SEKHMET: Hash-Chained Perception Contracts for Heterogeneous Real-Time Edge Clusters

Abstract
Real-time perception pipelines on edge clusters are often scheduled as ordinary latency-sensitive pods, even when safety depends on sustained throughput and stable model outputs. This paper presents SEKHMET (Scheduling Edge Kubernetes with Hash-chained Monitoring of End-to-end Telemetry), a perception-aware orchestration layer for lightweight Kubernetes (K3s) clusters that exports window-level perception status as a control-plane signal. SEKHMET evaluates a perception-integrity contract (PIC) once per fixed-duration window and commits each window outcome into a hash-chained perception root that is published to an otherwise unmodified K3s control plane. The prototype uses a Raspberry Pi 5 perception-root node with a Hailo-8L accelerator, USB camera, and GPS receiver running a YOLOv8s detector, while up to five additional nodes generate elastic interference via swarm-stress. Under contract-unaware scheduling with multi-node interference, the end-to-end perception loop delivers ∼0.8-2.2 FPS and violates the PIC timing requirement in most of 214 windows, despite apparently healthy CPU and memory metrics. Under the same and heavier interference, SEKHMET sustains 27-30 FPS with contract_ok = True across 400 protected windows while publishing one 96-byte record per T=5s window (19.2 B/s control-plane payload). These results show that making perception requirements control-plane-visible can turn fragile best-effort perception into a protected cluster-level resource on commodity edge hardware.

Limitations to Computing Quadratic Functions on Reed-Solomon Encoded Data

Abstract
We study the problem of low-bandwidth non-linear computation on Reed-Solomon encoded data. Given an [n,k] Reed-Solomon encoding of a message vector 𝐟 ∈ 𝔽_q^k, and a polynomial g ∈ 𝔽_q[X₁, X₂, …, X_k], a user wishing to evaluate g(𝐟) is given local query access to each codeword symbol. The query response is allowed to be the output of an arbitrary function evaluated locally on the codeword symbol, and the user’s aim is to minimize the total information downloaded in order to compute g(𝐟). This problem has been studied before for linear functions g; in this work we initiate the study of non-linear functions by starting with quadratic monomials. For q = p^e and distinct i,j ∈ [k], we show that any scheme evaluating the quadratic monomial g_{i,j} := X_i X_j must download at least 2 log₂(q-1) - 3 bits of information when p is an odd prime, and at least 2log₂(q-2) -4 bits when p = 2. When k = 2, our result shows that one cannot do significantly better than the naive bound of k log₂(q) bits, which is enough to recover all of 𝐟. This contrasts sharply with prior work for low-bandwidth evaluation of linear functions g(𝐟) over Reed-Solomon encoded data, for which it is possible to substantially improve upon this bound [Venkatesan Guruswami and Mary Wootters, 2016; Tamo et al., 2018; Shutty and Wootters, 2021; Kiah et al., 2024; Con and Tamo, 2022]. On the Hardness of Approximating Distances of Quantum Codes

Abstract
The problem of computing distances of error-correcting codes is fundamental in both the classical and quantum settings. While hardness for the classical version of these problems has been known for some time (in both the exact and approximate settings), it was only recently that Kapshikar and Kundu showed these problems are also hard in the quantum setting. As our first main result, we reprove this using arguably simpler arguments based on hypergraph product codes. In particular, we get a direct reduction to CSS codes, the most commonly used type of quantum code, from the minimum distance problem for classical linear codes. Our second set of results considers the distance of a graph state, which is a key parameter for quantum codes obtained via the codeword stabilized formalism. We show that it is NP-hard to compute/approximate the distance of a graph state when the adjacency matrix of the graph is the input. In fact, we show this is true even if we only consider X-type errors of a graph state. Our techniques moreover imply an interesting classical consequence: the hardness of computing or approximating the distance of classical codes with rate equal to 1/2. One of the main motivations of the present work is a question raised by Kapshikar and Kundu concerning the NP-hardness of approximation when there is an additive error proportional to a quantum code’s length. We show that no such hardness can hold for hypergraph product codes. These observations suggest the possibility of a new kind of square root barrier.

