Breaking 2-Cores for Invertible Bloom Lookup Tables by Structure Prediction

Abstract
Invertible Bloom Lookup Tables (IBLTs) provide a highly space-efficient way to reconstruct small sets resulting from a large number of insertions and deletions of elements, such as in streaming or distributed computation of the symmetric difference of similar sets. The set recovery process succeeds if the IBLT size is at least 1.22 times the size of the encoded set; otherwise, a 2-core occurs with high probability in the corresponding random hypergraph. However, the sets in practice often exhibit structure that allows for performance beyond worst-case bounds. Here, we demonstrate that structured sets - such as the k-mers in the symmetric difference of two closely related genomes - can be recovered with an IBLT of significantly smaller size. We achieve this by employing structure-aware predictors to break the 2-core whenever the recovery process gets stuck. Importantly, this approach modifies only the decoding procedure, leaving the IBLT data structure unchanged. We prove that even a weak matching-based predictor enables the recovery of 27% more elements than the nominal IBLT size. Equipped with simple predictors for k-mers of genomic datasets, we demonstrate that recovering a symmetric difference with high probability can be done with an IBLT of size only 66% of the encoded set size for k = 31, improving the space efficiency by almost a factor of two. Moreover, we design an improved method for k-mers with large k that combines subsampling with nearly perfect prediction via fingerprinting and achieves a scaling property, requiring only O(M log M) bits for recovering M k-mers, instead of Θ(k⋅M) bits of the standard IBLT. Overall, our results highlight the possibility of significant space-efficiency improvements for IBLTs on datasets with predictable structure.

How Many Slopes Does Polynomial Area Cost?

Abstract
In this work, we study the interplay between the number of slopes, the number of bends per edge, and the area requirements for planar drawings of bounded-degree graphs. Our motivation stems from the fact that, while numerous algorithms produce planar drawings with few slopes for graphs of relatively small degree in polynomial area, existing approaches for higher-degree graphs often require super-polynomial area. We address this gap in the literature by presenting new constructions that yield polynomial-area drawings with few bends per edge while slightly increasing the required number of slopes, thereby providing the first systematic study of slopes, bends and area trade-offs.

Robotic Arm Rotation: Standing up Is Harder Than You Think

Abstract
We study motion-planning problems for planar robotic arms that rotate around fixed centers while avoiding collisions. In the SM-RAMP model, each unit-length arm may rotate at most once; the question is whether all arms can be rotated to the vertical position. We resolve an open problem of Bousquet et al. [Bousquet et al., 2026] by proving that SM-RAMP is NP-complete, even in the horizontal-to-vertical setting. Our hardness proof uses a structural analysis of rotation-propagation chains and introduces a combinatorial abstraction of independent interest, the Lighthouse Propagation problem, which we show is itself NP-complete. We then consider the multi-move variant MM-RAMP, where each arm may rotate multiple times among a fixed set of allowed angles (or orientations). We prove that MM-RAMP is PSPACE-complete even when each arm has only a few allowed angles, in sharp contrast with the single-move case. Finally, we give two fixed-parameter tractable algorithms: for MAX-SM-RAMP parameterized by the number k of arms to be made vertical, and for 2A-MM-RAMP (restricted to horizontal and vertical) parameterized by the number 𝓁 of allowed rotations.

