Beyond 2-Edge-Connectivity: Algorithms and Impossibility for Content-Oblivious Leader Election

Abstract
The content-oblivious model, introduced by Censor-Hillel, Cohen, Gelles, and Sela (PODC 2022; Distributed Computing 2023), captures an extremely weak form of communication where nodes can only send asynchronous, content-less pulses. They showed that in 2-edge-connected networks, any distributed algorithm can be simulated in the content-oblivious model, provided that a unique leader is designated a priori. Subsequent works of Frei, Gelles, Ghazy, and Nolin (DISC 2024) and Chalopin et al. (DISC 2025) developed content-oblivious leader election algorithms, first for unoriented rings and then for general 2-edge-connected graphs. These results establish that all graph problems are solvable in content-oblivious, 2-edge-connected networks. Much less is known about networks that are not 2-edge-connected. Censor-Hillel, Cohen, Gelles, and Sela showed that no non-constant function f(x,y) can be computed correctly by two parties using content-oblivious communication over a single edge, where one party holds x and the other holds y. This seemingly ruled out many natural graph problems on non-2-edge-connected graphs. In this work, we show that, with the knowledge of network topology G, leader election is possible in a wide range of graphs. Our main contributions are as follows: Impossibility: Graphs symmetric about an edge admit no randomized terminating leader election algorithm, even when nodes have unique identifiers and full knowledge of G. Leader election algorithms: Trees that are not symmetric about any edge admit a quiescently terminating leader election algorithm with topology knowledge, even in anonymous networks, using O(n²) messages, where n is the number of nodes. Moreover, even-diameter trees admit a terminating leader election given only the knowledge of the network diameter D = 2r, with message complexity O(nr). Necessity of topology knowledge: In the family of graphs 𝒢 = {P₃, P₅}, both the 3-path P₃ and the 5-path P₅ admit a quiescently terminating leader election if nodes know the topology exactly. However, if nodes only know that the underlying topology belongs to 𝒢, then terminating leader election is impossible.

Mobile Byzantine Agreement in a Trusted World

Abstract
In this paper, we address the Byzantine Agreement problem in synchronous systems where Byzantine agents can move from process to process, corrupting their host. We focus on two representative models: Garay’s and Buhrman’s models. In Garay’s model, when a process has been left by the Byzantine agent, it enters a cured state, is aware of its condition, and can remain silent for a round to prevent the dissemination of incorrect information. In Buhrman’s model, a Byzantine agent moves together with the message. It has been shown that solving Byzantine Agreement requires at least 4t + 1 processes in Garay’s model, and at least 3t + 1 in Buhrman’s model. In this paper, we aim to increase the tolerance to mobile Byzantine agents by integrating a trusted counter abstraction into both models. This abstraction prevents nodes from equivocating. In the new models, we prove that at least 3t+1, respectively 2t+1 processors are needed to tolerate t mobile Byzantine agents. Furthermore, we propose novel Mobile Byzantine Agreement algorithms that match these new lower bounds for both Garay’s and Buhrman’s models, achieving agreement in 𝒪(n) synchronous rounds.

Computing in a Faulty Congested Clique

Abstract
We study a Faulty Congested Clique model, in which an adversary may fail nodes in the network throughout the computation. We show that any task of O(nlog{n})-bit input per node can be solved in roughly n rounds, where n is the size of the network. This nearly matches the linear upper bound on the complexity of the non-faulty Congested Clique model for such problems, by learning the entire input, and it holds in the faulty model even with a linear number of faults. Our main contribution is that we establish that one can do much better by looking more closely at the computation. Given a deterministic algorithm 𝒜 for the non-faulty Congested Clique model, we show how to transform it into an algorithm 𝒜' for the faulty model, with an overhead that could be as small as some logarithmic-in-n factor, by considering refined complexity measures of 𝒜. As an exemplifying application of our approach, we show that the O(n^{1/3})-round complexity of semi-ring matrix multiplication [Censor{-}Hillel, Kaski, Korhonen, Lenzen, Paz, Suomela, PODC 2015] remains the same up to polylog factors in the faulty model, even if the adversary can fail 99% of the nodes (or any other constant fraction).

