Maximum Reachability Orientation of Mixed Graphs

Abstract
We aim to find orientations of mixed graphs optimizing the total reachability, a problem that has applications in causality and biology. For given a digraph D, we use P(D) for the set of ordered pairs of distinct vertices in V(D) and we define κ_D:P(D) → {0,1} by κ_D(u,v) = 1 if v is reachable from u in D, and κ_D(u,v) = 0, otherwise. We use R(D) = ∑_{(u,v) ∈ P(D)}κ_D(u,v). Now, given a mixed graph G, we aim to find an orientation x⃑{G} of G that maximizes R(x⃑{G}). Hakimi, Schmeichel, and Young proved that the problem can be solved in polynomial time when restricted to undirected inputs. They inquired about the complexity in mixed graphs. We answer this question by showing that this problem is NP-hard, and, moreover, APX-hard. We then develop a finer understanding of how quickly the problem becomes difficult when going from undirected to mixed graphs. To this end, we consider the parameterized complexity of the problem with respect to the number k of preoriented arcs of G, a poorly studied form of parameterization. We show that the problem can be solved in time n^{O(k)} and that a (1-ε)-approximation can be computed in time f(k,ε)n^{O(1)} for any ε > 0.

A Parameterized-Complexity Framework for Finding Local Optima

Abstract
Local search is a fundamental optimization technique that is both widely used in practice and deeply studied in theory, yet its computational complexity remains poorly understood. The traditional frameworks, PLS and the standard algorithm problem, introduced by Johnson, Papadimitriou, and Yannakakis (1988) fail to capture the methodology of local search algorithms: PLS is concerned with finding a local optimum and not with using local search, while the standard algorithm problem restricts each improvement step to follow a fixed pivoting rule. In this work, we introduce a novel formulation of local search which provides a middle ground between these models. In particular, the task is to output not only a local optimum but also a chain of local improvements leading to it. With this framework, we aim to capture the challenge in designing a good pivoting rule. Especially, when combined with the parameterized complexity paradigm, it enables both strong lower bounds and meaningful tractability results. Unlike previous works that combined parameterized complexity with local search, our framework targets the whole task of finding a local optimum and not only a single improvement step. Focusing on two representative meta-problems - Subset Weight Optimization Problem with the c-swap neighborhood and Weighted Circuit with the flip neighborhood - we establish fixed-parameter tractability results related to the number of distinct weights, while ruling out an analogous result when parameterizing by the distance to the nearest optimum via a new type of reduction.

On the Complexity of Secluded Path Problems

Abstract
This paper investigates the complexity of finding secluded paths in graphs. We focus on the Short Secluded Path problem and a natural new variant we introduce, Shortest Secluded Path. Formally, given an undirected graph G = (V, E), two vertices s,t ∈ V, and two integers k,l, the Short Secluded Path problem asks whether there exists an s-t path of length at most k with at most l neighbors. This problem is known to be computationally hard: it is W[1]-hard when parameterized by the path length k or by cliquewidth, and para-NP-complete when parameterized by the number l of neighbors. The fixed-parameter tractability is known for k+l or treewidth. In this paper, we expand the parameterized complexity landscape by designing (1) an XP algorithm parameterized by cliquewidth and (2) fixed-parameter algorithms parameterized by neighborhood diversity and twin cover number, respectively. As a byproduct, our results also provide parameterized algorithms for the classic s-t k-Path problem. Furthermore, we introduce the Shortest Secluded Path problem, which seeks a shortest s-t path with the minimum number of neighbors. In contrast to the hardness of the original problem, we reveal that this variant is solvable in polynomial time on unweighted graphs. We complete this by showing that for edge-weighted graphs, the problem becomes W[1]-hard yet remains in XP when parameterized by the shortest path distance between s and t.

