Covering Simple Orthogonal Polygons with Rectangles

Abstract
We study the problem of Covering Orthogonal Polygons with Rectangles, focusing on three variants: covering the interior, the boundary, and the corners. While previous work provided constant-factor approximation algorithms for these problems, significant improvements had not been achieved for over two decades. The main contribution of this work is the development of a Polynomial Time Approximation Scheme (PTAS) for both the Boundary Cover and Corner Cover problems on simple polygons, using a local search algorithm. Our work advances the state of the art, improving upon the previous best-known 4-approximation for the Boundary Cover and 2-approximation for the Corner Cover problems. The technical core of our work lies in proving the existence of planar support graphs for certain geometric hypergraphs defined by the polygon and its containment-maximal rectangles. This structural insight enables the application of the local search framework to achieve the PTAS results. We also demonstrate the limitations of this approach by constructing instances where local search fails for the Interior Cover and certain dual problems, such as the Maximum Antirectangle and Hitting Set problems. Additionally, the methods yield a PTAS for a special case of the Discrete Independent Set problem for rectangles. These results not only settle longstanding open questions but also introduce new techniques that may be of independent interest within computational geometry.

Approximation and Parameterized Algorithms for Covering with Disks of Two Types of Radii

Abstract
We study the Discrete Covering with Two Types of Radii problem motivated by its application in wireless networks. In this problem, the goal is to assign either small-range high frequency or large-range low frequency to each access point, maximizing the number of users in high-frequency regions while ensuring that each user is in the range of an access point. Unlike other weighted covering problems, our problem requires satisfying two simultaneous objectives, which calls for novel approaches that leverage the underlying geometry of the problem. In our work, we present two new algorithms: the first is a polynomial-time (2.5 + ε)-approximation, and the second is an exact algorithm for sparse instances, which is fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) in the number of large-radius disks. We also prove that such an FPT algorithm is impossible for general instances lacking sparsity, assuming the Exponential Time Hypothesis. Before our work, the best-known polynomial-time approximation factor was 4 for the problem. Our approximation algorithm results from a fine-grained classification of points that can contribute to the gain of a solution. Based on this classification, we design two sub-algorithms with interdependent guarantees to recover the respective class of points as gain. Our algorithm exploits further properties of Delaunay triangulations to achieve the improved bound. The FPT algorithm is based on branching that utilizes the sparsity of the instances to limit the overall search space.

Crossing and Independent Families Among Polygons

Abstract
Given a set A of points in the plane, a family of line segments forming a matching in A is called crossing (or independent) if each pair of segments in the family intersects (or is non-intersecting, respectively). In past works, these notions have been generalized to polygons by identifying the points in A with the vertices of a given set of polygons and forbidding the line segments from intersecting or overlapping with polygon walls. In this work, we study the computational complexity of computing maximum crossing and independent families in this more general setting. As our first two results, we show that both problems are NP-hard already when the polygons are triangles. Motivated by this, we turn to parameterized algorithms. For our main algorithmic results, we consider the number of polygons on the input as the natural parameter and under this parameterization obtain a fixed-parameter algorithm for computing a largest crossing family among these polygons, and a separate XP-algorithm for computing a largest independent family that lies in one of the faces of the polygonal domain.

Enumerating Minimal Dominating Sets and Variants in Chordal Bipartite Graphs

Abstract
Enumerating minimal dominating sets with polynomial delay in bipartite graphs is a long-standing open problem. To date, even the subcase of chordal bipartite graphs is open, with the best known algorithm due to Golovach, Heggernes, Kanté, Kratsch, Sæther, and Villanger running in incremental-polynomial time. We improve on this result by providing a polynomial delay and space algorithm enumerating minimal dominating sets in chordal bipartite graphs. Additionally, we show that the total and connected variants admit polynomial and incremental-polynomial delay algorithms, respectively, within the same class. This provides an alternative proof of a result by Golovach et al. for total dominating sets, and answers an open question for the connected variant. Finally, we give evidence that the techniques used in this paper cannot be generalized to bipartite graphs for (total) minimal dominating sets, unless P = NP, and show that enumerating minimal connected dominating sets in bipartite graphs is harder than enumerating minimal transversals in general hypergraphs.

