Hereditary First-Order Logic: the Tractable Quantifier Prefix Classes

Abstract
Many computational problems can be modelled as the class of all finite structures A that satisfy a fixed first-order sentence ϕ hereditarily, i.e., we require that every (induced) substructure of A satisfies ϕ. We call the corresponding computational problem the hereditary model checking problem for ϕ, and denote it by Her(ϕ). We present a complete description of the quantifier prefixes for ϕ such that Her(ϕ) is in P; we show that for every other quantifier prefix there exists a formula ϕ with this prefix such that Her(ϕ) is coNP-complete. Specifically, we show that if Q is of the form ∀*∃∀* or of the form ∀*∃*, then Her(ϕ) can be solved in polynomial time whenever the quantifier prefix of ϕ is Q. Otherwise, Q contains ∃∃∀ or ∃∀∃ as a subword, and in this case, there is a first-order formula ϕ whose quantifier prefix is Q and Her(ϕ) is coNP-complete. Moreover, we show that there is no algorithm that decides for a given first-order formula ϕ whether Her(ϕ) is in P (unless P=NP).

Optimized Spectral Fault Receptive Fields for Diagnosis-Informed Prognosis

Abstract
This paper introduces Spectral Fault Receptive Fields (SFRFs), a biologically inspired technique for degradation state assessment in bearing fault diagnosis and remaining useful life (RUL) estimation. Drawing on the center-surround organization of retinal ganglion cell receptive fields, we propose a frequency-domain feature extraction algorithm that enhances the detection of fault signatures in vibration signals. SFRFs are designed as antagonistic spectral filters centered on characteristic fault frequencies, with inhibitory surrounds that enable robust characterization of incipient faults under variable operating conditions. A multi-objective evolutionary optimization strategy based on NSGA-II algorithm is employed to tune the receptive field parameters by simultaneously minimizing RUL prediction error, maximizing feature monotonicity, and promoting smooth degradation trajectories. The method is demonstrated on the XJTU-SY bearing run-to-failure dataset, confirming its suitability for constructing condition indicators in health monitoring applications. Key contributions include: (i) the introduction of SFRFs, inspired by the biology of vision in the primate retina; (ii) an evolutionary optimization framework guided by condition monitoring and prognosis criteria; and (iii) experimental evidence supporting the detection of early-stage faults and their precursors. Furthermore, we confirm that our diagnosis-informed spectral representation achieves accurate RUL prediction using a bagging regressor. The results highlight the interpretability and principled design of SFRFs, bridging signal processing, biological sensing principles, and data-driven prognostics in rotating machinery.

Hierarchical Consensus: Scalability Through Optimism and Weak Liveness

Abstract
Scalability is a central concern of Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) distributed protocols. The ubiquitous approach to work around the well-known Dolev-Reischuk Ω(n²) communication complexity lower bound is to use a random selection process to draw a hopefully small committee from a population of agents to run the communication-heavy protocol. We propose a notion of hierarchical consensus that combines two sub-protocols: an optimistic primary sub-protocol that can tolerate less than 1/2 failures and a fallback secondary protocol that can tolerate less than 1/3 failures; we achieve the higher failure threshold by requiring a weaker notion of liveness for the primary. This distinction between the level of fault tolerance between primary and secondary is reflected in the size of committees implementing these protocols. For a population of agents with close to 2/3 of honest agents, we need to select a committee with hundreds of agents to reach the level of tolerance expected for the primary, whereas we need thousands to reach the level expected for the secondary with a very small probability of error ε. Our hierarchical construct is such that if the primary comes to a decision, it can simply propagate it to the secondary protocol, so it does not need to properly engage in an agreement protocol independently. Our architecture is flexible and allows us to use our technique for most protocols that are based on random sampling. By studying hierarchical protocols, we discovered new theoretical results of independent interest. Specifically, the ability to handover from a primary protocol requires a new Justifiability property that allows agents to pre-decide on a value, such that if the protocol decides, it must be on that pre-decided value.

A Formalization of Divided Powers in Lean

Abstract
Given an ideal I in a commutative ring A, a divided power structure on I is a collection of maps {γ_n : I → A}_{n ∈ ℕ}, subject to axioms that imply that it behaves like the family {x ↦ xⁿ/n!}_{n ∈ ℕ}, but which can be defined even when division by factorials is not possible in A. Divided power structures have important applications in diverse areas of mathematics, including algebraic topology, number theory and algebraic geometry. In this article we describe a formalization in Lean 4 of the basic theory of divided power structures, including divided power morphisms and sub-divided power ideals, and we provide several fundamental constructions, in particular quotients and sums. This constitutes the first formalization of this theory in any theorem prover. As a prerequisite of general interest, we expand the formalized theory of multivariate power series rings, endowing them with a topology and defining evaluation and substitution of power series.