Upward Book Embeddings of Partitioned Digraphs

Abstract
In 1999, Heath, Pemmaraju, and Trenk [SIAM J. Comput. 28(4), 1999] extended the classic notion of book embeddings to digraphs, introducing the concept of upward book embeddings, in which the vertices must appear along the spine in a topological order and the edges are partitioned into pages, so that no two edges in the same page cross. For a partitioned digraph G = (V, ⋃^k_{i=1} E_i), that is, a digraph whose edge set is partitioned into k subsets, an upward book embedding is required to assign edges to pages as prescribed by the given partition. In a companion paper, Heath and Pemmaraju [SIAM J. Comput. 28(5), 1999] proved that the problem of testing the existence of an upward book embedding of a partitioned digraph is linear-time solvable for k = 1 and recently Akitaya, Demaine, Hesterberg, and Liu [GD, 2017] have shown the problem NP-complete for k ≥ 3. In this paper, we study upward book embeddings of partitioned digraphs and focus on the unsolved case k = 2. Our first main result is a novel characterization of the upward embeddings that support an upward book embedding in two pages. We exploit this characterization in several ways, and obtain a rich picture of the complexity landscape of the problem. First, we show that the problem remains NP-complete when k = 2, thus closing the complexity gap for the problem. Second, we show that, for an n-vertex partitioned digraph with a prescribed planar embedding, the existence of an upward book embedding that respects the given planar embedding can be tested in O(n log³ n) time. Finally, leveraging the SPQ(R)-tree decomposition of biconnected graphs into triconnected components, we present a cubic-time testing algorithm for biconnected directed partial 2-trees.

Line Segment Visibility in Simple Polygons: Exact, Robust, Scalable Computation and Applications

Abstract
The weak visibility polygon of a line segment s inside a simple polygon P, denoted by V_P(s), is the region of the polygon that is visible from at least one point on s. Given its fundamental nature in computational geometry, several algorithms have been proposed to compute weak visibility polygons efficiently, each with different trade-offs in terms of preprocessing time, query time, and space complexity. Although there are many applications that require computing these polygons such as computer graphics, robot motion planning, and network communication systems, there is a lack of any implementations of these algorithms in the literature - not to mention one that is exact, robust, and scalable. Furthermore, weak segment visibility polygons are used as basic building blocks in several other algorithms, such as in minimum-link path computation. In this work, we present an implementation of an optimal linear-time algorithm for computing the weak visibility polygon of a segment inside a triangulated simple polygon. Our implementation provides exact, robust geometric primitives and optimizations to handle large inputs with more than 18,000,000 vertices. We demonstrate two concrete applications: (1) construction of window partitions, a standard data structure in visibility algorithms, and (2) support for optimal minimum-link path queries between two points in a simple polygon, the latter serving as a direct use case of the former. Experimental results on a variety of polygon families confirm that the end-to-end running time scales linearly with the size of the polygon and is dominated by the cost of computing the triangulation, validating the practicality and scalability of the approach. The implementation is released as open source in the format of a CGAL package to support reproducibility and further research.

Delaunay Triangulations with Predictions

Abstract
We investigate algorithms with predictions in computational geometry, specifically focusing on the basic problem of computing 2D Delaunay triangulations. Given a set P of n points in the plane and a triangulation G that serves as a "prediction" of the Delaunay triangulation, we would like to use G to compute the correct Delaunay triangulation DT(P) more quickly when G is "close" to DT(P). We obtain a variety of results of this type, under different deterministic and probabilistic settings, including the following: 1) Define D to be the number of edges in G that are not in DT(P). We present a deterministic algorithm to compute DT(P) from G in O(n + Dlog³ n) time, and a randomized algorithm in O(n+Dlog n) expected time, the latter of which is optimal in terms of D. 2) Let R be a random subset of the edges of DT(P), where each edge is chosen independently with probability ρ. Suppose G is any triangulation of P that contains R. We present an algorithm to compute DT(P) from G in O(nlog log n + nlog(1/ρ)) time with high probability. 3) Define d_{vio} to be the maximum number of points of P strictly inside the circumcircle of a triangle in G (the number is 0 if G is equal to DT(P)). We present a deterministic algorithm to compute DT(P) from G in O(nlog^*n + nlog d_{vio}) time. We also obtain results in similar settings for related problems such as 2D Euclidean minimum spanning trees, and hope that our work will open up a fruitful line of future research.