Parameterized Spanning Tree Congestion

Abstract
In this paper we study the Spanning Tree Congestion problem, where we are given an undirected graph G = (V,E) and are asked to find a spanning tree T of minimum maximum congestion. Here, the congestion of an edge e ∈ T is the number of edges uv ∈ E such that the (unique) path from u to v in T traverses e. We consider this well-studied NP-hard problem from the point of view of (structural) parameterized complexity and obtain the following results: - We resolve a natural open problem by showing that Spanning Tree Congestion is not FPT parameterized by treewidth (under standard assumptions). More strongly, we present a generic reduction which applies to (almost) any parameter of the form "vertex-deletion distance to class 𝒞", thus obtaining W[1]-hardness for more restricted parameters, including tree-depth plus feedback vertex set, or incomparable to treewidth, such as twin cover. Via a slight tweak of the same reduction we also show that the problem is NP-complete on graphs of modular-width 4. - Even though it is known that Spanning Tree Congestion remains NP-hard on instances with only one vertex of unbounded degree, it is currently open whether the problem remains hard on bounded-degree graphs. We resolve this question by showing NP-hardness on graphs of maximum degree 8. - Complementing the problem’s W[1]-hardness for treewidth, we formulate an algorithm that runs in time roughly {(k+w)}^{𝒪(w)}, where k is the desired congestion and w the treewidth, improving a previous argument for parameter k+w that was based on Courcelle’s theorem. This explicit algorithm pays off in two ways: it allows us to obtain an FPT approximation scheme for parameter treewidth, that is, a (1+ε)-approximation running in time roughly {(w/ε)}^{𝒪(w)}; and it leads to an exact FPT algorithm for parameter clique-width+k via a Win/Win argument. - Finally, motivated by the problem’s hardness for most standard structural parameters, we present FPT algorithms for several more restricted cases, namely, for the parameters vertex-deletion distance to clique; vertex integrity; and feedback edge set, in the latter case also achieving a single-exponential running time dependence on the parameter.

Shortest Paths in Multimode Graphs

Abstract
In this work we study shortest path problems in multimode graphs, a generalization of the min-distance measure introduced by Abboud, Vassilevska W. and Wang in [SODA'16]. A multimode shortest path is the shortest path using one of multiple "modes" of transportation that cannot be combined. This represents real-world scenarios where different modes are not combinable, such as flights operated by different airline alliances. The problem arises naturally in machine learning in the context of learning with multiple embedding. More precisely, a k-multimode graph is a collection of k graphs on the same vertex set and the k-mode distance between two vertices is defined as the minimum among the distances computed in each individual graph. We focus on approximating fundamental graph parameters on these graphs, specifically diameter and radius. In undirected multimode graphs we first show an elegant linear time 3-approximation algorithm for 2-mode diameter. We then extend this idea into a general subroutine that can be used as a part of any α-approximation, and use it to construct a 2 and 2.5 approximation algorithm for 2-mode diameter. For undirected radius, we introduce a general scheme that can compute a 3-approximation of the k-mode radius for any k and runs in near linear time in the case of k = O(1). In the directed case we establish an equivalence between approximating 2-mode diameter on DAGs and approximating the min-diameter, while for general graphs we develop novel techniques and provide a linear time algorithm to determine whether the diameter is finite. We also develop many conditional fine-grained lower bounds for various multimode diameter and radius approximation problems. We are able to show that many of our algorithms are tight under popular fine-grained complexity hypotheses, including our linear time 3-approximation for 3-mode undirected diameter and radius. As part of this effort we propose the first extension to the Hitting Set Hypothesis [SODA'16], which we call the 𝓁-Hitting Set Hypothesis. We use this hypothesis to prove the first parameterized lower bound tradeoff for radius approximation algorithms.