Optimized Spectral Fault Receptive Fields for Diagnosis-Informed Prognosis

Abstract
This paper introduces Spectral Fault Receptive Fields (SFRFs), a biologically inspired technique for degradation state assessment in bearing fault diagnosis and remaining useful life (RUL) estimation. Drawing on the center-surround organization of retinal ganglion cell receptive fields, we propose a frequency-domain feature extraction algorithm that enhances the detection of fault signatures in vibration signals. SFRFs are designed as antagonistic spectral filters centered on characteristic fault frequencies, with inhibitory surrounds that enable robust characterization of incipient faults under variable operating conditions. A multi-objective evolutionary optimization strategy based on NSGA-II algorithm is employed to tune the receptive field parameters by simultaneously minimizing RUL prediction error, maximizing feature monotonicity, and promoting smooth degradation trajectories. The method is demonstrated on the XJTU-SY bearing run-to-failure dataset, confirming its suitability for constructing condition indicators in health monitoring applications. Key contributions include: (i) the introduction of SFRFs, inspired by the biology of vision in the primate retina; (ii) an evolutionary optimization framework guided by condition monitoring and prognosis criteria; and (iii) experimental evidence supporting the detection of early-stage faults and their precursors. Furthermore, we confirm that our diagnosis-informed spectral representation achieves accurate RUL prediction using a bagging regressor. The results highlight the interpretability and principled design of SFRFs, bridging signal processing, biological sensing principles, and data-driven prognostics in rotating machinery.

Resilience in Knowledge Graph Embeddings

Abstract
In recent years, knowledge graphs have gained interest and witnessed widespread applications in various domains, such as information retrieval, question-answering, recommendation systems, amongst others. Large-scale knowledge graphs to this end have demonstrated their utility in effectively representing structured knowledge. To further facilitate the application of machine learning techniques, knowledge graph embedding models have been developed. Such models can transform entities and relationships within knowledge graphs into vectors. However, these embedding models often face challenges related to noise, missing information, distribution shift, adversarial attacks, etc. This can lead to sub-optimal embeddings and incorrect inferences, thereby negatively impacting downstream applications. While the existing literature has focused so far on adversarial attacks on KGE models, the challenges related to the other critical aspects remain unexplored. In this paper, we, first of all, give a unified definition of resilience, encompassing several factors such as generalisation, in-distribution generalization, distribution adaption, and robustness. After formalizing these concepts for machine learning in general, we define them in the context of knowledge graphs. To find the gap in the existing works on resilience in the context of knowledge graphs, we perform a systematic survey, taking into account all these aspects mentioned previously. Our survey results show that most of the existing works focus on a specific aspect of resilience, namely robustness. After categorizing such works based on their respective aspects of resilience, we discuss the challenges and future research directions.

Multipass Linear Sketches for Geometric LP-Type Problems

Abstract
LP-type problems such as the Minimum Enclosing Ball (MEB), Linear Support Vector Machine (SVM), Linear Programming (LP), and Semidefinite Programming (SDP) are fundamental combinatorial optimization problems, with many important applications in machine learning applications such as classification, bioinformatics, and noisy learning. We study LP-type problems in several streaming and distributed big data models, giving ε-approximation linear sketching algorithms with a focus on the high accuracy regime with low dimensionality d, that is, when d < (1/ε)^0.999. Our main result is an O(ds) pass algorithm with O(s(√d/ε)^{3d/s}) ⋅ poly(d, log (1/ε)) space complexity in words, for any parameter s ∈ [1, d log (1/ε)], to solve ε-approximate LP-type problems of O(d) combinatorial and VC dimension. Notably, by taking s = d log (1/ε), we achieve space complexity polynomial in d and polylogarithmic in 1/ε, presenting exponential improvements in 1/ε over current algorithms. We complement our results by showing lower bounds of (1/ε)^Ω(d) for any 1-pass algorithm solving the (1 + ε)-approximation MEB and linear SVM problems, further motivating our multi-pass approach.

