rules are mined from a given knowledge graph. Given the vast size of the space of all possible rules, the mining approach must select relevant rules effectively. In the application stage, the mined rules are used to make new predictions which are assigned with plausibility scores. These scores need to be set by aggregating individual confidence values of rules that have the same consequence. This tutorial covers the fundamental aspects required to build a symbolic rule-based approach for knowledge graph completion. It will discuss the different rule types, mining strategies, and how to effectively apply the rules in different scenarios. Finally, we discuss practical examples for rule application by using the Python-based PyClause library.

Same Quality Metrics, Different Graph Drawings

Abstract
Graph drawings are commonly used to visualize relational data. User understanding and performance are linked to the quality of such drawings, which is measured by quality metrics. The tacit knowledge in the graph drawing community about these quality metrics is that they are not always able to accurately capture the quality of graph drawings. In particular, such metrics may rate drawings with very poor quality as very good. In this work we make this tacit knowledge explicit by showing that we can modify existing graph drawings into arbitrary target shapes while keeping one or more quality metrics almost identical. This supports the claim that more advanced quality metrics are needed to capture the "goodness" of a graph drawing and that we cannot confidently rely on the value of a single (or several) certain quality metrics.

Beyond Static Diagnosis: A Temporal ASP Framework for HVAC Fault Detection

Abstract
Improving sustainability in the building sector requires more efficient operation of energy-intensive systems such as Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC). We present a novel diagnostic framework for HVAC systems that integrates Answer Set Programming (ASP) with Functional Event Calculus (FEC). Our approach exploits the declarative nature of ASP for modeling and incorporates FEC to capture temporal system dynamics. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach through a case study on a real-world heating system, where we model key components and system constraints. Our evaluation on nominal and faulty traces shows that exploiting ASP in combination with FEC can identify plausible diagnoses. Moreover, we explore the difference between static and rolling-window strategies and provide insights into runtime versus soundness on those variants. Our work provides a step toward the practical application of ASP-based temporal reasoning in building diagnostics.

Classical Algorithms for Constant Approximation of the Ground State Energy of Local Hamiltonians

Abstract
We construct classical algorithms computing an approximation of the ground state energy of an arbitrary k-local Hamiltonian acting on n qubits. We first consider the setting where a good "guiding state" is available, which is the main setting where quantum algorithms are expected to achieve an exponential speedup over classical methods. We show that a constant approximation (i.e., an approximation with constant relative accuracy) of the ground state energy can be computed classically in poly (1/χ,n) time and poly(n) space, where χ denotes the overlap between the guiding state and the ground state (as in prior works in dequantization, we assume sample-and-query access to the guiding state). This gives a significant improvement over the recent classical algorithm by Gharibian and Le Gall (SICOMP 2023), and matches (up to a polynomial overhead) both the time and space complexities of quantum algorithms for constant approximation of the ground state energy. We also obtain classical algorithms for higher-precision approximation. For the setting where no guided state is given (i.e., the standard version of the local Hamiltonian problem), we obtain a classical algorithm computing a constant approximation of the ground state energy in 2^O(n) time and poly(n) space. To our knowledge, before this work it was unknown how to classically achieve these bounds simultaneously, even for constant approximation. We also discuss complexity-theoretic aspects of our results.