Rapid Mixing of the Flip Chain over Non-Crossing Spanning Trees

Abstract
We show that the flip chain for non-crossing spanning trees of n+1 points in convex position mixes in time O(n⁸log n). We use connections between Fuss-Catalan structures to construct a comparison argument with a chain similar to Wilson’s lattice path chain (Wilson 2004).

The Maximum Clique Problem in a Disk Graph Made Easy

Abstract
A disk graph is an intersection graph of disks in ℝ². Determining the computational complexity of finding a maximum clique in a disk graph is a long-standing open problem. In 1990, Clark, Colbourn, and Johnson gave a polynomial-time algorithm for computing a maximum clique in a unit disk graph. However, finding a maximum clique when disks are of arbitrary size is widely believed to be a challenging open problem. In this paper, we provide a new perspective to examine adjacencies in a disk graph that helps obtain the following results. - We design an 𝒪^*(n^{2k})-time algorithm, where 𝒪^* hides a polynomial factor, to find a maximum clique in a n-vertex disk graph with k different sizes of radii. This is polynomial for every fixed k, and thus settles the open question for the case when k = 2. - Given a set of n unit disks, we show how to compute a maximum clique inside each possible axis-aligned rectangle determined by the disk centers in O(n⁵log n)-time. This is at least a factor of n^{4/3} faster than applying the fastest known algorithm for finding a maximum clique in a unit disk graph for each rectangle independently. - We give an 𝒪^*(n^{2rk})-time algorithm to find a maximum clique in a n-vertex ball graph with k different sizes of radii where the ball centers lie on r parallel planes. This is polynomial for every fixed k and r, and thus contrasts the previously known NP-hardness result for finding a maximum clique in an arbitrary ball graph. - We design an 𝒪^*(n^{2k})-time algorithm to find a maximum clique in the intersection graph of a set S of n L-visible convex polygons, where k is the number of distinct shapes in S. This contrasts the known hardness result on finding a maximum clique in the intersection graph of unit disks and axis-aligned rectangles.

Abstract
A hypergraph H consists of a set V of vertices and a set E of hyperedges that are subsets of V. A t-tuple of H is a subset of t vertices of V. A t-tuple k-coloring of H is a mapping of its t-tuples into k colors. A coloring is called (t,k,f)-polychromatic if each hyperedge of E that has at least f vertices contains tuples of all the k colors. Let f_H(t,k) be the minimum f such that H has a (t,k,f)-polychromatic coloring. For a family of hypergraphs ℋ let f_H(t,k) be the maximum f_H(t,k) over all hypergraphs H in H. Determining f_H(t,k) has been an active research direction in recent years. This is challenging even for t = 1. We present several new results in this direction for t ≥ 2. - Let H be the family of hypergraphs H that is obtained by taking any set P of points in ℝ², setting V: = P and E: = {d ∩ P: d is a disk in ℝ²}. We prove that f_ H(2,k) ≤ 3.7^k, that is, the pairs of points (2-tuples) can be k-colored such that any disk containing at least 3.7^k points has pairs of all colors. We generalize this result to points and balls in higher dimensions. - For the family H of hypergraphs that are defined by grid vertices and axis-parallel rectangles in the plane, we show that f_H(2,k) ≤ √{ck ln k} for some constant c. We then generalize this to higher dimensions, to other shapes, and to tuples of larger size. - For the family H of shrinkable hypergraphs of VC-dimension at most d we prove that f_ H(d+1,k) ≤ c^k for some constant c = c(d). Towards this bound, we obtain a result of independent interest: Every hypergraph with n vertices and with VC-dimension at most d has a (d+1)-tuple T of depth at least n/c, i.e., any hyperedge that contains T also contains n/c other vertices. - For the relationship between t-tuple coloring and vertex coloring in any hypergraph H we establish the inequality 1/e⋅ tk^{1/t} ≤ f_H(t,k) ≤ f_H(1,tk^{1/t}). For the special case of k = 2, referred to as the bichromatic coloring, we prove that t+1 ≤ f_H(t,2) ≤ max{f_H(1,2), t+1}; this improves upon the previous best known upper bound. - We study the relationship between tuple coloring and epsilon nets. In particular we show that if f_H(1,k) = O(k) for a hypergraph H with n vertices, then for any 0 < ε < 1 the t-tuples of H can be partitioned into Ω((εn/t)^t) ε-t-nets. This bound is tight when t is a constant.

