Abstract
Streaming graph partitioners enable resource-efficient and massively scalable partitioning, but one-pass assignment heuristics are highly sensitive to stream order and often yield substantially higher edge cuts than in-memory methods. We present BuffCut, a buffered streaming partitioner that narrows this quality gap, particularly when stream ordering is adversarial, by combining prioritized buffering with batch-wise multilevel assignment. BuffCut maintains a bounded priority buffer to delay poorly informed decisions and regulate the order in which nodes are considered for assignment. It incrementally constructs high-locality batches of configurable size by iteratively inserting the highest-priority nodes from the buffer into the batch, effectively recovering locality structure from the stream. Each batch is then assigned via a multilevel partitioning algorithm. Experiments on diverse real-world and synthetic graphs show that BuffCut consistently outperforms state-of-the-art buffered streaming methods. Compared to the strongest prioritized buffering baseline, BuffCut achieves 20.8% fewer edge cuts while running 2.9× faster and using 11.3× less memory. Against the next-best batched method, it reduces edge cut by 15.8% with only modest overheads of 1.8× runtime and 1.09× memory.

QuadRank: Engineering a High Throughput Rank

Authors: Ragnar Groot Koerkamp

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 371, 24th International Symposium on Experimental Algorithms (SEA 2026)

Abstract
Motivation. Given a text, a query rank(q, c) counts the number of occurrences of character c among the first q characters of the text. Space-efficient methods to answer these rank queries form an important building block in many succinct data structures. For example, the FM-index [Ferragina and Manzini, 2000] is a widely used data structure that uses rank queries to locate all occurrences of a pattern in a text. In bioinformatics applications, the goal is usually to process large inputs as fast as possible. Thus, data structures should have high throughput when used with many threads. Contributions. We first survey existing results on rank data structures. For the σ = 2 binary alphabet, we then develop BiRank, which has 3.28% space overhead. BiRank merges the central ideas of two recent papers: (1) we interleave (inline) offsets in each cache line of the underlying bit vector [Laws et al., 2024], reducing cache misses, and (2) these offsets are to the middle of each block so that only half of each needs popcounting [Gottlieb and Reinert, 2025]. In QuadRank (14.4% overhead), we extend these techniques to the σ = 4 (DNA) alphabet. Both data structures typically require only a single cache miss per query, making them highly suitable for high-throughput and memory-bound settings. To enable efficient batch-processing, we support prefetching the cache lines required to answer upcoming queries. Results. BiRank and QuadRank are around 1.5× and 2× faster than similar-overhead methods that do not use interleaving. Prefetching gives an additional 2× speedup, at which point the dual-channel DDR4 RAM bandwidth becomes a hard limit on the total throughput. With prefetching, both methods outperform all other methods apart from SPIDER [Laws et al., 2024] by 2×. When using QuadRank with prefetching in a toy count-only FM-index, QuadFm, this results in a smaller size and up to 4× speedup over Genedex, a state-of-the-art batching FM-index implementation. Conclusion. Optimizing data structures for high throughput, by minimizing cache misses and branch-misses and adding support for prefetching, can result in significant speedups when benchmarks are adjusted accordingly.

Hardness Results on Characteristics for Elastic-Degenerate Strings

Authors: Dominik Köppl and Jannik Olbrich

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 369, 37th Annual Symposium on Combinatorial Pattern Matching (CPM 2026)

Abstract
Generalizations of plain strings have been proposed as a compact way to represent a collection of nearly identical sequences or to express uncertainty at specific text positions by enumerating all possibilities. While a plain string stores a character at each of its positions, generalizations consider a set of characters (indeterminate strings), a set of strings of equal length (generalized degenerate strings, or shortly GD strings), or a set of strings of arbitrary lengths (elastic-degenerate strings, or shortly ED strings). These generalizations are of importance to compactly represent such type of data, and find applications in bioinformatics for representing and maintaining a set of genetic sequences of the same taxonomy or a multiple sequence alignment. To be of use, attention has been drawn to answering various query types such as pattern matching or measuring similarity of ED strings by generalizing techniques known to plain strings. However, for some types of queries, it has been shown that a generalization of a polynomial-time solvable query on classic strings becomes NP-hard on ED strings, e.g. [Russo et al., 2022]. In that light, we wonder about other types of queries that are of particular interest to bioinformatics: unique substrings, absent words, anti-powers, longest previous factors, and Lempel-Ziv-like compression schemes. While we obtain a polynomial time algorithm for a variation of longest previous factors, we show that all other problems are NP-hard to compute, some of them even under the restriction that the input can be modeled as an indeterminate or GD string.