On Estimating the Quantum 𝓁_α Distance

Abstract
We study the computational complexity of estimating the quantum 𝓁_α distance T_α(ρ₀,ρ₁), defined via the Schatten α-norm ‖A‖_α := tr(|A|^α)^{1/α}, given poly(n)-size state-preparation circuits of n-qubit quantum states ρ₀ and ρ₁. This quantity serves as a lower bound on the trace distance for α > 1. For any constant α > 1, we develop an efficient rank-independent quantum estimator for T_α(ρ₀,ρ₁) with time complexity poly(n), achieving an exponential speedup over the prior best results of exp(n) due to Wang, Guan, Liu, Zhang, and Ying (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 2024). Our improvement leverages efficiently computable uniform polynomial approximations of signed positive power functions within quantum singular value transformation, thereby eliminating the dependence on the rank of the states. Our quantum algorithm reveals a dichotomy in the computational complexity of the Quantum State Distinguishability Problem with Schatten α-norm (QSD_α), which involves deciding whether T_α(ρ₀,ρ₁) is at least 2/5 or at most 1/5. This dichotomy arises between the cases of constant α > 1 and α = 1: - For any 1+Ω(1) ≤ α ≤ O(1), QSD_α is BQP-complete. - For any 1 ≤ α ≤ 1+1/n, QSD_α is QSZK-complete, implying that no efficient quantum estimator for T_α(ρ₀,ρ₁) exists unless BQP = QSZK. The hardness results follow from reductions based on new rank-dependent inequalities for the quantum 𝓁_α distance with 1 ≤ α ≤ ∞, which are of independent interest.

Unbound Human-Machine Interfaces for Interaction in Weightless Environments

Abstract
User interfaces are subject to the rules of physics (e.g., Newton and Archimedes' laws) relevant to the environment they are in. As such, most interfaces and interaction techniques have been designed for Earth surface. However, when interacting with technology in weightless environments, such as in space, both human and machine will be subject to different physical constraints. For instance, underwater or in Space, people can experience spatial disorientation, which will in turn affect how they use a system. This position paper conceptualizes unbound Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) as interfaces where either, or both, human and machine are located beyond Earth surface. In particular, it describes how traditional HCI needs to be rethought for interaction in weightless environments and how theoretical models such as joint cognition can support future developments of unbound interfaces.

Design as an Astronaut: An XR/VR Experience of the Argonaut Habitat Unit

Abstract
This research explores the conceptual design of a lunar habitat integrated with the Argonaut lander, an autonomous lunar landing vehicle currently under development by an international consortium led by the European Space Agency (ESA). As Europe’s first lunar lander, Argonaut was conceived to provide ESA and relevant European stakeholders with independent access to the Moon. Although the lander is primarily designed to transport various types of cargo to the lunar surface, this study proposes its adaptation as a platform for future human habitation: the Argonaut Habitat Unit. The project is the result of an international collaboration between ESA, the MIT Media Lab, and Politecnico di Milano. Drawing on a wide range of methodological approaches, this paper reflects on key aspects of the concept, including its synergy with the existing Argonaut project, algorithmic modeling of a lunar habitat, consideration of technical requirements, and interior design development. The project addresses the spatial, material, and environmental constraints of lunar habitation through a combination of three-dimensional modeling software, computational design tools, and virtual reality (VR) development environments. The integration of VR offers an immersive understanding of the proposed habitat, enabling a first-hand experience of its spatial qualities. This approach supports both the evaluation and refinement of the design, enhancing its livability and practical feasibility.

Monitoring the Structural Health of Space Habitats Through Immersive Data Art Visualization

Abstract
As humanity advances toward long-term space habitation, traditional SHM systems - reliant on abstract data representations - struggle to support rapid decision-making in extreme environments. This study addresses this critical gap by introducing an engineering-art-human factors framework that transforms SHM through immersive data-art visualization. By integrating sensor networks and machine learning, structural data (stress, vibration, deformation) is converted into intuitive visual languages: dynamic color gradients and biomimetic morphologies leverage perceptual laws (e.g., Weber-Fechner) to amplify critical signals. Multimodal interfaces (AR, haptic feedback) and natural elements mitigate cognitive load and psychological stress in confined habitats. Our contribution lies in redefining SHM as a synergy of precision and intuition, enabling "at-a-glance" assessments while balancing functionality and human-centric design. The urgency of this research stems from the inadequacy of conventional systems in extreme space conditions and the growing demand for astronaut safety and operational efficiency. This framework not only pioneers a sustainable monitoring paradigm for space habitats but also extends to terrestrial high-risk infrastructure, demonstrating the necessity of interdisciplinary innovation in extreme environments.