Spanner Enumeration for Temporal Graphs

Abstract
A spanner of a temporal graph is a subset of edges that preserves connectivity over time between vertices. A minimal spanner is one in which no additional edges can be removed without breaking this connectivity. Our focus is on enumerating minimal spanners for a given temporal graph. We explore several variations of this problem based on the type of connectivity that must be maintained, ranging from one-to-all connectivity to one-to-all-to-one, many-to-all, and finally all-to-all connectivity. We establish that these problems become progressively harder: (i) We present a polynomial-delay enumeration algorithm for one-to-all connectivity; (ii) We prove Dual-hardness for both one-to-all-to-one and many-to-all connectivity, even in the restricted case of two-to-all; (iii) Finally, for all-to-all connectivity, we show that enumeration cannot be performed in output-polynomial time unless P = NP.

Approximating Densest Subgraph in Geometric Intersection Graphs

Abstract
For an undirected graph 𝖦 = (𝖵, 𝖤), with n vertices and m edges, the densest subgraph problem, is to compute a subset S ⊆ 𝖵 which maximizes the ratio |𝖤_S|/|S|, where 𝖤_S ⊆ 𝖤 is the set of all edges of 𝖦 with endpoints in S. The densest subgraph problem is a well studied problem in computer science. Existing exact and approximation algorithms for computing the densest subgraph require Ω(m) time. We present near-linear time (in n) approximation algorithms for the densest subgraph problem on implicit geometric intersection graphs, where the vertices are explicitly given but not the edges. As a concrete example, we consider n disks in the plane with arbitrary radii and present two different approximation algorithms. As a by-product, we show a reduction from (shallow) range-reporting to approximate counting/sampling which seems to be new and is useful for other problems such as independent query sampling.

Dominating Set, Independent Set, Discrete k-Center, Dispersion, and Related Problems for Planar Points in Convex Position

Abstract
Given a set P of n points in the plane, its unit-disk graph G(P) is a graph with P as its vertex set such that two points of P are connected by an edge if their (Euclidean) distance is at most 1. We consider several classical problems on G(P) in a special setting when points of P are in convex position. These problems are all NP-hard in the general case. We present efficient algorithms for these problems under the convex position assumption. ● For the problem of finding the smallest dominating set of G(P), we present an O(knlog n) time algorithm, where k is the smallest dominating set size. We also consider the weighted case in which each point of P has a weight and the goal is to find a dominating set in G(P) with minimum total weight; our algorithm runs in O(n³log² n) time. In particular, for a given k, our algorithm can compute in O(kn²log² n) time a minimum weight dominating set of size at most k (if it exists). ● For the discrete k-center problem, which is to find a subset of k points in P (called centers) for a given k, such that the maximum distance between any point in P and its nearest center is minimized. We present an algorithm that solves the problem in O(min{n^{4/3}log n+knlog² n,k² nlog²n}) time, which is O(n²log² n) in the worst case when k = Θ(n). For comparison, the runtime of the current best algorithm for the continuous version of the problem where centers can be anywhere in the plane is O(n³ log n). ● For the problem of finding a maximum independent set in G(P), we give an algorithm of O(n^{7/2}) time and another randomized algorithm of O(n^{37/11}) expected time, which improve the previous best result of O(n⁶log n) time. Our algorithms can be extended to compute a maximum-weight independent set in G(P) with the same time complexities when points of P have weights. - If we are looking for an (unweighted) independent set of size 3, we derive an algorithm of O(nlog n) time; the previous best algorithm runs in O(n^{4/3}log² n) time (which works for the general case where points of P are not necessarily in convex position). - If points of P have weights and are not necessarily in convex position, we present an algorithm that can find a maximum-weight independent set of size 3 in O(n^{5/3+δ}) time for an arbitrarily small constant δ > 0. By slightly modifying the algorithm, a maximum-weight clique of size 3 can also be found within the same time complexity. ● For the dispersion problem, which is to find a subset of k points from P for a given k, such that the minimum pairwise distance of the points in the subset is maximized. We present an algorithm of O(n^{7/2}log n) time and another randomized algorithm of O(n^{37/11}log n) expected time, which improve the previous best result of O(n⁶) time. - If k = 3, we present an algorithm of O(nlog² n) time and another randomized algorithm of O(nlog n) expected time; the previous best algorithm runs in O(n^{4/3}log² n) time (which works for the general case where points of P are not necessarily in convex position).