Reachability of Independent Sets and Vertex Covers Under Extended Reconfiguration Rules

Abstract
In reconfiguration problems, we are given two feasible solutions to a graph problem and asked whether one can be transformed into the other via a sequence of feasible intermediate solutions under a given reconfiguration rule. While earlier work focused on modifying a single element at a time, recent studies have started examining how different rules impact computational complexity. Motivated by recent progress, we study Independent Set Reconfiguration (ISR) and Vertex Cover Reconfiguration (VCR) under the k-Token Jumping (k-TJ) and k-Token Sliding (k-TS) models. In k-TJ, up to k vertices may be replaced, while k-TS additionally requires a perfect matching between removed and added vertices. It is known that the complexity of ISR crucially depends on k, ranging from PSPACE-complete and NP-complete to polynomial-time solvable. In this paper, we further explore the gradient of computational complexity of the problems. We first show that ISR under k-TJ with k = |I| - μ remains NP-hard when μ is any fixed positive integer and the input graph is restricted to graphs of maximum degree 3 or planar graphs of maximum degree 4, where |I| is the size of feasible solutions. In addition, we prove that the problem belongs to NP not only for μ = O(1) but also for μ = O(log |I|). In contrast, we show that VCR under k-TJ is in XP when parameterized by μ = |S| - k, where |S| is the size of feasible solutions. Furthermore, we establish the PSPACE-completeness of ISR and VCR under both k-TJ and k-TS on several graph classes, for fixed k as well as superconstant k relative to the size of feasible solutions.

Space-Efficient Depth-First Search via Augmented Succinct Graph Encodings

Abstract
We call a graph G separable if a balanced separator can be computed for G of size O(n^ε) with ε < 1. Many real-world graphs are separable such as graphs of bounded genus, graphs of constant treewidth, and graphs excluding a fixed minor. In particular, the well-known planar graphs are separable. We present a succinct encoding of separable graphs G such that, after the encoding is computed, any number of depth-first searches (DFS) can be performed from any given start vertex, each in o(n) time and o(n) bits in the word RAM model. After the execution of a DFS, the succinct encoding of G is augmented such that the DFS tree is encoded inside the encoding while maintaining succinctness. Afterward, the encoding provides common DFS-related queries in constant time. These queries include queries such as lowest-common ancestor of two given vertices in the DFS tree or queries that output the lowpoint of a given vertex in the DFS tree. Furthermore, for planar graphs, we show that the succinct encoding can be computed in O(n) bits and expected linear time, and a compact variant can be constructed in O(n) time and bits. For other separable graph classes 𝒢 the runtime and space usage depends on the specific algorithms used to find balanced separators in graphs of 𝒢.

On the Randomized Locality of Matching Problems in Regular Graphs

Abstract
The main goal in distributed symmetry-breaking is to understand the locality of problems: the radius of the neighborhood that a node must explore to determine its part of a global solution. In this work, we study the locality of matching problems in the family of regular graphs, which is one of the main benchmarks for establishing lower bounds on the locality of symmetry-breaking problems, as well as for obtaining classification results. Our main results are summarized as follows: 1) Approximate matching: We develop randomized algorithms to show that (1 + ε)-approximate matching in regular graphs is truly local, i.e., the locality depends only on ε and is independent of all other graph parameters. Furthermore, as long as the degree Δ is not very small (namely, as long as Δ ≥ poly(1/ε)), this dependence is only logarithmic in 1/ε. This stands in sharp contrast to maximal matching in regular graphs which requires some dependence on the number of nodes n or the degree Δ. 2) Maximal matching: Our techniques further allow us to establish a strong separation between the node-averaged complexity and worst-case complexity of maximal matching in regular graphs, by showing that the former is only O(1). Central to our main technical contribution is a novel martingale-based analysis for the ≈ 40-year-old algorithm by Luby. In particular, our analysis shows that applying one round of Luby’s algorithm on the line graph of a Δ-regular graph results in an almost Δ/2-regular graph.