On the Parameterized Complexity of Min-Sum-Radii

Authors: Pankaj Kumar, Haiko Müller, Sebastian Ordyniak, and Melanie Schmidt

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 370, 20th Scandinavian Symposium on Algorithm Theory (SWAT 2026)

Abstract
In the Min-Sum-Radii (MSR) clustering problem, we are given a finite set X of n points in a metric space. The objective is to find at most k clusters centered at a subset of these points such that every point of X is assigned to one of the clusters, minimizing the sum of the radii of the clusters. The problem is known to be NP-hard even on metrics induced by weighted planar graphs and metrics with constant doubling dimension, as shown by Gibson et al. (SWAT 2008). In this work, we investigate the parameterized complexity of MSR on metrics induced by undirected graphs. We distinguish between weighted graph metrics (with positive edge weights) and unweighted graph metrics (where all edges have unit weight). Weighted Graph Metrics. We show that MSR is W[1]-hard on metrics induced by weighted bipartite graphs, when parameterized by the combined parameter k the number of clusters and Δ the cost of the clustering. We then investigate the structural parameterized complexity of the problem. Drexler et al. [doi:10.48550/arXiv.2310.02130] showed that the MSR problem admits an XP algorithm on metrics induced by weighted graphs when parameterized by treewidth, and asked whether this can be improved to fixed-parameter tractability. We first answer their question in the negative, and more strongly show that MSR stays W[1]-hard on metrics induced by undirected weighted bipartite graphs when parameterized by the vertex cover number plus k. We then turn our attention to parameters for dense graphs and show that MSR remains W[1]-hard when parameterized by k+Δ even on cliques and complete bipartite graphs. On the positive side, we employ the known XP algorithm parameterized by treewidth, to show that the MSR problem is FPT when parameterized by the parameter treewidth plus Δ. Together, these results provide a complete picture of the parameterized complexity of MSR with respect to any combination of parameters k, Δ, as well as structural parameters for sparse graphs above vertex cover and known parameters for dense graphs (such as neighborhood diversity and modular width). Unweighted Graph Metrics. The story is rather different for unweighted graphs, since it is a long standing open question whether MSR on metrics induced by undirected graphs is solvable in polynomial-time. Although we cannot answer this question, we provide classical and parameterized hardness results for two very closely related problems, namely Exact-MSR (MSR and one wants to find exactly k clusters) and Allowed-Centers-MSR (MSR with an additional set of allowed cluster centers). We also show that MSR as well as these two problems are fixed-parameter tractable parameterized by the treedepth of the input graph.

FPT Approximations for Capacitated Sum of Radii and Diameters

Authors: Arnold Filtser and Ameet Gadekar

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 367, 42nd International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2026)

Abstract
The Capacitated Sum of Radii problem involves partitioning a set of points P, where each point p ∈ P has capacity U_p, into k clusters that minimize the sum of cluster radii, such that the number of points in the cluster centered at point p is at most U_p. We begin by showing that the problem is APX-hard, and that under gap-ETH there is no parameterized approximation scheme (FPT-AS). We then construct a ≈5.83-approximation algorithm in FPT time (improving a previous ≈7.61 approximation in FPT time). Our results also hold when the objective is a general monotone symmetric norm of radii. We also improve the approximation factors for the uniform capacity case, and for the closely related problem of Capacitated Sum of Diameters.