Virtual Reality Prototyping Environment for Concurrent Design, Training and Rover Operations

Abstract
As part of the CASIMAR (Collaborative Astronaut Supporting Interregional Moon Analog Rover) project, initiated by the BVSR e.V. (Bundesverband Studentischer Raumfahrt), the TUDSaT (TU Darmstadt Space Technology e.V.) team is developing a Virtual Reality (VR) prototype environment to support the interdisciplinary design process of lunar exploration technologies. Given the complexity of collaboration among eight organizations, this tool aims to streamline design integration and enhance mission planning. The primary objective is to create a comprehensive 3D model of the rover, complete with predefined procedures and activities, to simulate astronaut-robot interaction. By leveraging VR technology, astronauts can familiarize themselves with the rover and its EVA (Extravehicular Activity) tools before actual deployment, improving operational safety and efficiency. Beyond training applications, this virtual environment serves as a critical platform for designing, testing, and benchmarking rover functionalities and EVA procedures. Ultimately, our work contributes to optimizing human-robotic interaction, ensuring that lunar exploration missions are both effective and well-prepared before reaching the Moon.

Advancing Intelligent Personal Assistants for Human Spaceflight

Abstract
The Artemis program and upcoming missions to Mars mark a new era of human space exploration that will require new tools to support astronaut autonomy in the absence of real-time communication with Earth. This paper investigates the role of voice-based intelligent personal assistants (IPAs) in future crewed space missions. Through semi-structured interviews with astronauts (n=3) and spaceflight experts (n=12), we identify key user-centered design requirements for IPAs in this uniquely constrained and safety-critical environment. Our thematic analysis reveals core requirements for flexibility, reliability, offline capability, and multimodal interaction. Drawing on these findings, we outline design guidelines for next-generation IPAs and discuss how technologies such as retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), knowledge graphs, and augmented reality should be combined to support flexible, reliable, and multimodal IPAs for future human spaceflight missions.

A Research Framework to Develop a Real-Time Synchrony Index to Monitor Team Cohesion and Performance in Long-Duration Space Exploration

Abstract
As humanity prepares for long-distance space exploration, optimizing group performance, the ability of a group to achieve its goals efficiently, is critical. Astronaut crews will endure isolation, confinement, and operational stress, making group synchrony - the alignment of behaviors, emotions, and physiological states - a key factor in mission success. Synchrony influences team cohesion, performance, and resilience, necessitating effective crew management strategies. This paper proposes a framework for a real-time, unobtrusive index of group synchrony to support astronauts and mission control. Research indicates that team cohesion fluctuates in isolated environments, with reduced communication and interpersonal conflicts emerging over time. A system tracking synchrony could mitigate these issues, providing proactive support and improving remote management. Additionally, it could serve as a cognitive and physiological feedback tool for astronauts and a decision-making aid for mission control, enhancing well-being and efficiency. Our approach integrates behavioral and physiological synchrony measures to assess team cohesion and performance. We propose a multi-modal synchrony index combining movement coordination, communication patterns, and physiological signals such as heart rate, electrodermal activity, and EEG. This index will be validated across different tasks to ensure applicability across diverse mission scenarios. By developing a robust synchrony index, we address a fundamental challenge in space missions: sustaining team effectiveness under extreme conditions. Beyond space exploration, our findings could benefit high-risk, high-isolation teams in submarine crews, polar expeditions, and remote research groups. Our collaboration with the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales, the Institut de Médecine et de Physiologie Spatiales, and the Toulouse University Hospital marks the first step, with experimental data collection starting this year. Ultimately, this research fosters more adaptive, responsive, and resilient teams for future space missions.

