Abstract
This paper presents parallel, distributed, and quantum algorithms for single-source shortest paths when edges can have negative integer weights (negative-weight SSSP). We show a framework that reduces negative-weight SSSP in all these settings to n^{o(1)} calls to any SSSP algorithm that works on inputs with non-negative integer edge weights (non-negative-weight SSSP) with a virtual source. More specifically, for a directed graph with m edges, n vertices, undirected hop-diameter D, and polynomially bounded integer edge weights, we show randomized algorithms for negative-weight SSSP with - W_{SSSP}(m,n)n^{o(1)} work and S_{SSSP}(m,n)n^{o(1)} span, given access to a non-negative-weight SSSP algorithm with W_{SSSP}(m,n) work and S_{SSSP}(m,n) span in the parallel model, and - T_{SSSP}(n,D)n^{o(1)} rounds, given access to a non-negative-weight SSSP algorithm that takes T_{SSSP}(n,D) rounds in CONGEST, and - Q_{SSSP}(m,n)n^{o(1)} quantum edge queries, given access to a non-negative-weight SSSP algorithm that takes Q_{SSSP}(m,n) queries in the quantum edge query model. This work builds off the recent result of Bernstein, Nanongkai, Wulff-Nilsen [Bernstein et al., 2022], which gives a near-linear time algorithm for negative-weight SSSP in the sequential setting. Using current state-of-the-art non-negative-weight SSSP algorithms yields randomized algorithms for negative-weight SSSP with - m^{1+o(1)} work and n^{1/2+o(1)} span in the parallel model, and - (n^{2/5}D^{2/5} + √n + D)n^{o(1)} rounds in CONGEST, and - m^{1/2}n^{1/2+o(1)} quantum queries to the adjacency list or n^{1.5+o(1)} quantum queries to the adjacency matrix. Up to a n^{o(1)} factor, the parallel and distributed results match the current best upper bounds for reachability [Jambulapati et al., 2019; Cao et al., 2021]. Consequently, any improvement to negative-weight SSSP in these models beyond the n^{o(1)} factor necessitates an improvement to the current best bounds for reachability. The quantum result matches the lower bound up to an n^{o(1)} factor [Aija Berzina et al., 2004]. Our main technical contribution is an efficient reduction from computing a low-diameter decomposition (LDD) of directed graphs to computations of non-negative-weight SSSP with a virtual source. Efficiently computing an LDD has heretofore only been known for undirected graphs in both the parallel and distributed models, and been rather unstudied in quantum models. The directed LDD is a crucial step of the sequential algorithm in [Bernstein et al., 2022], and we think that its applications to other problems in parallel and distributed models are far from being exhausted. Other ingredients of our results include altering the recursion structure of the scaling algorithm in [Bernstein et al., 2022] to surmount difficulties that arise in these models, and also an efficient reduction from computing strongly connected components to computations of SSSP with a virtual source in CONGEST. The latter result answers a question posed in [Bernstein and Nanongkai, 2019] in the negative.

Faster Min-Cost Flow and Approximate Tree Decomposition on Bounded Treewidth Graphs

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 308, 32nd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2024)

Abstract
We present an algorithm for min-cost flow in graphs with n vertices and m edges, given a tree decomposition of width τ and size S, and polynomially bounded, integral edge capacities and costs, running in Õ(m√{τ} + S) time. This improves upon the previous fastest algorithm in this setting achieved by the bounded-treewidth linear program solver of [Gu and Song, 2022; Dong et al., 2024], which runs in Õ(m τ^{(ω+1)/2}) time, where ω ≈ 2.37 is the matrix multiplication exponent. Our approach leverages recent advances in structured linear program solvers and robust interior point methods (IPM). In general graphs where treewidth is trivially bounded by n, the algorithm runs in Õ(m √ n) time, which is the best-known result without using the Lee-Sidford barrier or 𝓁₁ IPM, demonstrating the surprising power of robust interior point methods. As a corollary, we obtain a Õ(tw³ ⋅ m) time algorithm to compute a tree decomposition of width O(tw⋅ log(n)), given a graph with m edges.