Broadcast in Almost Mixing Time

Authors: Anton Paramonov and Roger Wattenhofer

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 364, 43rd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2026)

Abstract
We study the problem of broadcasting multiple messages in the CONGEST model. In this problem, a dedicated source node s possesses a set M of messages with every message of size O(log n) where n is the total number of nodes. The objective is to ensure that every node in the network learns all messages in M. The execution of an algorithm progresses in rounds, and we focus on optimizing the round complexity of broadcasting multiple messages. Our primary contribution is a randomized algorithm for networks with expander topology. The algorithm succeeds with high probability and achieves a round complexity that is optimal up to a factor of the network’s mixing time and polylogarithmic terms. It leverages a multi-COBRA primitive, which uses multiple branching random walks running in parallel. A crucial aspect of our method is the use of these branching random walks to construct an optimal (up to a polylogarithmic factor) tree packing of a random graph, which is then used for efficient broadcasting. We also prove the problem to be NP-hard in a centralized setting and provide insights into why lower bounds that can be matched in expanders, namely graph diameter and |M|/minCut, cannot be tight in general graphs.

A Polylogarithmic Competitive Algorithm for Stochastic Online Sorting and TSP

Authors: Andreas Kalavas, Charalampos Platanos, and Thanos Tolias

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 364, 43rd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2026)

Abstract
In Online Sorting, an array of n initially empty cells is given. At each time step t, an element x_t ∈ [0,1] arrives and must be irrevocably placed in an empty cell without knowledge of future arrivals. We aim to minimize the sum of absolute differences between pairs of elements placed in consecutive array cells, seeking an online placement strategy that results in a final array close to a sorted one. An interesting multidimensional generalization, referred to as the Online Traveling Salesperson Problem, arises when the request sequence consists of points in the d-dimensional unit cube and the objective is to minimize the sum of Euclidean distances between points in consecutive cells. Motivated by the recent work of (Abrahamsen, Bercea, Beretta, Klausen and Kozma; ESA 2024), we consider the stochastic version of Online Sorting (resp. Online TSP), where each element (resp. point) x_t is an i.i.d. sample from the uniform distribution on [0, 1] (resp. [0,1]^d). By carefully decomposing the request sequence into a hierarchy of balls-into-bins instances, where the balls to bins ratio is large enough so that bin occupancy is sharply concentrated around its mean and small enough so that we can efficiently deal with the elements placed in the same bin, we obtain an online algorithm that approximates the optimal cost within a factor of O(log² n) with high probability. Our result comprises an exponential improvement over the previously best known competitive ratio of Õ(n^{1/4}) for Stochastic Online Sorting due to (Abrahamsen et al.; ESA 2024) and O(√n) for (adversarial) Online TSP due to (Bertram, ESA 2025).

Protrusion Decompositions Revisited: Uniform Lossy Kernels for Reducing Treewidth and Linear Kernels for Hitting Disconnected Minors

Authors: Roohani Sharma and Michał Włodarczyk

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 364, 43rd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2026)

Abstract
Let ℱ be a finite family of graphs. In the ℱ-Deletion problem, one is given a graph G and an integer k, and the goal is to find k vertices whose deletion results in a graph with no minor from the family ℱ. This may be regarded as a far-reaching generalization of Vertex Cover and Feedback vertex Set. In their seminal work, Fomin, Lokshtanov, Misra & Saurabh [FOCS 2012] gave a polynomial kernel for this problem when the family ℱ contains a planar graph. As the size of their kernel is g(ℱ) ⋅ k^{f(ℱ)}, a natural follow-up question was whether the dependence on ℱ in the exponent of k can be avoided. The answer turned out to be negative: Giannopoulou, Jansen, Lokshtanov & Saurabh [TALG 2017] proved that this is already inevitable for the special case of the Treewidth-η-Deletion problem. In this work, we show that this non-uniformity can be avoided at the expense of a small loss. First, we present a simple 2-approximate kernelization algorithm for Treewidth-η-Deletion with a kernel size g(η) ⋅ k⁶. Next, we show that the approximation factor can be made arbitrarily close to 1, if we settle for a kernelization protocol with 𝒪(1) calls to an oracle that solves instances of size bounded by a uniform polynomial in k. We extend the above results to general ℱ-Deletion, whenever ℱ contains a planar graph, as long as an oracle for Treewidth-η-Deletion is available for small instances. Notably, all our constants are computable functions of ℱ and our techniques work also when some graphs in ℱ may be disconnected. Our results rely on two novel techniques. First, we transform so-called "near-protrusion decompositions" into true protrusion decompositions by sacrificing a small accuracy loss. Secondly, we show how to optimally compress such a decomposition with respect to general ℱ-Deletion. Using our second technique, we also obtain linear kernels on sparse graph classes when ℱ contains a planar graph, whereas the previously known theorems required all graphs in ℱ to be connected. Specifically, we generalize the kernelization algorithm by Kim, Langer, Paul, Reidl, Rossmanith, Sau & Sikdar [TALG 2015] on graph classes that exclude a topological minor.