Efficient Quantum Pseudorandomness from Hamiltonian Phase States

Abstract
Quantum pseudorandomness has found applications in many areas of quantum information, ranging from entanglement theory, to models of scrambling phenomena in chaotic quantum systems, and, more recently, in the foundations of quantum cryptography. Kretschmer (TQC '21) showed that both pseudorandom states and pseudorandom unitaries exist even in a world without classical one-way functions. To this day, however, all known constructions require classical cryptographic building blocks which are themselves synonymous with the existence of one-way functions, and which are also challenging to implement on realistic quantum hardware. In this work, we seek to make progress on both of these fronts simultaneously - by decoupling quantum pseudorandomness from classical cryptography altogether. We introduce a quantum hardness assumption called the Hamiltonian Phase State (HPS) problem, which is the task of decoding output states of a random instantaneous quantum polynomial-time (IQP) circuit. Hamiltonian phase states can be generated very efficiently using only Hadamard gates, single-qubit Z rotations and CNOT circuits. We show that the hardness of our problem reduces to a worst-case version of the problem, and we provide evidence that our assumption is plausibly fully quantum; meaning, it cannot be used to construct one-way functions. We also show information-theoretic hardness when only few copies of HPS are available by proving an approximate t-design property of our ensemble. Finally, we show that our HPS assumption and its variants allow us to efficiently construct many pseudorandom quantum primitives, ranging from pseudorandom states, to quantum pseudoentanglement, to pseudorandom unitaries, and even primitives such as public-key encryption with quantum keys.

A k-mer-Based Estimator of the Substitution Rate Between Repetitive Sequences

Abstract
K-mer-based analysis of genomic data is ubiquitous, but the presence of repetitive k-mers continues to pose problems for the accuracy of many methods. For example, the Mash tool (Ondov et al. 2016) can accurately estimate the substitution rate between two low-repetitive sequences from their k-mer sketches; however, it is inaccurate on repetitive sequences such as the centromere of a human chromosome. Follow-up work by Blanca et al. (2021) has attempted to model how mutations affect k-mer sets based on strong assumptions that the sequence is non-repetitive and that mutations do not create spurious k-mer matches. However, the theoretical foundations for extending an estimator like Mash to work in the presence of repeat sequences have been lacking. In this work, we relax the non-repetitive assumption and propose a novel estimator for the mutation rate. We derive theoretical bounds on our estimator’s bias. Our experiments show that it remains accurate for repetitive genomic sequences, such as the alpha satellite higher order repeats in centromeres. We demonstrate our estimator’s robustness across diverse datasets and various ranges of the substitution rate and k-mer size. Finally, we show how sketching can be used to avoid dealing with large k-mer sets while retaining accuracy. DiVerG: Scalable Distance Index for Validation of Paired-End Alignments in Sequence Graphs

Abstract
Determining the distance between two loci within a genomic region is a recurrent operation in various tasks in computational genomics. A notable example of this task arises in paired-end read mapping as a form of validation of distances between multiple alignments. While straightforward for a single genome, graph-based reference structures render the operation considerably more involved. Given the sheer number of such queries in a typical read mapping experiment, an efficient algorithm for answering distance queries is crucial. In this paper, we introduce DiVerG, a compact data structure as well as a fast and scalable algorithm, for constructing distance indexes for general sequence graphs on multi-core CPU and many-core GPU architectures. DiVerG is based on PairG [Jain et al., 2019], but overcomes the limitations of PairG by exploiting the extensive potential for improvements in terms of scalability and space efficiency. As a consequence, DiVerG can process substantially larger datasets, such as whole human genomes, which are unmanageable by PairG. DiVerG offers faster index construction time and consistently faster query time with gains proportional to the size of the underlying compact data structure. We demonstrate that our method performs favorably on multiple real datasets at various scales. DiVerG achieves superior performance over PairG; e.g. resulting to 2.5-4x speed-up in query time, 44-340x smaller index size, and 3-50x faster construction time for the genome graph of the MHC region, as a particularly variable region of the human genome. A View on Vulnerabilites: The Security Challenges of XAI (Academic Track)

Abstract
Modern deep learning methods have long been considered as black-boxes due to their opaque decision-making processes. Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI), however, has turned the tables: it provides insight into how these models work, promoting transparency that is crucial for accountability. Yet, recent developments in adversarial machine learning have highlighted vulnerabilities in XAI methods, raising concerns about security, reliability and trustworthiness, particularly in sensitive areas like healthcare and autonomous systems. Awareness of the potential risks associated with XAI is needed as its adoption increases, driven in part by the need to enhance compliance to regulations. This survey provides a holistic perspective on the security and safety landscape surrounding XAI, categorizing research on adversarial attacks against XAI and the misuse of explainability to enhance attacks on AI systems, such as evasion and privacy breaches. Our contribution includes identifying current insecurities in XAI and outlining future research directions in adversarial XAI. This work serves as an accessible foundation and outlook to recognize potential research gaps and define future directions. It identifies data modalities, such as time-series or graph data, and XAI methods that have not been extensively investigated for vulnerabilities in current research.