A Dichotomy for 1-Planarity with Restricted Crossing Types Parameterized by Treewidth

Abstract
A drawing of a graph is 1-planar if each edge participates in at most one crossing and adjacent edges do not cross. Up to symmetry, each crossing in a 1-planar drawing belongs to one out of six possible crossing types, where a type characterizes the subgraph induced by the four vertices of the crossing edges. Each of the 63 possible nonempty subsets 𝒮 of crossing types gives a recognition problem: does a given graph admit an 𝒮-restricted drawing, that is, a 1-planar drawing where the crossing type of each crossing is in 𝒮? We show that there is a set 𝒮_bad with three crossing types and the following properties: - If 𝒮 contains no crossing type from 𝒮_bad, then the recognition of graphs that admit an 𝒮-restricted drawing is fixed-parameter tractable with respect to the treewidth of the input graph. - If 𝒮 contains any crossing type from 𝒮_bad, then it is NP-hard to decide whether a graph has an 𝒮-restricted drawing, even when considering graphs of constant pathwidth. We also extend this characterization of crossing types to 1-planar straight-line drawings and show the same complexity behaviour parameterized by treewidth.

Structural Parameterizations of Simultaneous Planarity

Abstract
Given a set of graphs on the same vertex set, the problem Simultaneous Embedding With Fixed Edges (SEFE) asks, whether there exist planar drawings of all input graphs, such that every pair of drawings coincides on their shared subgraph. It is known that SEFE is NP-complete [Elisabeth Gassner et al., 2006], even in the so-called sunflower case, where all pairs of input graphs have the same shared graph G_∩ [Marcus Schaefer, 2012]. Fink, Pfretzschner, and Rutter [Simon D. Fink et al., 2023] recently initiated the study of the parameterized complexity of SEFE in the sunflower case, mainly focusing on structural parameters of G_∩. In this work, we shift the focus towards parameters of the union graph G_∪ that contains the edges of all input graphs. On the positive side, we establish fixed-parameter tractability for the problem with respect to the feedback edge set number of G_∪. We complement this result by showing that it, surprisingly, remains NP-complete even if G_∪ has constant vertex cover number. These results settle two open questions posed by Fink et al. [Simon D. Fink et al., 2023].

NNP-NET: Accelerating t-SNE Graph Drawing for Very Large Graphs by Neural Networks

Abstract
tsNET is a recent graph drawing (GD) method that creates high quality layouts but suffers from a very high runtime. We present a new GD method, NNP-NET, which reduces tsNET’s time complexity to generate layouts for very large graphs in seconds. Additionally, we extend tsNET to support drawing graphs with edge weights. We accomplish this by replacing tsNET’s t-SNE projection with Neural Network Projection (NNP), a fast dimensionality reduction (DR) method that can imitate any given DR method. Our experiments show that NNP-NET gets good quality results when compared to other state-of-the art GD methods while yielding a better computational scalability.

String Graph Obstacles of High Girth and of Bounded Degree

Abstract
A string graph is the intersection graph of curves in the plane. Kratochvíl previously showed the existence of infinitely many obstacles: graphs that are not string graphs but for which any edge contraction or vertex deletion produces a string graph. Kratochvíl’s obstacles contain arbitrarily large cliques, so they have girth three and unbounded degree. We extend this line of working by studying obstacles among graphs of restricted girth and/or degree. We construct an infinite family of obstacles of girth four; in addition, our construction is K_{2,3}-subgraph-free and near-planar (planar plus one edge). Furthermore, we prove that there is a subcubic obstacle of girth three, and that there are no subcubic obstacles of high girth. We characterize the subcubic string graphs as having a matching whose contraction yields a planar graph, and based on this characterization we find a linear-time algorithm for recognizing subcubic string graphs of bounded treewidth.

Internally-Convex Drawings of Outerplanar Graphs in Small Area

Abstract
A well-known result by Kant [Algorithmica, 1996] implies that n-vertex outerplane graphs admit embedding-preserving planar straight-line grid drawings where the internal faces are convex polygons in O(n²) area. In this paper, we present an algorithm to compute such drawings in O(n¹·⁵) area. We also consider outerplanar drawings in which the internal faces are required to be strictly-convex polygons. In this setting, we consider outerplanar graphs whose weak dual is a path and give a drawing algorithm that achieves Θ(nk²) area, where k is the maximum size of an internal facial cycle.