On the I/O Complexity of the Cocke-Younger-Kasami Algorithm and of a Family of Related Dynamic Programming Algorithms

Abstract
Asymptotically tight lower bounds are derived for the Input/Output (I/O) complexity of a class of dynamic programming algorithms, including matrix chain multiplication, optimal polygon triangulation, and the construction of optimal binary search trees. Assuming no recomputation of intermediate values, we establish an Ω(n³/(√M B)) I/O lower bound, where n denotes the size of the input and M denotes the size of the available fast memory (cache). When recomputation is allowed, we show that the same bound holds for M < cn, where c is a positive constant. In the case where M ≥ 2n, we show an Ω(n/B) I/O lower bound. We also discuss algorithms for which the number of executed I/O operations matches asymptotically each of the presented lower bounds, which are thus asymptotically tight. Additionally, we refine our general method to obtain a lower bound for the I/O complexity of the Cocke-Younger-Kasami algorithm, where the size of the grammar impacts the I/O complexity. An upper bound with asymptotically matching performance in many cases is also provided.

Compositional Reasoning for Parametric Probabilistic Automata

Abstract
We establish an assume-guarantee (AG) framework for compositional reasoning about multi-objective queries in parametric probabilistic automata (pPA) - an extension to probabilistic automata (PA), where transition probabilities are functions over a finite set of parameters. We lift an existing framework for PA to the pPA setting, incorporating asymmetric, circular, and interleaving proof rules. Our approach enables the verification of a broad spectrum of multi-objective queries for pPA, encompassing probabilistic properties and (parametric) expected total rewards. Additionally, we introduce a rule for reasoning about monotonicity in composed pPAs.

From Prediction to Action: A Constraint-Based Approach to Predictive Policing

Abstract
Crime prevention in urban environments demands both accurate crime forecasting and the efficient deployment of limited law enforcement resources. In this paper, we present an integrated framework that combines a machine learning module (i.e. PredRNN++ [Wang et al., 2018]) for spatiotemporal crime prediction with a constraint programming module for patrol route optimization. Our approach operates within the ICON loop framework [Bessiere et al., 2017], facilitating iterative refinement of predictions and immediate adaptation of patrol strategies. We validate our method using the City of Chicago Crime Dataset. Experimental results show that routes informed by crime predictions significantly outperform strategies relying solely on historical patterns or operational constraints. These findings illustrate how coupling predictive analytics with constraint programming can substantially enhance resource allocation and overall crime deterrence.

Solving the Agile Earth Observation Satellite Scheduling Problem with CP and Local Search

Abstract
The increasing hunger for remote sensing data fuels a boom in satellite imagery, leading to larger agile Earth observation satellite (AEOS) constellations. Therefore, instances of the AEOS scheduling problem (AEOSSP) has become harder to solve. As most existing approaches to solve AEOSSP are designed for a single spacecraft or smaller constellations in mind, they are not tailored to the need of our industrial partner that is about to launch a constellation of 20 AEOSs. Hence, we designed a local search solver able to schedule observations and downloads at such a scale. It relies on solving a series of sub-problems as travelling salesman problem with time windows (TSPTW), first greedily, then using a CP-SAT exact solver in order to find a solution when the greedy insertion fails. Lastly, it schedules downloads and enforces memory constraints with greedy algorithms. Experiments were carried out on instances from the literature as well as generated instances from a simulator we designed. Our experiments show that using CP to solve the sub-problem significantly improve the solutions, and overall our method is slightly better than state-of-the-art approaches.

Parallel MIP Solving with Dynamic Task Decomposition

Abstract
Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) is a foundational model in operations research. Although significant progress has been made in enhancing sequential MIP solvers through sophisticated techniques and heuristics, remarkable developments in computing resources have made parallel solving a promising direction for performance improvement. In this work, we propose a novel parallel MIP solving framework that employs dynamic task decomposition in a divide-and-conquer paradigm. Our framework incorporates a hardness estimate heuristic to identify challenging solving tasks and a reward decaying mechanism to reinforce the task decomposition decision. We apply our framework to two state-of-the-art open-source MIP solvers, SCIP and HiGHS, yielding efficient parallel solvers. Extensive experiments on the full MIPLIB benchmark, using up to 128 cores, demonstrate that our framework yields substantial performance improvements over modern divide-and-conquer parallel solvers. Moreover, our parallel solvers have established new best known solutions for 16 open MIPLIB instances.