Temporal Graph Realization with Bounded Stretch

Abstract
A periodic temporal graph, in its simplest form, is a graph in which every edge appears exactly once in the first Δ time steps, and then it reappears recurrently every Δ time steps, where Δ is a given period length. This model offers a natural abstraction of transportation networks where each transportation link connects two destinations periodically. From a network design perspective, a crucial task is to assign the time-labels on the edges in a way that optimizes some criterion. In this paper we introduce a very natural optimality criterion that captures how the temporal distances of all vertex pairs are "stretched", compared to their physical distances, i.e. their distances in the underlying static (non-temporal) graph. Given a static graph G, the task is to assign to each edge one time-label between 1 and Δ such that, in the resulting periodic temporal graph with period Δ, the duration of the fastest temporal path from any vertex u to any other vertex v is at most α times the distance between u and v in G. Here, the value of α measures how much the shortest paths are allowed to be stretched once we assign the periodic time-labels. Our results span three different directions: First, we provide a series of approximation and NP-hardness results. Second, we provide approximation and fixed-parameter algorithms. Among them, we provide a simple polynomial-time algorithm (the radius-algorithm) which always guarantees an approximation strictly smaller than Δ, and which also computes the optimum stretch in some cases. Third, we consider a parameterized local search extension of the problem where we are given the temporal labeling of the graph, but we are allowed to change the time-labels of at most k edges; for this problem we prove that it is W[2]-hard but admits an XP algorithm with respect to k.

Quantum Relaxations of CSP and Structure Isomorphism

Abstract
We investigate quantum relaxations of two key decision problems in computer science: the constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) and the structure isomorphism problem. CSP asks whether a homomorphism exists between two relational structures, while structure isomorphism seeks an isomorphism between them. In recent years, it has become increasingly apparent that many special cases of CSP can be reformulated in terms of the existence of perfect classical strategies in non-local games, a key topic of study in quantum information theory. These games have allowed us to study quantum advantage in relation to many important decision problems, such as the k-colouring problem, and the problem of solving binary constraint systems. Abramsky et al. (2017) have shown that all of these games can be seen as special instances of a non-local CSP game. Moreover, they show that perfect quantum strategies in this CSP game can be viewed as Kleisli morphisms of a graded monad on the category of relational structures, which they dub the quantum monad. In this way, the quantum monad provides a categorical characterisation of quantum advantage for the non-local CSP game. In this work we solidify and expand the results of Abramsky et al., answering several of their open questions. Firstly, we compare the definition of quantum graph homomorphisms arising from this work with an earlier definition of the concept due to Mančinska and Roberson and show that there are graphs which exhibit quantum advantage under one definition but not the other. Our second contribution is to extend the results of Abramsky et al. which only hold in the tensor product framework of quantum mechanics to the commuting operator framework. Next, we study a non-local structure isomorphism game, which generalises the well-studied graph isomorphism game. We show how the construction of the quantum monad can be refined to provide categorical semantics for quantum strategies in this game. This results in a category where morphisms coincide with quantum homomorphisms and isomorphisms coincide with quantum isomorphisms.

Omega-Regular Verification and Control for Distributional Specifications in MDPs

Abstract
A classical approach to studying Markov decision processes (MDPs) is to view them as state transformers. However, MDPs can also be viewed as distribution transformers, where an MDP under a strategy generates a sequence of probability distributions over MDP states. This view arises in several applications, even as the probabilistic model checking problem becomes much harder compared to the classical state transformer counterpart. It is known that even distributional reachability and safety problems become computationally intractable (Skolem- and positivity-hard). To address this challenge, recent works focused on sound but possibly incomplete methods for verification and control of MDPs under the distributional view. However, existing automated methods are applicable only to distributional reachability, safety and reach-avoidance specifications. In this work, we present the first automated method for verification and control of MDPs with respect to distributional omega-regular specifications. To achieve this, we propose a novel notion of distributional certificates, which are sound and complete proof rules for proving that an MDP under a distributionally memoryless strategy satisfies some distributional omega-regular specification. We then use our distributional certificates to design the first fully automated algorithms for verification and control of MDPs with respect to distributional omega-regular specifications. Our algorithms follow a template-based synthesis approach and provide soundness and relative completeness guarantees, while running in PSPACE. Our prototype implementation demonstrates practical applicability of our algorithms to challenging examples collected from the literature.