A Simple Algorithm for Combinatorial n-Fold ILPs Using the Steinitz Lemma

Abstract
We present an algorithm for a class of n-fold ILPs whose existing algorithms in literature are often either (1) based on the augmentation framework where one starts with an arbitrary solution and then iteratively moves towards an optimal solution by solving appropriate programs; or (2) require solving a linear relaxation of the program; or (3) are based on decomposition/proximity based arguments. Combinatorial n-fold ILPs is a class of n-fold ILPs introduced and studied by Knop et al. [MP2020] that captures several other problems in a variety of domains. We present a simple and direct algorithm that solves combinatorial n-fold ILPs with unbounded non-negative variables via an application of the Steinitz lemma. Depending on the structure of the input ILP, we also improve upon the existing algorithms in the literature in terms of the running time, thereby showing an improvement that mirrors the one shown by Rohwedder [ICALP2025] contemporaneously and independently.

Parameterized Complexity of Vehicle Routing

Abstract
The Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) is a popular generalization of the Traveling Salesperson Problem. Instead of one salesperson traversing the entire weighted, undirected graph G, there are k vehicles available to jointly cover the set of clients C ⊆ V(G). Every vehicle must start at one of the depot vertices D ⊆ V(G) and return to its start. Capacitated Vehicle Routing (CVRP) additionally restricts the route of each vehicle by limiting the number of clients it can cover, the distance it can travel, or both. In this work, we study the complexity of VRP and the three variants of CVRP for several parameterizations, in particular focusing on the treewidth of G. We present an FPT algorithm for VRP parameterized by treewidth. For CVRP, we prove paraNP- and W[⋅]-hardness for various parameterizations, including treewidth, thereby rendering the existence of FPT algorithms unlikely. In turn, we provide an XP algorithm for CVRP when parameterized by both treewidth and the vehicle capacity.

Structural Parameters for Steiner Orientation

Abstract
We consider the Steiner Orientation problem, where we are given as input a mixed graph G = (V,E,A) and a set of k demand pairs (s_i,t_i), i ∈ [k]. The goal is to orient the undirected edges of G in a way that the resulting directed graph has a directed path from s_i to t_i for all i ∈ [k]. We adopt the point of view of structural parameterized complexity and investigate the complexity of Steiner Orientation for standard measures, such as treewidth. Our results indicate that Steiner Orientation is a surprisingly hard problem from this point of view. In particular, our main contributions are the following: 1) We show that Steiner Orientation is NP-complete on instances where the underlying graph has feedback vertex number 2, treewidth 2, pathwidth 3, and vertex integrity 6. 2) We present an XP algorithm parameterized by vertex cover number vc of complexity n^O(vc²). Furthermore, we show that this running time is essentially optimal by proving that a running time of n^o(vc²) would refute the ETH. 3) We consider parameterizations by the number of undirected or directed edges (|E| or |A|) and we observe that the trivial 2^|E| n^O(1)-time algorithm for the former parameter is optimal under the SETH. Complementing this, we show that the problem admits a 2^O(|A|) n^O(1)-time algorithm. In addition to the above, we consider the complexity of Steiner Orientation parameterized by tw+k (FPT), distance to clique (FPT), and vc+k (FPT with a polynomial kernel).

A Parameterized Study of Secluded Structures in Directed Graphs

Abstract
Given an undirected graph G and an integer k, the Secluded Π-Subgraph problem asks you to find a maximum size induced subgraph that satisfies a property Π and has at most k neighbors in the rest of the graph. This problem has been extensively studied; however, there is no prior study of the problem in directed graphs. This question has been mentioned by Jansen et al. [ISAAC'23]. In this paper, we initiate the study of Secluded Subgraph problems in directed graphs by incorporating different notions of neighborhoods: in-neighborhood, out-neighborhood, and their union. Formally, we call these problems {In, Out, Total}-Secluded Π-Subgraph, where given a directed graph G and an integer k, we want to find an induced subgraph satisfying Π of maximum size that has at most k in/out/total-neighbors in the rest of the graph, respectively. We investigate the parameterized complexity of these problems for different properties Π. In particular, we prove the following parameterized results: - We design an FPT algorithm for the Total-Secluded Strongly Connected Subgraph problem when parameterized by k. - We show that the Out-Secluded ℱ-Free Subgraph problem with parameter k is W[1]-hard, where ℱ is a family of directed graphs except any subgraph of a star graph whose edges are directed towards the center. This result also implies that In/Out-Secluded DAG is W[1]-hard, unlike the undirected variants of the two problems, which are FPT. - We design an FPT-algorithm for In/Out/Total-Secluded α-Bounded Subgraph when parameterized by k, where α-bounded graphs are a superclass of tournaments. - For undirected graphs, we improve the best-known FPT algorithm for Secluded Clique by providing a faster FPT algorithm that runs in time 1.6181^k n^𝒪(1).