Standardizing Knowledge Engineering Practices with a Reference Architecture

Abstract
Knowledge engineering is the process of creating and maintaining knowledge-producing systems. Throughout the history of computer science and AI, knowledge engineering workflows have been widely used given the importance of high-quality knowledge for reliable intelligent agents. Meanwhile, the scope of knowledge engineering, as apparent from its target tasks and use cases, has been shifting, together with its paradigms such as expert systems, semantic web, and language modeling. The intended use cases and supported user requirements between these paradigms have not been analyzed globally, as new paradigms often satisfy prior pain points while possibly introducing new ones. The recent abstraction of systemic patterns into a boxology provides an opening for aligning the requirements and use cases of knowledge engineering with the systems, components, and software that can satisfy them best, however, this direction has not been explored to date. This paper proposes a vision of harmonizing the best practices in the field of knowledge engineering by leveraging the software engineering methodology of creating reference architectures. We describe how a reference architecture can be iteratively designed and implemented to associate user needs with recurring systemic patterns, building on top of existing knowledge engineering workflows and boxologies. We provide a six-step roadmap that can enable the development of such an architecture, consisting of scope definition, selection of information sources, architectural analysis, synthesis of an architecture based on the information source analysis, evaluation through instantiation, and, ultimately, instantiation into a concrete software architecture. We provide an initial design and outcome of the definition of architectural scope, selection of information sources, and analysis. As the remaining steps of design, evaluation, and instantiation of the architecture are largely use-case specific, we provide a detailed description of their procedures and point to relevant examples. We expect that following through on this vision will lead to well-grounded reference architectures for knowledge engineering, will advance the ongoing initiatives of organizing the neurosymbolic knowledge engineering space, and will build new links to the software architectures and data science communities.

Multilingual Knowledge Graphs and Low-Resource Languages: A Review

Abstract
There is a lack of multilingual data to support applications in a large number of languages, especially for low-resource languages. Knowledge graphs (KG) could contribute to closing the gap of language support by providing easily accessible, machine-readable, multilingual linked data, which can be reused across applications. In this paper, we provide an overview of work in the domain of multilingual KGs with a focus on low-resource languages. We review the current state of multilingual KGs along with the different aspects that are crucial for creating KGs with language coverage in mind. Special consideration is given to challenges particular to low-resource languages in KGs. We further provide an overview of applications that yield multilingual KG information as well as downstream applications reusing such multilingual data. Finally, we explore open problems regarding multilingual KGs with a focus on low-resource languages.

Abstract
Openly available, collaboratively edited Knowledge Graphs (KGs) are key platforms for the collective management of evolving knowledge. The present work aims t o provide an analysis of the obstacles related to investigating and processing specifically this central aspect of evolution in KGs. To this end, we discuss (i) the dimensions of evolution in KGs, (ii) the observability of evolution in existing, open, collaboratively constructed Knowledge Graphs over time, and (iii) possible metrics to analyse this evolution. We provide an overview of relevant state-of-the-art research, ranging from metrics developed for Knowledge Graphs specifically to potential methods from related fields such as network science. Additionally, we discuss technical approaches - and their current limitations - related to storing, analysing and processing large and evolving KGs in terms of handling typical KG downstream tasks.

Abstract
Knowledge Graphs (KGs) have emerged as fundamental platforms for powering intelligent decision-making and a wide range of Artificial Intelligence (AI) services across major corporations such as Google, Walmart, and AirBnb. KGs complement Machine Learning (ML) algorithms by providing data context and semantics, thereby enabling further inference and question-answering capabilities. The integration of KGs with neuronal learning (e.g., Large Language Models (LLMs)) is currently a topic of active research, commonly named neuro-symbolic AI. Despite the numerous benefits that can be accomplished with KG-based AI, its growing ubiquity within online services may result in the loss of self-determination for citizens as a fundamental societal issue. The more we rely on these technologies, which are often centralised, the less citizens will be able to determine their own destinies. To counter this threat, AI regulation, such as the European Union (EU) AI Act, is being proposed in certain regions. The regulation sets what technologists need to do, leading to questions concerning How the output of AI systems can be trusted? What is needed to ensure that the data fuelling and the inner workings of these artefacts are transparent? How can AI be made accountable for its decision-making? This paper conceptualises the foundational topics and research pillars to support KG-based AI for self-determination. Drawing upon this conceptual framework, challenges and opportunities for citizen self-determination are illustrated and analysed in a real-world scenario. As a result, we propose a research agenda aimed at accomplishing the recommended objectives.