Practical Expander Decomposition

Abstract
The expander decomposition of a graph decomposes the set of vertices into clusters such that the induced subgraph of each cluster is a subgraph with high conductance, and there is only a small number of inter-cluster edges. Expander decompositions are at the forefront of recent theoretical developments in the area of efficient graph algorithms and act as a central component in several state-of-the-art graph algorithms for fundamental problems like maximum flow, min-cost flow, Gomory-Hu trees, global min-cut, and more. Despite this crucial role and the existence of theoretically efficient expander decomposition algorithms, little is known on their behavior in practice. In this paper we explore the engineering design space in implementations for computing expander decompositions. We base our implementation on the near-linear time algorithm of Saranurak and Wang [SODA'19], and enhance it with practical optimizations that accelerate its running time in practice and at the same time preserve the theoretical runtime and approximation guarantees. We evaluate our algorithm on real-world graphs with up to tens of millions of edges. We demonstrate significant speedups of up to two orders of magnitude over the only prior implementation. To the best of our knowledge, our implementation is the first to compute expander decompositions at this scale within reasonable time.

Distributional Online Weighted Paging with Limited Horizon

Abstract
In this work we study the classic problem of online weighted paging with a probabilistic prediction model, in which we are given additional information about the input in the form of distributions over page requests, known as distributional online paging (DOP). This work continues a recent line of research on learning-augmented algorithms that incorporates machine-learning predictions in online algorithms, so as to go beyond traditional worst-case competitive analysis, thus circumventing known lower bounds for online paging. We first provide an efficient online algorithm that achieves a constant factor competitive ratio with respect to the best online algorithm (policy) for weighted DOP that follows from earlier work on the stochastic k-server problem. Our main contribution concerns the question of whether distributional information over a limited horizon suffices for obtaining a constant competitive factor. To this end, we define in a natural way a new predictive model with limited horizon, which we call Per-Request Stochastic Prediction (PRSP). We show that we can obtain a constant factor competitive algorithm with respect to the optimal online algorithm for this model.

On the Houdré-Tetali Conjecture About an Isoperimetric Constant of Graphs

Authors: Lap Chi Lau and Dante Tjowasi

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 317, Approximation, Randomization, and Combinatorial Optimization. Algorithms and Techniques (APPROX/RANDOM 2024)

Abstract
Houdré and Tetali defined a class of isoperimetric constants φ_p of graphs for 0 ≤ p ≤ 1, and conjectured a Cheeger-type inequality for φ_(1/2) of the form λ₂ ≲ φ_(1/2) ≲ √λ₂, where λ₂ is the second smallest eigenvalue of the normalized Laplacian matrix. If true, the conjecture would be a strengthening of the hard direction of the classical Cheeger’s inequality. Morris and Peres proved Houdré and Tetali’s conjecture up to an additional log factor, using techniques from evolving sets. We present the following related results on this conjecture. 1) We provide a family of counterexamples to the conjecture of Houdré and Tetali, showing that the logarithmic factor is needed. 2) We match Morris and Peres’s bound using standard spectral arguments. 3) We prove that Houdré and Tetali’s conjecture is true for any constant p strictly bigger than 1/2, which is also a strengthening of the hard direction of Cheeger’s inequality. Furthermore, our results can be extended to directed graphs using Chung’s definition of eigenvalues for directed graphs.

Parallelising Glauber Dynamics

Abstract
For distributions over discrete product spaces ∏_{i=1}^n Ω_i', Glauber dynamics is a Markov chain that at each step, resamples a random coordinate conditioned on the other coordinates. We show that k-Glauber dynamics, which resamples a random subset of k coordinates, mixes k times faster in χ²-divergence, and assuming approximate tensorization of entropy, mixes k times faster in KL-divergence. We apply this to obtain parallel algorithms in two settings: (1) For the Ising model μ_{J,h}(x) ∝ exp(1/2 ⟨x,Jx⟩ + ⟨h,x⟩) with ‖J‖ < 1-c (the regime where fast mixing is known), we show that we can implement each step of Θ(n/‖J‖_F)-Glauber dynamics efficiently with a parallel algorithm, resulting in a parallel algorithm with running time Õ(‖J‖_F) = Õ(√n). (2) For the mixed p-spin model at high enough temperature, we show that with high probability we can implement each step of Θ(√n)-Glauber dynamics efficiently and obtain running time Õ(√n).