The Complexity Landscape of Dynamic Distributed Subgraph Finding

Abstract
Bonne and Censor-Hillel (ICALP 2019) initiated the study of distributed subgraph finding in dynamic networks of limited bandwidth. For the case where the target subgraph is a clique, they determined the tight bandwidth complexity bounds in nearly all settings. However, several open questions remain, and very little is known about finding subgraphs beyond cliques. In this work, we consider these questions and explore subgraphs beyond cliques in the deterministic setting. For finding cliques, we establish an Ω(log log n) bandwidth lower bound for one-round membership-detection under edge insertions only and an Ω(log log log n) bandwidth lower bound for one-round detection under both edge insertions and node insertions. Moreover, we demonstrate new algorithms to show that our lower bounds are tight in bounded-degree networks when the target subgraph is a triangle. Prior to our work, no lower bounds were known for these problems. For finding subgraphs beyond cliques, we present a complete characterization of the bandwidth complexity of the membership-listing problem for every target subgraph, every number of rounds, and every type of topological change: node insertions, node deletions, edge insertions, and edge deletions. We also show partial characterizations for one-round membership-detection and listing.

Model-Agnostic Approximation of Constrained Forest Problems

Abstract
Constrained Forest Problems (CFPs) as introduced by Goemans and Williamson in 1995 capture a wide range of network design problems with edge subsets as solutions, such as Minimum Spanning Tree, Steiner Forest, and Point-to-Point Connection. While individual CFPs have been studied extensively in individual computational models, a unified approach to solving general CFPs in multiple computational models has been lacking. Against this background, we present the shell-decomposition algorithm, a model-agnostic meta-algorithm that efficiently computes a (2+ε)-approximation to CFPs for a broad class of forest functions. The shell-decomposition algorithm isolates the problem-specific hardness of individual CFPs in a single computational subroutine, breaking the remainder of the computation into fundamental tasks that are studied extensively in a wide range of computational models. In contrast to prior work, our framework is compatible with the use of approximate distances. To demonstrate the power and flexibility of this result, we instantiate our algorithm for three fundamental, NP-hard CFPs (Steiner Forest, Point-to-Point Connection, and Facility Placement and Connection) in three different computational models (Congest, PRAM, and Multi-Pass Streaming). For constant ε, we obtain the following (2+ε)-approximations in the Congest model: [(1)] 1) For Steiner Forest specified via input components (SF-IC), where each node knows the identifier of one of k disjoint subsets of V (the input components), we achieve a deterministic (2+ε)-approximation in 𝒪̃(√n+D+k) rounds, where D is the hop diameter of the graph, significantly improving over the state of the art. 2) For Steiner Forest specified via symmetric connection requests (SF-SCR), where connection requests are issued to pairs of nodes u,v ∈ V, we leverage randomized equality testing to reduce the running time to 𝒪̃(√n+D), succeeding with high probability. 3) For Point-to-Point Connection, we provide a (2+ε)-approximation in 𝒪̃(√n+D) rounds. 4) For Facility Placement and Connection, a relative of non-metric Uncapacitated Facility Location, we obtain a (2+ε)-approximation in 𝒪̃(√n + D) rounds. We further show how to replace the √n+D term by the complexity of solving Partwise Aggregation, achieving (near-)universal optimality in any setting in which a solution to Partwise Aggregation in near-shortcut-quality time is known. Notably, all of our concrete results can be derived with relative ease once our model-agnostic meta-algorithm has been specified. This demonstrates the power of our modularization approach to algorithm design.

Two for One, One for All: Deterministic LDC-Based Robust Computation in Congested Clique

Abstract
We design a deterministic compiler that makes any computation in the Congested Clique model robust to a constant fraction α < 1 of adversarial crash faults. In particular, we show how a network of n nodes can compute any circuit of depth d, width ω, and gate total fan Δ, in d ⋅ ⌈ω/n² + Δ/n⌉ ⋅ 2^{O(√{log{n}}log log{n})} rounds in such a faulty model. As a corollary, any T-round Congested Clique algorithm can be compiled into an algorithm that completes in T² n^{o(1)} rounds in this model. Our compiler obtains resilience to node crashes by coding information across the network, and its main underlying observation is that we can leverage locally-decodable codes (LDCs) to maintain a low complexity overhead, as these allow recovering the information needed at each computational step by querying only small parts of the codeword, instead of retrieving the entire coded message, which is inherent when using block codes. The main technical contribution is that because erasures occur in known locations, which correspond to crashed nodes, we can derandomize classical LDC constructions by deterministically selecting query sets that avoid sufficiently many erasures. Moreover, when decoding multiple codewords in parallel, our derandomization load-balances the queries per-node, thereby preventing congestion and maintaining a low round complexity. Deterministic decoding of LDCs presents a new challenge: the adversary can target precisely the (few) nodes that are queried for decoding a certain codeword. We overcome this issue via an adaptive doubling strategy: if a decoding attempt for a codeword fails, the node doubles the number of its decoding attempts. We employ a similar doubling technique when the adversary crashes the decoding node itself, replacing it dynamically with two other non-crashed nodes. By carefully combining these two doubling processes, we overcome the challenges posed by the combination of a deterministic LDC with a worst case pattern of crashes.