Parameterized Complexity of Directed Traveling Salesman Problem

Abstract
The Directed Traveling Salesman Problem (DTSP) is a variant of the classical Traveling Salesman Problem in which the edges in the graph are directed and a vertex and edge can be visited multiple times. The goal is to find a directed closed walk of minimum length (or total weight) that visits every vertex of the given graph at least once. In a yet more general version, Directed Waypoint Routing Problem (DWRP), some vertices are marked as terminals and we are only required to visit all terminals. Furthermore, each edge has its capacity bounding the number of times this edge can be used by a solution. While both problems (and many other variants of TSP) were extensively investigated, mostly from the approximation point of view, there are surprisingly few results concerning the parameterized complexity. Our starting point is the result of Marx et al. [APPROX/RANDOM 2016] who proved that DTSP is W[1]-hard parameterized by distance to pathwidth 3. In this paper we aim to initiate the systematic complexity study of variants of Directed Traveling Salesman Problem with respect to various, mostly structural, parameters. We show that DWRP is FPT parameterized by the solution size, the feedback edge number and the vertex integrity of the underlying undirected graph. Furthermore, the problem is XP parameterized by treewidth. On the complexity side, we show that the problem is W[1]-hard parameterized by the distance to constant treedepth.

Precoloring Extension with Demands on Paths

Abstract
Let G be a graph with a set of precolored vertices, and let us be given an integer distance parameter d and a set of integer demands d₁,… ,d_c. The Distance Precoloring Extension with Demands (DPED) problem is to compute a vertex c-coloring of G such that the following three conditions hold: (i) the resulting coloring respects the colors of the precolored vertices, (ii) the distance of two vertices of the same color is at least d, and (iii) the number of vertices colored by color i is exactly d_i. This problem is motivated by a program scheduling in commercial broadcast channels with constraints on content repetition and placement, which leads precisely to the DPED problem for paths. In this paper, we study DPED on paths and present a polynomial time exact algorithm when precolored vertices are restricted to the two ends of the path and devise an approximation algorithm for DPED with an additive approximation factor polynomially bounded by d and the number of precolored vertices. Then, we prove that the Distance Precoloring Extension problem on paths, a less restrictive version of DPED without the demand constraints, and then DPED itself, is NP-complete. Motivated by this result, we further study the parameterized complexity of DPED on paths. We establish that the DPED problem on paths is W[1]-hard when parameterized by the number of colors and the distance. On the positive side, we devise a fixed parameter tractable (FPT) algorithm for DPED on paths when the number of colors, the distance, and the number of precolored vertices are considered as the parameters. Moreover, we prove that Distance Precoloring Extension is FPT parameterized by the distance. As a byproduct, we also obtain several results for the Distance List Coloring problem on paths.

Pathfinding in Self-Deleting Graphs

Abstract
In this paper, we study the problem of pathfinding on traversal-dependent graphs, i.e., graphs whose edges change depending on the previously visited vertices. In particular, we study self-deleting graphs, introduced by Carmesin et al. [Sarah Carmesin et al., 2023], which consist of a graph G = (V, E) and a function f: V → 2^E, where f(v) is the set of edges that will be deleted after visiting the vertex v. In the (Shortest) Self-Deleting s-t-path problem we are given a self-deleting graph and its vertices s and t, and we are asked to find a (shortest) path from s to t, such that it does not traverse an edge in f(v) after visiting v for any vertex v. We prove that Self-Deleting s-t-path is NP-hard even if the given graph is outerplanar, bipartite, has maximum degree 3, bandwidth 2 and |f(v)| ≤ 1 for each vertex v. We show that Shortest Self-Deleting s-t-path is W[1]-complete parameterized by the length of the sought path and that Self-Deleting s-t-path is W[1]-complete parameterized by the vertex cover number, feedback vertex set number and treedepth. We also show that the problem becomes FPT when we parameterize by the maximum size of f(v) and several structural parameters. Lastly, we show that the problem does not admit a polynomial kernel even for parameterization by the vertex cover number and the maximum size of f(v) combined already on 2-outerplanar graphs.