High-Accuracy Multicommodity Flows via Iterative Refinement

Authors: Li Chen and Mingquan Ye

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 297, 51st International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2024)

Abstract
The multicommodity flow problem is a classic problem in network flow and combinatorial optimization, with applications in transportation, communication, logistics, and supply chain management, etc. Existing algorithms often focus on low-accuracy approximate solutions, while high-accuracy algorithms typically rely on general linear program solvers. In this paper, we present efficient high-accuracy algorithms for a broad family of multicommodity flow problems on undirected graphs, demonstrating improved running times compared to general linear program solvers. Our main result shows that we can solve the 𝓁_{q, p}-norm multicommodity flow problem to a (1 + ε) approximation in time O_{q, p}(m^{1+o(1)} k² log(1/ε)), where k is the number of commodities, and O_{q, p}(⋅) hides constants depending only on q or p. As q and p approach to 1 and ∞ respectively, 𝓁_{q, p}-norm flow tends to maximum concurrent flow. We introduce the first iterative refinement framework for 𝓁_{q, p}-norm minimization problems, which reduces the problem to solving a series of decomposable residual problems. In the case of k-commodity flow, each residual problem can be decomposed into k single commodity convex flow problems, each of which can be solved in almost-linear time. As many classical variants of multicommodity flows were shown to be complete for linear programs in the high-accuracy regime [Ding-Kyng-Zhang, ICALP'22], our result provides new directions for studying more efficient high-accuracy multicommodity flow algorithms.

On the Streaming Complexity of Expander Decomposition

Authors: Yu Chen, Michael Kapralov, Mikhail Makarov, and Davide Mazzali

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 297, 51st International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2024)

Abstract
In this paper we study the problem of finding (ε, ϕ)-expander decompositions of a graph in the streaming model, in particular for dynamic streams of edge insertions and deletions. The goal is to partition the vertex set so that every component induces a ϕ-expander, while the number of inter-cluster edges is only an ε fraction of the total volume. It was recently shown that there exists a simple algorithm to construct a (O(ϕ log n), ϕ)-expander decomposition of an n-vertex graph using Õ(n/ϕ²) bits of space [Filtser, Kapralov, Makarov, ITCS'23]. This result calls for understanding the extent to which a dependence in space on the sparsity parameter ϕ is inherent. We move towards answering this question on two fronts. We prove that a (O(ϕ log n), ϕ)-expander decomposition can be found using Õ(n) space, for every ϕ. At the core of our result is the first streaming algorithm for computing boundary-linked expander decompositions, a recently introduced strengthening of the classical notion [Goranci et al., SODA'21]. The key advantage is that a classical sparsifier [Fung et al., STOC'11], with size independent of ϕ, preserves the cuts inside the clusters of a boundary-linked expander decomposition within a multiplicative error. Notable algorithmic applications use sequences of expander decompositions, in particular one often repeatedly computes a decomposition of the subgraph induced by the inter-cluster edges (e.g., the seminal work of Spielman and Teng on spectral sparsifiers [Spielman, Teng, SIAM Journal of Computing 40(4)], or the recent maximum flow breakthrough [Chen et al., FOCS'22], among others). We prove that any streaming algorithm that computes a sequence of (O(ϕ log n), ϕ)-expander decompositions requires Ω̃(n/ϕ) bits of space, even in insertion only streams.

The Discrepancy of Shortest Paths

Abstract
The hereditary discrepancy of a set system is a quantitative measure of the pseudorandom properties of the system. Roughly speaking, hereditary discrepancy measures how well one can 2-color the elements of the system so that each set contains approximately the same number of elements of each color. Hereditary discrepancy has numerous applications in computational geometry, communication complexity and derandomization. More recently, the hereditary discrepancy of the set system of shortest paths has found applications in differential privacy [Chen et al. SODA 23]. The contribution of this paper is to improve the upper and lower bounds on the hereditary discrepancy of set systems of unique shortest paths in graphs. In particular, we show that any system of unique shortest paths in an undirected weighted graph has hereditary discrepancy O(n^{1/4}), and we construct lower bound examples demonstrating that this bound is tight up to polylog n factors. Our lower bounds hold even for planar graphs and bipartite graphs, and improve a previous lower bound of Ω(n^{1/6}) obtained by applying the trace bound of Chazelle and Lvov [SoCG'00] to a classical point-line system of Erdős. As applications, we improve the lower bound on the additive error for differentially-private all pairs shortest distances from Ω(n^{1/6}) [Chen et al. SODA 23] to Ω̃(n^{1/4}), and we improve the lower bound on additive error for the differentially-private all sets range queries problem to Ω̃(n^{1/4}), which is tight up to polylog n factors [Deng et al. WADS 23].