A General Framework for Low Soundness Homomorphism Testing

Authors: Tushant Mittal and Sourya Roy

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 362, 17th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2026)

Abstract
We introduce a general framework to design and analyze algorithms for the problem of testing homomorphisms between finite groups in the low-soundness regime. In this regime, we give the first constant-query tests for various families of groups. These include tests for: (i) homomorphisms between arbitrary cyclic groups, (ii) homomorphisms between any finite group and ℤ_p, (iii) automorphisms of dihedral and symmetric groups, (iv) inner automorphisms of non-abelian finite simple groups and extraspecial groups, and (v) testing linear characters of GL_n(F_q), and finite-dimensional Lie algebras over F_q. We also recover the result of Kiwi [TCS'03] for testing homomorphisms between F_qⁿ and F_q. Prior to this work, such tests were only known for abelian groups with a constant maximal order (such as F_qⁿ). No tests were known for non-abelian groups. As an additional corollary, our framework gives combinatorial list decoding bounds for cyclic groups with list size dependence of O(ε^{-2}) (for agreement parameter ε). This improves upon the currently best-known bound of O(ε^{-105}) due to Dinur, Grigorescu, Kopparty, and Sudan [STOC'08], and Guo and Sudan [RANDOM'14].

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 362, 17th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2026)

Abstract
We prove algorithmic versions of the polynomial Freiman-Ruzsa theorem of Gowers, Green, Manners, and Tao (Annals of Mathematics, 2025) in additive combinatorics. In particular, we give classical and quantum polynomial-time algorithms that, for A ⊆ 𝔽₂ⁿ with doubling constant K, learn an explicit description of a subspace V ⊆ 𝔽₂ⁿ of size |V| ≤ |A| such that A can be covered by K^C translates of V, for a universal constant C > 1.

Mining Inter-Document Argument Structures in Scientific Papers for an Argument Web

Authors: Florian Ruosch, Cristina Sarasua, and Abraham Bernstein

Published in: TGDK, Volume 3, Issue 3 (2025). Transactions on Graph Data and Knowledge, Volume 3, Issue 3

Abstract
In Argument Mining, predicting argumentative relations between texts (or spans) remains one of the most challenging aspects, even more so in the cross-document setting. This paper makes three key contributions to advance research in this domain. We first extend an existing dataset, the Sci-Arg corpus, by annotating it with explicit inter-document argumentative relations, thereby allowing arguments to be distributed over several documents forming an Argument Web; these new annotations are published using Semantic Web technologies (RDF, OWL). Second, we explore and evaluate three automated approaches for predicting these inter-document argumentative relations, establishing critical baselines on the new dataset. We find that a simple classifier based on discourse indicators with access to context outperforms neural methods. Third, we conduct a comparative analysis of these approaches for both intra- and inter-document settings, identifying statistically significant differences in results that indicate the necessity of distinguishing between these two scenarios. Our findings highlight significant challenges in this complex domain and open crucial avenues for future research on the Argument Web of Science, particularly for those interested in leveraging Semantic Web technologies and knowledge graphs to understand scholarly discourse. With this, we provide the first stepping stones in the form of a benchmark dataset, three baseline methods, and an initial analysis for a systematic exploration of this field relevant to the Web of Data and Science.

PIPQ: Strict Insert-Optimized Concurrent Priority Queue

Authors: Olivia Grimes, Ahmed Hassan, Panagiota Fatourou, and Roberto Palmieri

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 356, 39th International Symposium on Distributed Computing (DISC 2025)

Abstract
This paper presents PIPQ, a strict and linearizable concurrent priority queue whose design differs from existing solutions in literature because it focuses on enabling parallelism of insert operations as opposed to accelerating delete-min operations, as traditionally done. In a nutshell, PIPQ’s structure includes two levels: the worker level and the leader level. The worker level provides per-thread data structures enabling fast and parallel insertions. The leader level contains the highest priority elements in the priority queue and can thus serve delete-min operations. Our evaluation, which includes an exploration of different data access patterns, operation mixes, runtime settings, and an integration into a graph-based application, shows that PIPQ outperforms competitors in a variety of cases, especially with insert-dominant workloads.