Near-Optimal Vertex Fault-Tolerant Labels for Steiner Connectivity

Abstract
We present a compact labeling scheme for determining whether a designated set of terminals in a graph remains connected after any f (or less) vertex failures occur. An f-FT Steiner connectivity labeling scheme for an n-vertex graph G = (V,E) with terminal set U ⊆ V provides labels to the vertices of G, such that given only the labels of any subset F ⊆ V with |F| ≤ f, one can determine if U remains connected in G-F. The main complexity measure is the maximum label length. The special case U = V of global connectivity has been recently studied by Jiang, Parter, and Petruschka [Yonggang Jiang et al., 2025], who provided labels of n^{1-1/f} ⋅ poly(f,log n) bits. This is near-optimal (up to poly(f,log n) factors) by a lower bound of Long, Pettie and Saranurak [Yaowei Long et al., 2025]. Our scheme achieves labels of |U|^{1-1/f} ⋅ poly(f, log n) for general U ⊆ V, which is near-optimal for any given size |U| of the terminal set. To handle terminal sets, our approach differs from [Yonggang Jiang et al., 2025]. We use a well-structured Steiner tree for U produced by a decomposition theorem of Duan and Pettie [Ran Duan and Seth Pettie, 2020], and bypass the need for Nagamochi-Ibaraki sparsification [Hiroshi Nagamochi and Toshihide Ibaraki, 1992].

An Optimal 3-Fault-Tolerant Connectivity Oracle

Abstract
We present an optimal oracle for answering connectivity queries in undirected graphs in the presence of at most three vertex failures. Specifically, we show that we can process a graph G in O(n+m) time, in order to build a data structure that occupies O(n) space, which can be used in order to answer queries of the form "given a set F of at most three vertices, and two vertices x and y not in F, are x and y connected in G⧵ F?" in constant time, where n and m denote the number of vertices and edges, respectively, of G. The idea is to rely on the DFS-based framework introduced by Kosinas [ESA'23], for handling connectivity queries in the presence of multiple vertex failures. Our technical contribution is to show how to appropriately extend the toolkit of the DFS-based parameters, in order to optimally handle up to three vertex failures. Our approach has the interesting property that it does not rely on a compact representation of vertex cuts, and has the potential to provide optimal solutions for more vertex failures. Furthermore, we show that the DFS-based framework can be easily extended in order to answer vertex-cut queries, and the number of connected components in the presence of multiple vertex failures. In the case of three vertex failures, we can answer such queries in O(log n) time.

Fault Detection and Identification by Autonomous Mobile Robots

Abstract
The Look-Compute-Move model (LCM) is adopted to study swarms of mobile robots that have to solve a given problem. Robots are generally assumed to be autonomous, indistinguishable, anonymous, homogeneous and to move on the Euclidean plane. Different LCM sub-models have been theorized to study different settings and their computational power. Notably, the literature has focused on four base models (i.e., OBLOT, FSTA, FCOM, LUMI) that differ in memory and communication capabilities, and in different synchronization modes (e.g., fully synchronous FSYNCH, semi-synchronous SSYNCH). In this paper, we consider fault-prone models where robots can suffer from crash faults: each robot may irremediably stop working after an unpredictable time. We study the general Fault Detection (FD) problem which is solved by a swarm if it correctly detects whether a faulty robot exists in the swarm. The Fault Identification (FI) problem additionally requires identifying which robots are faulty. We consider 12 LCM sub-models (OBLOT, FSTA, FCOM, LUMI, combined with FSYNCH, SSYNCH, and the round-robin RROBIN) and we study the (im)possibility of designing reliable procedures to solve FD or FI. In particular, we propose three distributed algorithms so that a swarm can collectively solve FD under the models LUMI^FSYNCH, FCOM^FSYNCH, and LUMI^RROBIN.