Faster Exponential Algorithms for Cut Problems via Geometric Data Structures

Abstract
For many hard computational problems, simple algorithms that run in time 2ⁿ ⋅ n^O(1) arise, say, from enumerating all subsets of a size-n set. Finding (exponentially) faster algorithms is a natural goal that has driven much of the field of exact exponential algorithms (e.g., see Fomin and Kratsch, 2010). In this paper we obtain algorithms with running time O(1.9999977ⁿ) on input graphs with n vertices, for the following well-studied problems: - d-Cut: find a proper cut in which no vertex has more than d neighbors on the other side of the cut; - Internal Partition: find a proper cut in which every vertex has at least as many neighbors on its side of the cut as on the other side; and - (α,β)-Domination: given intervals α,β ⊆ [0,n], find a subset S of the vertices, so that for every vertex v ∈ S the number of neighbors of v in S is from α and for every vertex v ∉ S, the number of neighbors of v in S is from β. Our algorithms are exceedingly simple, combining the split and list technique (Horowitz and Sahni, 1974; Williams, 2005) with a tool from computational geometry: orthogonal range searching in the moderate dimensional regime (Chan, 2017). Our technique is applicable to the decision, optimization and counting versions of these problems and easily extends to various generalizations with more fine-grained, vertex-specific constraints, as well as to directed, balanced, and other variants. Algorithms with running times of the form cⁿ, for c < 2, were known for the first problem only for constant d, and for the third problem for certain special cases of α and β; for the second problem we are not aware of such results.

Fantastic Flips and Where to Find Them: A General Framework for Parameterized Local Search on Partitioning Problems

Abstract
Parameterized local search combines classic local search heuristics with the paradigm of parameterized algorithmics. While most local search algorithms aim to improve given solutions by performing one single operation on a given solution, the parameterized approach aims to improve a solution by performing k simultaneous operations. Herein, k is a parameter called search radius for which the value can be chosen by a user. One major goal in the field of parameterized local search is to outline the trade-off between the size of k and the running time of the local search step. In this work, we introduce an abstract framework that generalizes natural parameterized local search approaches for a large class of partitioning problems: Given n items that are partitioned into b bins and a target function that evaluates the quality of the current partition, one asks whether it is possible to improve the solution by removing up to k items from their current bins and reassigning them to other bins. Among others, our framework applies for the local search versions of problems like Cluster Editing, Vector Bin Packing, and Nash Social Welfare. Motivated by a real-world application of the problem Vector Bin Packing, we introduce a parameter called number of types τ ≤ n and show that all problems fitting in our framework can be solved in τ^k ⋅ 2^𝒪(k) ⋅ |I|^𝒪(1) time, where |I| denotes the total input size. In case of Cluster Editing, the parameter τ generalizes the well-known parameter neighborhood diversity of the input graph. We complement these algorithms by showing that for all considered problems, an algorithm significantly improving over our algorithm with running time τ^k ⋅ 2^𝒪(k) ⋅ |I|^𝒪(1) would contradict the Exponential Time Hypothesis. Additionally, we show that even on very restricted instances, all considered problems are W[1]-hard when parameterized by the search radius k alone. In case of the local search version of Vector Bin Packing, we provide an even stronger W[1]-hardness result.