Efficient Certified Reasoning for Binarized Neural Networks

Abstract
Neural networks have emerged as essential components in safety-critical applications - these use cases demand complex, yet trustworthy computations. Binarized Neural Networks (BNNs) are a type of neural network where each neuron is constrained to a Boolean value; they are particularly well-suited for safety-critical tasks because they retain much of the computational capacities of full-scale (floating-point or quantized) deep neural networks, but remain compatible with satisfiability solvers for qualitative verification and with model counters for quantitative reasoning. However, existing methods for BNN analysis suffer from either limited scalability or susceptibility to soundness errors, which hinders their applicability in real-world scenarios. In this work, we present a scalable and trustworthy approach for both qualitative and quantitative verification of BNNs. Our approach introduces a native representation of BNN constraints in a custom-designed solver for qualitative reasoning, and in an approximate model counter for quantitative reasoning. We further develop specialized proof generation and checking pipelines with native support for BNN constraint reasoning, ensuring trustworthiness for all of our verification results. Empirical evaluations on a BNN robustness verification benchmark suite demonstrate that our certified solving approach achieves a 9× speedup over prior certified CNF and PB-based approaches, and our certified counting approach achieves a 218× speedup over the existing CNF-based baseline. In terms of coverage, our pipeline produces fully certified results for 99% and 86% of the qualitative and quantitative reasoning queries on BNNs, respectively. This is in sharp contrast to the best existing baselines which can fully certify only 62% and 4% of the queries, respectively.

Efficient Neural Network Verification via Order Leading Exploration of Branch-and-Bound Trees

Abstract
The vulnerability of neural networks to adversarial perturbations has necessitated formal verification techniques that can rigorously certify the quality of neural networks. As the state-of-the-art, branch-and-bound (BaB) is a "divide-and-conquer" strategy that applies off-the-shelf verifiers to sub-problems for which they perform better. While BaB can identify the sub-problems that are necessary to be split, it explores the space of these sub-problems in a naive "first-come-first-served" manner, thereby suffering from an issue of inefficiency to reach a verification conclusion. To bridge this gap, we introduce an order over different sub-problems produced by BaB, concerning with their different likelihoods of containing counterexamples. Based on this order, we propose a novel verification framework Oliva that explores the sub-problem space by prioritizing those sub-problems that are more likely to find counterexamples, in order to efficiently reach the conclusion of the verification. Even if no counterexample can be found in any sub-problem, it only changes the order of visiting different sub-problems and so will not lead to a performance degradation. Specifically, Oliva has two variants, including Oliva^GR, a greedy strategy that always prioritizes the sub-problems that are more likely to find counterexamples, and Oliva^SA, a balanced strategy inspired by simulated annealing that gradually shifts from exploration to exploitation to locate the globally optimal sub-problems. We experimentally evaluate the performance of Oliva on 690 verification problems spanning over 5 models with datasets MNIST and CIFAR-10. Compared to the state-of-the-art approaches, we demonstrate the speedup of Oliva for up to 25× in MNIST, and up to 80× in CIFAR-10.

Optimal Motion Planning for Two Square Robots in a Rectilinear Environment

Abstract
Let W ⊂ ℝ² be a rectilinear polygonal environment (that is, a rectilinear polygon potentially with holes) with a total of n vertices, and let A,B be two robots, each modeled as an axis-aligned unit square, that can move rectilinearly inside W. The goal is to compute an optimal collision-free motion plan π for A and B between a given pair of source and target configurations. We study two variants of this problem and obtain the following results. - Min-Sum: Here the goal is to compute a motion plan that minimizes the sum of the lengths of the paths of the robots. We present an O(n⁴log n)-time algorithm for computing an optimal solution to the min-sum problem. This is the first polynomial-time algorithm to compute an optimal, collision-free motion of two robots amid obstacles in a planar polygonal environment. - Min-Makespan: Here the robots can move with at most unit speed, and the goal is to compute a motion plan that minimizes the maximum time taken by a robot to reach its target location. We prove that the min-makespan variant is NP-hard.