Multi-Criteria Route Planning with Little Regret

Authors: Carina Truschel and Sabine Storandt

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 137, 25th Symposium on Algorithmic Approaches for Transportation Modelling, Optimization, and Systems (ATMOS 2025)

Abstract
Multi-criteria route planning arises naturally in real-world navigation scenarios where users care about more than just one objective - such as minimizing travel time while also avoiding steep inclines or unpaved surfaces or toll routes. To capture the possible trade-offs between competing criteria, many algorithms compute the set of Pareto-optimal paths, which are paths that are not dominated by others with respect to the considered cost vectors. However, the number of Pareto-optimal paths can grow exponentially with the size of the input graph. This leads to significant computational overhead and results in large output sets that overwhelm users with too many alternatives. In this work, we present a technique based on the notion of regret minimization that efficiently filters the Pareto set during or after the search to a subset of specified size. Regret minimizing algorithms identify such a representative solution subset by considering how any possible user values any subset with respect to the objectives. We prove that regret-based filtering provides us with quality guarantees for the two main query types that are considered in the context of multi-criteria route planning, namely constrained shortest path queries and personalized path queries. Furthermore, we design a novel regret minimization algorithm that works for any number of criteria, is easy to implement and produces solutions with much smaller regret value than the most commonly used baseline algorithm. We carefully describe how to incorporate our regret minimization algorithm into existing route planning techniques to drastically reduce their running times and space consumption, while still returning paths that are close-to-optimal.

Linear-Time Multilevel Graph Partitioning via Edge Sparsification

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
The current landscape of balanced graph partitioning is divided into high-quality but expensive multilevel algorithms and cheaper approaches with linear running time, such as single-level algorithms and streaming algorithms. We demonstrate how to achieve the best of both worlds with a linear time multilevel algorithm. Multilevel algorithms construct a hierarchy of increasingly smaller graphs by repeatedly contracting clusters of nodes. Our approach preserves their distinct advantage, allowing refinement of the partition over multiple levels with increasing detail. At the same time, we use edge sparsification to guarantee geometric size reduction between the levels and thus linear running time. We provide a proof of the linear running time as well as additional insights into the behavior of multilevel algorithms, showing that graphs with low modularity are most likely to trigger worst-case running time. We evaluate multiple approaches for edge sparsification and integrate our algorithm into the state-of-the-art multilevel partitioner KaMinPar, maintaining its excellent parallel scalability. As demonstrated in detailed experiments, this results in a 1.49× average speedup (up to 4× for some instances) with only 1% loss in solution quality. Moreover, our algorithm clearly outperforms state-of-the-art single-level and streaming approaches.

Semi-Streaming Algorithms for Hypergraph Matching

Authors: Henrik Reinstädtler, S M Ferdous, Alex Pothen, Bora Uçar, and Christian Schulz

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
We propose two one-pass streaming algorithms for the NP-hard hypergraph matching problem. The first algorithm stores a small subset of potential matching edges in a stack using dual variables to select edges. It has an approximation guarantee of 1/(d(1+ε)) and requires 𝒪((n/ε)log²n) bits of memory, where n is the number of vertices in the hypergraph, d is the maximum number of vertices in a hyperedge, and ε > 0 is a parameter to be chosen. The second algorithm computes, stores, and updates a single matching as the edges stream, with an approximation ratio dependent on a parameter α. Its best approximation guarantee is 1/((2d-1) + 2 √{d(d-1)}), and it requires only 𝒪(n) memory. We have implemented both algorithms and compared them with respect to solution quality, memory consumption, and running times on two diverse sets of hypergraphs with a non-streaming greedy and a naive streaming algorithm. Our results show that the streaming algorithms achieve much better solution quality than naive algorithms when facing adverse orderings. Furthermore, these algorithms reduce the memory required by a factor of 13 in the geometric mean on our test problems, and also outperform the offline Greedy algorithm in running time.