Distributed and Parallel Low-Diameter Decompositions for Arbitrary and Restricted Graphs

Abstract
We consider the distributed and parallel construction of low-diameter decompositions with strong diameter. We present algorithms for arbitrary undirected, weighted graphs and also for undirected, weighted graphs that can be separated through k ∈ Õ(1) shortest paths. This class of graphs includes planar graphs, graphs of bounded treewidth, and graphs that exclude a fixed minor K_r. Our algorithms work in the PRAM, CONGEST, and the novel HYBRID communication model and are competitive in all relevant parameters. Given 𝒟 > 0, our low-diameter decomposition algorithm divides the graph into connected clusters of strong diameter 𝒟. For an arbitrary graph, an edge e ∈ E of length 𝓁_e is cut between two clusters with probability O(𝓁_e⋅log(n)/𝒟). If the graph can be separated by k ∈ Õ(1) paths, the probability improves to O(𝓁_e⋅log(log n)/𝒟). In either case, the decompositions can be computed in Õ(1) depth and Õ(m) work in the PRAM and Õ(1) time in the HYBRID model. In CONGEST, the runtimes are Õ(HD + √n) and Õ(HD) respectively. All these results hold w.h.p. Broadly speaking, we present distributed and parallel implementations of sequential divide-and-conquer algorithms where we replace exact shortest paths with approximate shortest paths. In contrast to exact paths, these can be efficiently computed in the distributed and parallel setting [STOC '22]. Further, and perhaps more importantly, we show that instead of explicitly computing vertex-separators to enable efficient parallelization of these algorithms, it suffices to sample a few random paths of bounded length and the nodes close to them. Thereby, we do not require complex embeddings whose implementation is unknown in the distributed and parallel setting.

The Singular Optimality of Distributed Computation in LOCAL

Abstract
It has been shown that one can design distributed algorithms that are (nearly) singularly optimal, meaning they simultaneously achieve optimal time and message complexity (within polylogarithmic factors), for several fundamental global problems such as broadcast, leader election, and spanning tree construction, under the KT₀ assumption. With this assumption, nodes have initial knowledge only of themselves, not their neighbors. In this case the time and message lower bounds are Ω(D) and Ω(m), respectively, where D is the diameter of the network and m is the number of edges, and there exist (even) deterministic algorithms that simultaneously match these bounds. On the other hand, under the KT₁ assumption, whereby each node has initial knowledge of itself and the identifiers of its neighbors, the situation is not clear. For the KT₁ CONGEST model (where messages are of small size), King, Kutten, and Thorup (KKT) showed that one can solve several fundamental global problems (with the notable exception of BFS tree construction) such as broadcast, leader election, and spanning tree construction with Õ(n) message complexity (n is the network size), which can be significantly smaller than m. Randomization is crucial in obtaining this result. While the message complexity of the KKT result is near-optimal, its time complexity is Õ(n) rounds, which is far from the standard lower bound of Ω(D). An important open question is whether one can achieve singular optimality for the above problems in the KT₁ CONGEST model, i.e., whether there exists an algorithm running in Õ(D) rounds and Õ(n) messages. Another important and related question is whether the fundamental BFS tree construction can be solved with Õ(n) messages (regardless of the number of rounds as long as it is polynomial in n) in KT₁. In this paper, we show that in the KT₁ LOCAL model (where message sizes are not restricted), singular optimality is achievable. Our main result is that all global problems, including BFS tree construction, can be solved in Õ(D) rounds and Õ(n) messages, where both bounds are optimal up to polylogarithmic factors. Moreover, we show that this can be achieved deterministically.

Self-Stabilizing Fully Adaptive Maximal Matching

Abstract
A self-stabilizing randomized algorithm for mending maximal matching (MM) in synchronous networks is presented. Starting from a legal MM configuration and assuming that the network undergoes k faults or topology changes (that may occur in multiple batches), the algorithm is guaranteed to stabilize back to a legal MM configuration in time O(log k) in expectation and with high probability (in k), using constant size messages. The algorithm is simple to implement and is uniform in the sense that it does not assume unique identifiers, nor does it assume any global knowledge of the communication graph including its size. It relies on a generic probabilistic phase synchronization technique that may be useful for other self-stabilizing problems. The algorithm compares favorably with the existing self-stabilizing MM algorithms in terms of the dependence of its run-time on k, a.k.a. fully adaptive run-time. In fact, this dependence is asymptotically optimal for uniform algorithms that use constant size messages.