An Efficient Data Structure and Algorithm for Long-Match Query in Run-Length Compressed BWT

Abstract
String matching problems in bioinformatics are typically for finding exact substring matches between a query and a reference text. Previous formulations often focus on maximum exact matches (MEMs). However, multiple occurrences of substrings of the query in the text that are long enough but not maximal may not be captured by MEMs. Such long matches can be informative, especially when the text is a collection of similar sequences such as genomes. In this paper, we describe a new type of match between a pattern and a text that aren't necessarily maximal in the query, but still contain useful matching information: locally maximal exact matches (LEMs). There are usually a large amount of LEMs, so we only consider those above some length threshold ℒ. These are referred to as long LEMs. The purpose of long LEMs is to capture substring matches between a query and a text that are not necessarily maximal in the pattern but still long enough to be important. Therefore efficient long LEMs finding algorithms are desired for these datasets. However, these datasets are too large to query on traditional string indexes. Fortunately, these datasets are very repetitive. Recently, compressed string indexes that take advantage of the redundancy in the data but retain efficient querying capability have been proposed as a solution. We therefore give an efficient algorithm for computing all the long LEMs of a query and a text in a BWT runs compressed string index. We describe an O(m+occ) expected time algorithm that relies on an O(r) words space string index for outputting all long LEMs of a pattern with respect to a text given the matching statistics of the pattern with respect to the text. Here m is the length of the query, occ is the number of long LEMs outputted, and r is the number of runs in the BWT of the text. The O(r) space string index we describe relies on an adaptation of the move data structure by Nishimoto and Tabei. We are able to support LCP[i] queries in constant time given SA[i]. In other words, we answer PLCP[i] queries in constant time. These PLCP queries enable the efficient long LEM query. Long LEMs may provide useful similarity information between a pattern and a text that MEMs may ignore. This information is particularly useful in pangenome and biobank scale haplotype panel contexts.

Guiding Geospatial Analysis Processes in Dealing with Modifiable Areal Unit Problems

Abstract
Geospatial analysis has been widely applied in different domains for critical decision making. However, the results of spatial analysis are often plagued with uncertainties due to measurement errors, choice of data representations, and unintended transformation artifacts. A well known example of such problems is the Modifiable Areal Unit Problem (MAUP) which has well documented effects on the outcome of spatial analysis on area-aggregated data. Existing methods for addressing the effects of MAUP are limited, are technically complex, and are often inaccessible to practitioners. As a result, analysts tend to ignore the effects of MAUP in practice due to lack of expertise, high cognitive loads, and resource limitations. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a machine-guidance approach to augment the analyst’s capacity in mitigating the effect of MAUP. Based on an analysis of practical challenges faced by human analysts, we identified multiple opportunities for the machine to guide the analysts by alerting to the rise of MAUP, assessing the impact of MAUP, choosing mitigation methods, and generating visual guidance messages using GIS functions and tools. For each of the opportunities, we characterize the behavior patterns and the underlying guidance strategies that generate the behavior. We illustrate the behavior of machine guidance using a hotspot analysis scenario in the context of crime policing, where MAUP has strong effects on the patterns of crime hotspots. Finally, we describe the computational framework used to build a prototype guidance system and identify a number of research questions to be addressed. We conclude by discussing how the machine guidance approach could be an answer to some of the toughest problems in geospatial analysis.