Elimination Distance to Dominated Clusters

Abstract
In the Dominated Cluster Deletion problem, we are given an undirected graph G and integers k and d and the question is to decide whether there exists a set of at most k vertices whose removal results in a graph in which each connected component has a dominating set of size at most d. In the Elimination Distance to Dominated Clusters problem, we are again given an undirected graph G and integers k and d and the question is to decide whether we can recursively delete vertices up to depth k such that each remaining connected component has a dominating set of size at most d. Bentert et al. [Bentert et al., MFCS 2024] recently provided an almost complete classification of the parameterized complexity of Dominated Cluster Deletion with respect to the parameters k, d, c, and Δ, where c and Δ are the degeneracy, and the maximum degree of the input graph, respectively. In particular, they provided a non-uniform algorithm with running time f(k,d)⋅ n^{𝒪(d)}. They left as an open problem whether the problem is fixed-parameter tractable with respect to the parameter k + d + c. We provide a uniform algorithm running in time f(k,d)⋅ n^{𝒪(d)} for both Dominated Cluster Deletion and Elimination Distance to Dominated Clusters. We furthermore show that both problems are FPT when parameterized by k+d+𝓁, where 𝓁 is the semi-ladder index of the input graph, a parameter that is upper bounded and may be much smaller than the degeneracy c, positively answering the open question of Bentert et al. We further complete the picture by providing an almost full classification for the parameterized complexity and kernelization complexity of Elimination Distance to Dominated Clusters. The one difficult base case that remains open is whether Treedepth (the case d = 0) is NP-hard on graphs of bounded maximum degree.

Sampling with a Black Box: Faster Parameterized Approximation Algorithms for Vertex Deletion Problems

Abstract
In this paper, we present Sampling with a Black Box, a unified framework for the design of parameterized approximation algorithms for vertex deletion problems (e.g., Vertex Cover, Feedback Vertex Set, etc.). The framework relies on two components: - A Sampling Step. A polynomial-time randomized algorithm that, given a graph G, returns a random vertex v such that the optimum of G⧵ {v} is smaller by 1 than the optimum of G, with some prescribed probability q. We show that such algorithms exist for multiple vertex deletion problems. - A Black Box algorithm which is either an exact parameterized algorithm, a polynomial-time approximation algorithm, or a parameterized-approximation algorithm. The framework combines these two components together. The sampling step is applied iteratively to remove vertices from the input graph, and then the solution is extended using the black box algorithm. The process is repeated sufficiently many times so that the target approximation ratio is attained with a constant probability. We use the technique to derive parameterized approximation algorithms for several vertex deletion problems, including Feedback Vertex Set, d-Hitting Set and 𝓁-Path Vertex Cover. In particular, for every approximation ratio 1 < β < 2, we attain a parameterized β-approximation for Feedback Vertex Set, which is faster than the parameterized β-approximation of [Jana, Lokshtanov, Mandal, Rai and Saurabh, MFCS 23']. Furthermore, our algorithms are always faster than the algorithms attained using Fidelity Preserving Transformations [Fellows, Kulik, Rosamond, and Shachnai, JCSS 18'].

Residue Domination in Bounded-Treewidth Graphs

Abstract
For the vertex selection problem (σ,ρ)-DomSet one is given two fixed sets σ and ρ of integers and the task is to decide whether we can select vertices of the input graph such that, for every selected vertex, the number of selected neighbors is in σ and, for every unselected vertex, the number of selected neighbors is in ρ [Telle, Nord. J. Comp. 1994]. This framework covers many fundamental graph problems such as Independent Set and Dominating Set. We significantly extend the recent result by Focke et al. [SODA 2023] to investigate the case when σ and ρ are two (potentially different) residue classes modulo m ≥ 2. We study the problem parameterized by treewidth and present an algorithm that solves in time m^tw ⋅ n^O(1) the decision, minimization and maximization version of the problem. This significantly improves upon the known algorithms where for the case m ≥ 3 not even an explicit running time is known. We complement our algorithm by providing matching lower bounds which state that there is no (m-ε)^pw ⋅ n^O(1)-time algorithm parameterized by pathwidth pw, unless SETH fails. For m = 2, we extend these bounds to the minimization version as the decision version is efficiently solvable.