Visualizing Treewidth

Abstract
A witness drawing of a graph is a visualization that clearly shows a given property of a graph. We study and implement various drawing paradigms for witness drawings to clearly show that graphs have bounded pathwidth or treewidth. Our approach draws the tree decomposition or path decomposition as a tree of bags, with induced subgraphs shown in each bag, and with "tracks" for each graph vertex connecting its copies in multiple bags. Within bags, we optimize the vertex layout to avoid crossings of edges and tracks. We implement a visualization prototype for crossing minimization using dynamic programming for graphs of small width and heuristic approaches for graphs of larger width. We introduce a taxonomy of drawing styles, which render the subgraph for each bag as an arc diagram with one or two pages or as a circular layout with straight-line edges, and we render tracks either with straight lines or with orbital-radial paths.

Separability of Witness Gabriel Drawings

Abstract
A witness Gabriel drawing Γ is a straight-line drawing of a graph in which any two vertices of Γ are adjacent if and only if the disk having these vertices as antipodal points contains no element of a special set of points called witnesses. A witness Gabriel drawing is linearly separable if the vertices and the witnesses lie in opposite half-planes. We prove that every outerplanar graph has a linearly separable witness Gabriel drawing by introducing and studying a new type of drawing that we call a border parabola drawing. We then use border parabola drawings to characterize those triangle-free graphs that admit a linearly separable witness Gabriel drawing. We also consider witness Gabriel drawings where no witness lies in the interior of the convex hull of the vertex set, which we call convexly separable drawings. We construct witness Gabriel drawable graphs for which any witness Gabriel drawing must be convexly separable and that do not admit any linearly separable witness Gabriel drawing.

An Algorithm for Accurate and Simple-Looking Metaphorical Maps

Abstract
Metaphorical maps or contact representations are visual representations of vertex-weighted graphs that rely on the geographic map metaphor. The vertices are represented by countries, the weights by the areas of the countries, and the edges by contacts/boundaries among them. The accuracy with which the weights are mapped to areas and the simplicity of the polygons representing the countries are the two classical optimization goals for metaphorical maps. Mchedlidze & Schnorr [Mchedlidze and Schnorr, 2022] presented a force-based algorithm that creates metaphorical maps that balance between these two optimization goals. Their maps look visually simple, but the accuracy of the maps is far from optimal - the countries' areas can vary up to 30% compared to required. In this paper, we provide a multi-fold extension of the algorithm in [Mchedlidze and Schnorr, 2022]. More specifically: 1) Towards improving accuracy: We introduce the notion of region stiffness and suggest a technique for varying the stiffness based on the current pressure of map regions. 2) Towards maintaining simplicity: We introduce a weight coefficient to the pressure force exerted on each polygon point based on whether the corresponding point appears along a narrow passage. 3) Towards generality: We cover, in contrast to [Mchedlidze and Schnorr, 2022], non-triangulated graphs. This is done by either generating points where more than three regions meet or by introducing holes in the metaphorical map. We perform an extended experimental evaluation that, among other results, reveals that our algorithm is able to construct metaphorical maps with nearly perfect area accuracy with a little sacrifice in their simplicity.

Heuristics for Exact 1-Planarity Testing

Abstract
Since many real-world graphs are nonplanar, the study of graphs that allow few crossings per edge has been an active subfield of graph theory in recent years. One of the most natural generalizations of planar graphs are the so-called 1-planar graphs that admit a drawing with at most one crossing per edge. Unfortunately, testing whether a graph is 1-planar is known to be NP-complete even for very restricted graph classes. On the positive side, Binucci, Didimo and Montecchiani [Binucci et al., 2023] presented the first practical algorithm for testing 1-planarity based on an easy-to-implement backtracking strategy. We build on this idea and systematically explore the design choices of such algorithms and propose several new ingredients, such as different branching strategies and multiple filter criteria that allow us to reject certain branches in the search tree early on. We conduct an extensive experimental evaluation that evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of these ingredients. Given a time limit of three hours per instance, our best configuration is able to solve more than 95% of the non-planar instances from the well-known North and Rome graphs with up to 50 vertices. Notably, the median running time for solved instances is well below 4 seconds.