A Fast Algorithm for Computing a Planar Support for Non-Piercing Rectangles

Abstract
For a hypergraph ℋ = (X,ℰ) a support is a graph G on X such that for each E ∈ ℰ, the induced subgraph of G on the elements in E is connected. If G is planar, we call it a planar support. A set of axis parallel rectangles ℛ forms a non-piercing family if for any R₁, R₂ ∈ ℛ, R₁⧵R₂ is connected. Given a set P of n points in ℝ² and a set ℛ of m non-piercing axis-aligned rectangles, we give an algorithm for computing a planar support for the hypergraph (P,ℛ) in O(nlog² n + (n+m)log m) time, where each R ∈ ℛ defines a hyperedge consisting of all points of P contained in R.

Sweeping Arrangements of Non-Piercing Regions in the Plane

Abstract
Let Γ be a finite set of Jordan curves in the plane. For any curve γ ∈ Γ, we denote the bounded region enclosed by γ as γ̃. We say that Γ is a non-piercing family if for any two curves α , β ∈ Γ, α̃ ⧵ β̃ is a connected region. A non-piercing family of curves generalizes a family of 2-intersecting curves in which each pair of curves intersect in at most two points. Snoeyink and Hershberger ("Sweeping Arrangements of Curves", SoCG '89) proved that if we are given a family Γ of 2-intersecting curves and a sweep curve γ ∈ Γ, then the arrangement can be swept by γ while always maintaining the 2-intersecting property of the curves. We generalize the result of Snoeyink and Hershberger to the setting of non-piercing curves. We show that given an arrangement of non-piercing curves Γ, and a sweep curve γ ∈ Γ, the arrangement can be swept by γ so that the arrangement remains non-piercing throughout the process. We also give a shorter and simpler proof of the result of Snoeyink and Hershberger, and give an eclectic set of applications.

Safety Verification of Networked Control Systems by Complex Zonotopes

Abstract
Networked control systems (NCS) are widely used in real world applications because of their advantages, such as remote operability and reduced installation costs. However, they are prone to various inaccuracies in execution like delays, packet dropouts, inaccurate sensing and quantization errors. To ensure safety of NCS, their models have to be verified under the consideration of aforementioned uncertainties. In this paper, we tackle the problem of verifying safety of models of NCS under uncertain sampling time, inaccurate output measurement or estimation, and unknown disturbance input. Unbounded-time safety verification requires approximation of reachable sets by invariants, whose computation involves set operations. For uncertain linear dynamics, two important set operations for invariant computation are linear transformation and Minkowski sum operations. Zonotopes have the advantage that linear transformation and Minkowski sum operations can be efficiently approximated. However, they can not encode directions of convergence of trajectories along complex eigenvectors, which is closely related to encoding invariants. Therefore, we extend zonotopes to the complex valued domain by a representation called complex zonotope, which can capture contraction along complex eigenvectors for determining invariants. We prove a related mathematical result that in case of accurate feedback sampling, a complex zonotope will represent an invariant for a stable NCS. In addition, we propose an algorithm to verify the general case based on complex zonotopes, when there is uncertainty in sampling time and in input. We demonstrate the efficiency of our algorithm on benchmark examples and compare it with a state-of-the-art verification tool.