Abstract
In this paper, we investigate the question of whether the electrical flow routing is a good oblivious routing scheme on an m-edge graph G = (V, E) that is a Φ-expander, i.e. where |∂ S| ≥ Φ ⋅ vol(S) for every S ⊆ V, vol(S) ≤ vol(V)/2. Beyond its simplicity and structural importance, this question is well-motivated by the current state-of-the-art of fast algorithms for 𝓁_∞ oblivious routings that reduce to the expander-case which is in turn solved by electrical flow routing. Our main result proves that the electrical routing is an O(Φ^{-1} log m)-competitive oblivious routing in the 𝓁₁- and 𝓁_∞-norms. We further observe that the oblivious routing is O(log² m)-competitive in the 𝓁₂-norm and, in fact, O(log m)-competitive if 𝓁₂-localization is O(log m) which is widely believed. Using these three upper bounds, we can smoothly interpolate to obtain upper bounds for every p ∈ [2, ∞] and q given by 1/p + 1/q = 1. Assuming 𝓁₂-localization in O(log m), we obtain that in 𝓁_p and 𝓁_q, the electrical oblivious routing is O(Φ^{-(1-2/p)}log m) competitive. Using the currently known result for 𝓁₂-localization, this ratio deteriorates by at most a sublogarithmic factor for every p, q ≠ 2. We complement our upper bounds with lower bounds that show that the electrical routing for any such p and q is Ω(Φ^{-(1-2/p)} log m)-competitive. This renders our results in 𝓁₁ and 𝓁_∞ unconditionally tight up to constants, and the result in any 𝓁_p- and 𝓁_q-norm to be tight in case of 𝓁₂-localization in O(log m).

Streaming Algorithms for Connectivity Augmentation

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 297, 51st International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2024)

Abstract
We study the k-connectivity augmentation problem (k-CAP) in the single-pass streaming model. Given a (k-1)-edge connected graph G = (V,E) that is stored in memory, and a stream of weighted edges (also called links) L with weights in {0,1,… ,W}, the goal is to choose a minimum weight subset L' ⊆ L of the links such that G' = (V,E∪ L') is k-edge connected. We give a (2+ε)-approximation algorithm for this problem which requires to store O(ε^{-1} nlog n) words. Moreover, we show the tightness of our result: Any algorithm with better than 2-approximation for the problem requires Ω(n²) bits of space even when k = 2. This establishes a gap between the optimal approximation factor one can obtain in the streaming vs the offline setting for k-CAP. We further consider a natural generalization to the fully streaming model where both E and L arrive in the stream in an arbitrary order. We show that this problem has a space lower bound that matches the best possible size of a spanner of the same approximation ratio. Following this, we give improved results for spanners on weighted graphs: We show a streaming algorithm that finds a (2t-1+ε)-approximate weighted spanner of size at most O(ε^{-1} n^{1+1/t}log n) for integer t, whereas the best prior streaming algorithm for spanner on weighted graphs had size depending on log W. We believe that this result is of independent interest. Using our spanner result, we provide an optimal O(t)-approximation for k-CAP in the fully streaming model with O(nk + n^{1+1/t}) words of space. Finally we apply our results to network design problems such as Steiner tree augmentation problem (STAP), k-edge connected spanning subgraph (k-ECSS) and the general Survivable Network Design problem (SNDP). In particular, we show a single-pass O(tlog k)-approximation for SNDP using O(kn^{1+1/t}) words of space, where k is the maximum connectivity requirement.

Subquadratic Submodular Maximization with a General Matroid Constraint

Authors: Yusuke Kobayashi and Tatsuya Terao

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 297, 51st International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2024)

Abstract
We consider fast algorithms for monotone submodular maximization with a general matroid constraint. We present a randomized (1 - 1/e - ε)-approximation algorithm that requires Õ_{ε}(√r n) independence oracle and value oracle queries, where n is the number of elements in the matroid and r ≤ n is the rank of the matroid. This improves upon the previously best algorithm by Buchbinder-Feldman-Schwartz [Mathematics of Operations Research 2017] that requires Õ_{ε}(r² + √rn) queries. Our algorithm is based on continuous relaxation, as with other submodular maximization algorithms in the literature. To achieve subquadratic query complexity, we develop a new rounding algorithm, which is our main technical contribution. The rounding algorithm takes as input a point represented as a convex combination of t bases of a matroid and rounds it to an integral solution. Our rounding algorithm requires Õ(r^{3/2} t) independence oracle queries, while the previously best rounding algorithm by Chekuri-Vondrák-Zenklusen [FOCS 2010] requires O(r² t) independence oracle queries. A key idea in our rounding algorithm is to use a directed cycle of arbitrary length in an auxiliary graph, while the algorithm of Chekuri-Vondrák-Zenklusen focused on directed cycles of length two.

On the Cut-Query Complexity of Approximating Max-Cut

Authors: Orestis Plevrakis, Seyoon Ragavan, and S. Matthew Weinberg

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 297, 51st International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2024)

Abstract
We consider the problem of query-efficient global max-cut on a weighted undirected graph in the value oracle model examined by [Rubinstein et al., 2018]. Graph algorithms in this cut query model and other query models have recently been studied for various other problems such as min-cut, connectivity, bipartiteness, and triangle detection. Max-cut in the cut query model can also be viewed as a natural special case of submodular function maximization: on query S ⊆ V, the oracle returns the total weight of the cut between S and V\S. Our first main technical result is a lower bound stating that a deterministic algorithm achieving a c-approximation for any c > 1/2 requires Ω(n) queries. This uses an extension of the cut dimension to rule out approximation (prior work of [Graur et al., 2020] introducing the cut dimension only rules out exact solutions). Secondly, we provide a randomized algorithm with Õ(n) queries that finds a c-approximation for any c < 1. We achieve this using a query-efficient sparsifier for undirected weighted graphs (prior work of [Rubinstein et al., 2018] holds only for unweighted graphs). To complement these results, for most constants c ∈ (0,1], we nail down the query complexity of achieving a c-approximation, for both deterministic and randomized algorithms (up to logarithmic factors). Analogously to general submodular function maximization in the same model, we observe a phase transition at c = 1/2: we design a deterministic algorithm for global c-approximate max-cut in O(log n) queries for any c < 1/2, and show that any randomized algorithm requires Ω(n/log n) queries to find a c-approximate max-cut for any c > 1/2. Additionally, we show that any deterministic algorithm requires Ω(n²) queries to find an exact max-cut (enough to learn the entire graph).

Adaptive Sparsification for Matroid Intersection

Authors: Kent Quanrud

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 297, 51st International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2024)

Abstract
We consider the matroid intersection problem in the independence oracle model. Given two matroids over n common elements such that the intersection has rank k, our main technique reduces approximate matroid intersection to logarithmically many primal-dual instances over subsets of size Õ(k). This technique is inspired by recent work by [Assadi, 2024] and requires additional insight into structuring and efficiently approximating the dual LP. This combination of ideas leads to faster approximate maximum cardinality and maximum weight matroid intersection algorithms in the independence oracle model. We obtain the first nearly linear time/query approximation schemes for the regime where k ≤ n^{2/3}.

Better Sparsifiers for Directed Eulerian Graphs

Authors: Sushant Sachdeva, Anvith Thudi, and Yibin Zhao

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 297, 51st International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2024)

Abstract
Spectral sparsification for directed Eulerian graphs is a key component in the design of fast algorithms for solving directed Laplacian linear systems. Directed Laplacian linear system solvers are crucial algorithmic primitives to fast computation of fundamental problems on random walks, such as computing stationary distributions, hitting and commute times, and personalized PageRank vectors. While spectral sparsification is well understood for undirected graphs and it is known that for every graph G, (1+ε)-sparsifiers with O(nε^{-2}) edges exist [Batson-Spielman-Srivastava, STOC '09] (which is optimal), the best known constructions of Eulerian sparsifiers require Ω(nε^{-2}log⁴ n) edges and are based on short-cycle decompositions [Chu et al., FOCS '18]. In this paper, we give improved constructions of Eulerian sparsifiers, specifically: 1) We show that for every directed Eulerian graph G→, there exists an Eulerian sparsifier with O(nε^{-2} log² n log²log n + nε^{-4/3}log^{8/3} n) edges. This result is based on combining short-cycle decompositions [Chu-Gao-Peng-Sachdeva-Sawlani-Wang, FOCS '18, SICOMP] and [Parter-Yogev, ICALP '19], with recent progress on the matrix Spencer conjecture [Bansal-Meka-Jiang, STOC '23]. 2) We give an improved analysis of the constructions based on short-cycle decompositions, giving an m^{1+δ}-time algorithm for any constant δ > 0 for constructing Eulerian sparsifiers with O(nε^{-2}log³ n) edges.
